In recent years, the recycling industry has taken a big hit.John Griffith with GFL Environmental in Denver, Colorado says the cost to recycle has gone up, and there’s more pressure to make sure what’s being recycled isn’t contaminated with trash.“We process probably 30 tons an hour,” Griffith said.Considering how much material the recycling facility takes in per day, low-cost efficiency is key, and technology has become its saving grace.“We’re using robotics and artificial intelligence to help deal with some of the primary challenges within the recycling facility,” AMP Robotics CEO Matanya Horowitz said.Created by AMP Robotics founder Matanya Horowitz, AMP Cortex is a high-speed robotics system guided by artificial intelligence.Here’s how it works: the brains and the eyes of the robot are at the top. So as one robot learns in a different part of the country or a different region, it also educates all the other robots so they’re constantly getting smarter,” Griffith said.However, the robot doesn’t work alone.“You could say these are the co-workers of our robot,” Griffith said as he passed human workers.Humans are still needed in the recycling process, but the robot has been able to take on sorting challenges that would otherwise be unsafe for people.“For obvious reasons, they don’t really mind getting stuck with hypodermic needles, or sifting through all the nasty stuff that ends up in the recycling like diapers, and so we can help move the manual sorter further away from these hazards,” Horowitz said.The robot at GFL Environmental is focusing its efforts on picking out items like milk jugs, coffee cups and margarine tubs. The materials were formerly considered trash, but now they can be put to valuable use and sold somewhere as another recyclable.“Our goal is to maximize the breadth of the recycling program, and by doing so, divert as much waste from the landfills into valuable purposes as possible,” Griffith said.Thanks to the robots, GFL Environmental is one of the first in the nation to recycle coffee cups. As more robots continue to deploy across the country, it’s clear artificial intelligence is helping to transform the recycling industry. Matanya says they’re efficient workers, but they’re also providing more transparency and data in the industry that has been historically difficult to obtain until now.“There hasn’t really been a sensor, or any means of automatically detecting how well things are working, where things are breaking down, where materials are ending up in the wrong spot. And now, this homegrown produce is being impacted by international politics.“The second we heard about these tariffs, we were elated,” says Ken Christopher of Christopher Ranch, Gilroy’s top garlic producer. Christopher is talking about new tariffs recently passed down by the Trump administration. These tariffs are increasing taxes on all kinds of imported goods, including garlic, which Christopher says gives them a level playing field after years of competing against what he claims are illegal import practices.“American garlic farmers, we're not afraid of competition,” Christopher says. “We're more than happy to compete with other countries like Mexico, Spain, and Argentina, because they play by the rules. It's when non-market actors like China try to compete and distort the rules that when we get upset.”Christopher Ranch is the Gilroy's largest employer and its last garlic farm.Christopher tells us that before 1993, almost all garlic consumed in America was grown in America. He says, however, that all changed when Chinese importers started illegally flooding the market with tens of millions of pounds of garlic. “When that happened, there used to be 12 garlic farmers in America; now there's only three,” Christopher says. “It’s tariffs like these that protect the final garlic farms here.”These tariffs also appear to protect the price of garlic. Before these tariffs went into effect, a box of California grown garlic was trading at a box at most, while imported Chinese garlic was selling for a box. After these new tariffs went into effect, the price of Chinese garlic has increased to more than a box.“When you're talking about a 25 percent on all inbound Chinese garlic, that means there's going to be a demand for California grown garlic,” Christopher says. “That's going to mean more production, more jobs, higher wages, investment in infrastructure, and a real economic shift in our community.”With harvest just a few weeks away, American garlic farmers says these tariffs couldn't have come at a better time. 2235

KENSINGTON, N.H. – A father in New Hampshire killed a coyote with his bare hands after it attacked his young child on a trail Monday, according to the Kensington Police Department. Before that attack, police say they received a report of the coyote attacking a vehicle on Drinkwater Road in Hampton Falls at about 8:40 a.m. Shortly after, police say a 62-year-old woman on Hemlock Road reported that she and her dogs were attacked by a coyote.“The coyote was on her three-season porch and her two dogs had opened the sliding door and were attacked by the coyote,” wrote the department. “The two dogs retreated back into the house and the coyote attempted to get into the house. While the homeowner was fighting to keep the coyote out of the house, she was bitten.”The homeowner was treated at an area hospital and received the first series of rabies shots. She will return later in the week for a second set of shots. Her dogs were also treated. Then at about 11 a.m., police say that same coyote attacked a family walking on a trail in Exeter. In the wake of the death of an eight-year-old boy while in custody of Customs and Border Protection, the agency announced a series of policy changes on Tuesday night.First, Border Patrol is conducting secondary medical checks on all children in CBP care and custody with a particular focus on children under 10.Second, Border Patrol is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement on available surge options for transportation to Family Residential Centers and supervised release, CBP said. The agency also is reviewing other custody options to relieve capacity issues in the El Paso sector, such as working with nongovernmental organizations or local partners for temporary housing.Third, CBP is considering options for medical assistance with other governmental partners, the agency said. That could include support from the Coast Guard, as well as possibly more aid from the Department of Defense, FEMA, Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Finally, CBP is reviewing its policies with a particular focus on the care and custody of children under 10, both at intake and beyond 24 hours in custody, the agency said.On Tuesday, Rep.
