(KGTV) -- A Chula Vista woman's holiday decorations vanished from her lawn Thursday morning — but she's determined not to let "the Grinch" steal her Christmas spirit.It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wendy Claproth's home in East Chula Vista. Since her husband's passing ten years ago, Claproth says she did not have the spirit to spread Christmas cheer outside. But this year, she finally got the courage to give it a shot.On her front lawn, she put up a large blowup Christmas tree snowman, hung lights along the roof, set up candy canes, wrapped her mailbox, and even created a Christmas tree with a set of lights. Her house screamed "festive." But on Thursday morning, she noticed that her brand new Christmas tree snowman inflatable was gone."Yes, you get mad, but more than anything, you get disappointed," Claproth said.It wasn't the wind, and it definitely was not an accident. Thieves had ripped the blowup right from her lawn, leaving only the stakes."It was kind of angled towards the corner all by itself over there, so I guess it was an easy prey," Claproth sighed.She wrote about the incident in her neighborhood app and found that she was not the only victim. Many others chimed in, saying the Grinch stole their Christmas decorations as well.Chula Vista Police says while there are not too many official reports of stolen decorations, these thefts, unfortunately, are common during the holiday season. But Claproth is not letting the thieves take away her holiday spirit."I ordered myself another one because they are not going to steal my Christmas cheer!" Claproth said. She plans to place it right where it was earlier in the week.She even has a message for the naughty thieves."I hope that you really needed it," Claproth said. "And if you needed it, then I guess it's OK. (KGTV) -Students and parents in the South Bay are demanding the Sweetwater Union High School District bring back their buses.In a cost-cutting move, the district announced last May that it would eliminate dozens of bus routes throughout the district. Four of the district's high schools were impacted. Eastlake and Olympian High Schools each lost four routes, Otay Ranch lost one, but San Ysidro High School took the biggest hit; with twenty out of twenty-two routes cut.Olga Espinoza attended Monday night's school board. She said her son has to walk more than three miles each way to get to school. She said it's simply not safe."Since we are on the border, I feel like he could get kidnapped. It's a really dark road, there's no benches, no water, there's coyotes out there, tarantulas, bugs, it's not a nice road for children to be walking, " Espinoza said. A couple dozen parents and students marched into the meeting holding cardboard school buses. They chanted, "Cut from the top, not our buses!" Many of them were with The San Ysidro Students United and Madres Unidas. A district spokesman said school leaders are trying to address their concerns. "We are not in terms of putting back any routes because the policy does stand in terms of our 3 and a half mile polic, but we are looking at potentially adding a couple of routes that will support some of the routes that currently exist, part of the issue is drivers, we don't have the drivers," said Communications Director Manny Rubio. Rubio estimated roughly seven-hundred students use buses, and that included kids who live right down the street from their school. He also said enrollment and attendance are up this year at San Ysidro High School. Parents paid 0 for a bus pass, but Rubio said the cost to the district was closer to ,000 a student."We're one of the few districts who still offers home to school transportation, even San Ysidro Elementary, which is right down the street, does not offer home to school transportation," said Rubio.Routes for special education students are not impacted.The district also said it would not have made the cuts without the completion of Old Otay Mesa Road which was finished in May. 2223

(KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is investigating a series of suspicious fires over the weekend.According to the department, the activity began on September 17, when a series of fires broke out in East Chula Vista. Crews were called to the fires beginning at 3:30 a.m.The department says four separate fires sparked within a 30-minute window on Lake Crest Drive, Eastlake Parkway, Telegraph Canyon Road, and East J Street.RELATED: Fire scorches Chula Vista playground overnightOn September 19, a fire erupted at a Veterans Park playground. Video from the scene showed the raging blaze and an explosion at the playground. Fire officials are investigating the fire at the Veterans Park Community Center as suspicious.Police are also investigating a fire that started on September 20 on the 1300 block of Martin Place. According to fire officials, residents in the home woke up to find their backyard fence on fire.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said.She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi.See the map below for locations on all the blazes: 1690

(KGTV) - A Chula Vista homeowner's association (HOA) is dealing with claims of embezzlement, corrupted financial records and a police investigation.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner tracked down the former HOA manager who's at the center of the accusations, who says he did nothing wrong. However, the HOA claims that he was writing thousands of dollars in reimbursement checks every month to himself for alleged maintenance, but didn't provide basic documentation like store invoices or receipts.Unlike the idyllic, legendary city of Camelot, the local Camelot at Eastlake Shores is in turmoil. "It's not the wonderful place that it used to be," says homeowner Connie Patrick. She and other homeowners at the Chula Vista HOA are grappling with the news.Homeowner Griselda Palma tells us, "I was very startled when I read the letter…it was very disturbing."10News has a copy of a letter that was sent out to more than 400 homeowners by the HOA's Board of Directors this past spring. The letter accuses the former manager, Howard Gatbonton, of possible financial abuse. Gatbonton was directly employed by the HOA, which also contracted with an outside management company called Summit Property Management. Summit's main office is located overlooking Mission Valley. In the letter, the HOA wrote that a “Review of the Association's finances uncovered many discrepancies." The HOA letter also adds, "as of the date of this letter, no records have been provided or discovered that detail or explain over 0,000.00 of reimbursement expenses to Gatbonton."A police investigation is underway. In an interview with 10News, Gatbonton denied any wrongdoing. Gatbonton says he was forced to pay for maintenance expenses using his own money because the HOA Board wouldn't give him a credit card. He told 10News he spent about 0,000. This station asked if the money was from his own pocket. "Yes, ma'am," he told 10News. 10News asked Gatbonton if he would write reimbursement checks to himself."Yes, ma'am," he says. When this station asked if the board was aware he was doing that, he replied: "Yes, ma'am, because I was the manager to give them a copy of every single check that I [wrote]."After the investigation into the HOA's financial records and reimbursements to Gatbonton began, he stepped down, claiming he no longer wanted to deal with the Board.Summit Property Management was terminated.To make matters more complicated, according to the Board, it was discovered that, "all of the Association's electronic records stored in the Association's onsite computer had been deleted and the computer's hard drive corrupted."According to the letter, the records are "unsalvageable."We ask Gatbonton, "[Did you] destroy or corrupt any files?" He replies, "It's impossible to corrupt because it's in the cloud! How can I corrupt [them]? Even the emails are in the cloud! How can I corrupt that?"Gatbonton says that discrepancies with the HOA's financial records existed long before he hired, and when he alerted the Board, they dismissed the problems. "They turned a blind eye," Gatbonton says.Gatbonton told us he's got the records to vindicate himself, but he wouldn't share them. "I've been advised not to," he told us.The HOA declined an interview with 10News, but the law firm representing the HOA sent a statement claiming, in part, "Since quitting, Gatbonton has waged war against the Association, spreading false information…"The firm reports that "Gatbonton provided only copies of some of the checks he had written to himself as 'proof' of the validity of the expenditures. The Association had accounts at Home Depot, Office Max and other companies for supplies. It is not clear why Gatbonton did not use these accounts for maintenance supplies or why he did not simply write checks to these companies for the alleged supplies."According to the firm, "Over the months following his resignation more evidence of gross mismanagement and financial abuse by Gatbonton was discovered. The Association's pool and two children's playgrounds had to be closed for critical failure of safety inspections despite the 0,000.00+ that Gatbonton reimbursed himself for alleged maintenance."The firm writes, "When pushed for missing documents, Gatbonton claimed he had already turned over all existing records" and made no mention of nor provided any access to any alleged 'cloud' based documentation."Summit Property Management's Jennifer Rimer tells 10News that Summit was only in-charge of the Board's meeting minutes. It was never responsible for finances for the HOA and its members.
