Hurricane Lane's outer bands have been pummeling Hawaii's Big Island with rain Thursday, triggering landslides and threatening serious flooding as the Category 4 cyclone moves perilously close to the Aloha State. The center of the storm — which could become the first major cyclone to make landfall in the state in 26 years — is expected to move very close to the main islands or cross land Thursday through Friday, forecasters said.It could be so devastating that authorities are urging residents to set aside two weeks' worth of food and water."Be prepared to shelter in place with 14 days of food supplies and water and any other necessities," Hawaii Gov. David Ige said at a news conference Wednesday.Track the stormThe storm's center, with maximum sustained winds near 130 mph, was in the Pacific about 210 miles south-southwest of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona around 5 a.m. HT Thursday (11 a.m. ET).Landslides are a concern, with 10-30 inches of rain forecast through the weekend -- and slides already were happening on the Big Island as the storm's outer bands hit Thursday morning. On the Big Island's northern tip, landslides were blocking parts of Route 19, the county civil defense agency said.About 7 to 12 inches of rain already had fallen on parts of the Big Island by early Thursday, the National Weather Service office in Honolulu said.Buses around Honolulu have been picking up residents in need and taking them to shelters. All public schools canceled classes until further notice, and many state employees have been asked to stay home.Tropical storm force winds (39-73 mph) stretch out to 140 miles, so even if the hurricane doesn't make landfall, it could have widespread impact. Lane threatens to bring dangerous winds, landslides, rough surf and major flooding. All of the islands are under weather alerts.A hurricane warning is in effect for the Big Island as well as Maui County and Oahu -- meaning hurricane conditions are expected there. Kauai and Niihau are under a hurricane watch, meaning hurricane conditions are possible and that winds of at least 39 mph are anticipated in the comings days. 2133

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-19 death of a beloved Imperial Beach grandmother."I have no words. So hard," said a tearful Angelica Madrigal, the daughter of Juana Barajas.Barajas, 61, first became sick last week. By the next day, a fever had arrived."Chest congested and shortness of breath," said Madrigal. "She called me and said, 'I can’t breathe well.'"An ambulance rushed Barajas to the hospital. She tested positive for COVID-19 and that night, she was placed on a ventilator.Barajas, who lived with diabetes and a heart condition, suffered four heart attacks in the ICU. On Saturday, just five days after she first became ill, Barajas, a mother of three and grandmother of three, passed away."I couldn’t touch her. I couldn’t say goodbye. Had to see her through a window," said Madrigal.Madrigal says her mother was hard-working, humble, and loved to joke around."Since I was kids, she always had two or three jobs," said Madrigal. "She was my best friend. She was everything to me."Madrigal isn’t sure how her mom contracted the virus, but says her health issues meant she did have many doctor's appointments.Madrigal says her mother otherwise stuck close to home and wore a mask.In the days after her mother's death, she and several other members of her family have come down with symptoms, including a fever and a cough. They spent Friday morning waiting in line to receive a COVID-19 test."This is serious, this is not a joke. People need to take this seriously. If it happened to me, it can happen to you," said Madrigal.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1646

In 2135, NASA says an asteroid the size of the Empire State Building could slam into Earth.According to the Washington Post, scientists say, though the chance is small, the asteroid could slam into Earth on September 22, 2135, destroying lots of living things on the planet. The odds of the asteroid, named Bennu, actually hitting Earth are one in 2,700. If the asteroid does get too close for comfort, the geniuses at NASA have hatched a plan.NASA says they could send a nine-ton “bulk impactor” to push the asteroid out of Earth’s orbit. The plan is called HAMMER, which stands for (deep breath) Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response.Though the odds are slim that the massive asteroid will hit Earth, in 1908, what is believed to be an asteroid crashed in Siberia with force 185 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The impact flattened 80 million trees and killed hundreds of reindeer. Scientists say Bennu isn’t all bad.The asteroid is giving scientists a chance to test theories. NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex will also map Bennu and figure out what the asteroid is made of.To learn more about Bennu, click here. 1153

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. –  A former United States border patrol agent says he nearly lost his arm in 2010 after training in Silver Strand Waters in southern California.Joshua Willey says he contracted flesh-eating bacteria.“I just remember my arm was extremely swollen like I wanna say the size of a volleyball maybe, “ Willey said. “My family and I were told that I might have to have my arm amputated and that was hard to hear.”Willey joined the group, “Citizens against Sewage” Friday afternoon to demand action against the ongoing problem.President Trump is scheduled to visit San Diego next week to look at the border wall prototypes, and the group wants him to take a tour of the Tijuana River Valley and view the extensive sewage issues."Citizens against Sewage" also called for the commissioner of the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) to resign or be reassigned for what they claim is a lack of action on the matter:IBWC sent the following statement to Scripps station KGTV in San Diego:"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Agent and his family. We have successfully pressed Mexico into taking emergency actions and that as a result fugitive illicit discharges are being intercepted.Mexico has told us and we are verifying that they are indeed taking steps to stop sewage from crossing the border. Commissioner Drusina will work until otherwise notified by the Administration." 1452

In a memo sent to all 32 NFL teams, the league said teams won't isolate players in a local bubble during the postseason.According to the memo, which was obtained by the Associated Press and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, teams will only be allowed to require staff and players to stay at the team hotel the night before their game.Pelissero added that league officials and medical experts recommended the decision to forego local bubbles with the NFL Players Association, which was based on COVID-19 testing data. 519
