Among those new laws are increases to California's gas tax, new regulations on ammunition sales and a law requiring doctors to tell patients if placed on probation. See the list below for more: Senate Bill 1448 - Patient’s Right to Know ActStarting July 1, doctors will be required to notify patients if placed on probation for serious professional misconduct involving harm to patients. Prop 63. - Ammunition salesStarting July 1, new rules for purchasing bullets will go into effect. The new rules require background checks every time someone wants to purchase ammunition. The law is part of Proposition 63, which voters approved in 2016. A fee is also required for each transaction. Gas tax increaseBeginning July 1, 2019, California’s gas tax is set to rise again by nearly 6 cents per gallon. (AP) — California’s attorney general has dropped a lawsuit seeking the names and contact information of every person who used one of the state Republican Party’s unofficial ballot drop boxes. The party used the boxes to collect ballots in some counties with closely contested U.S. House races. It’s legal in California to collect completed ballots and turn them in on behalf of voters. But state law says only county election officials are allowed to deploy ballot drop boxes. Friday, the attorney general’s office announced it was able to ensure that voters’ ballots were counted. SACRAMENTO  (KGTV) – Sexually transmitted diseases hit a record high in California in 2017, according to the California Department of Public Health.More than 300,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis were reported last year. The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. SACO, Maine – A man in Maine has been arrested after authorities say he was caught putting razor blades into pizza dough that was then sold to customers.The Saco Police Department says it was notified of the tampered food by the city’s Hannaford Supermarket last Tuesday. Officers say a customer had purchased a Portland Pie pizza dough and later discovered razor blades inside.“The review of store security surveillance footage revealed a person tampered with the packaging of several Portland Pie pizza doughs,” wrote the department in a statement.Police have identified the suspect as 38-year-old Nicholas Mitchell and said he’s a former associate of It’ll Be Pizza company, which manufactures products for Portland Pie.A warrant was issued for Mitchell’s arrest and he was later taken into custody in Dover, New Hampshire, according to police.As a result of the incident, Hannaford Supermarkets has issued a recall for all Portland Pie branded products sold at its stores.The supermarket chain says customers who purchased Portland Pie pizza dough or cheese sold in its delis between Aug. 1 and Oct. 11 should not consume the products. They may return it to the store for a full refund.Additionally, the chain says it has removed all Portland Pie products from its shelves and paused replenishment of the products indefinitely, “after what is believed to be further malicious tampering incidents involving metal objects inserted into Portland Pie products.”Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the tampering. It is a multimillion-dollar attempt to shield app-based drivers in the state from a labor law, known as AB5, that makes companies give more benefits and wage protections to their workers. California approved the labor law last year, the strictest in the country on when employers can classify workers as independent contractors.
