SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For 250,000 low-income children in San Diego County, a healthy breakfast and lunch are provided by their schools. In most cases, that stops during the summer, and now more than ever, that's a problem."For all too many San Diego children, summertime brings about hunger," says Vince Hall. Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, and this is where his organization steps in partnering with the state's Pandemic EBT program. This summer, each eligible child receives a one-time payment of 5 for groceries from the State of California. And for a school like Lexington Elementary in El Cajon, this program is a necessity. "98% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged," says Lesley Ezop. Ezop is the interim principal at Lexington Elementary. It's one of 11 food distribution points that Feeding San Diego partners with to offer children much needed nutrition throughout the summer."Just so that kids can have the basics so that they can learn and can function," adds Ezop. "When kids have what they need, they're going to succeed, right?" But the program doesn't stop there. The children aren't the only ones facing hunger. Feeding San Diego knows if the student needs food assistance, then the entire family needs it. So the organization partners with local schools to provide meals for the whole family. "If we provide food to youth and not to the adults, that food is just going to be divided, and the effect of our initiative is going to be diminished," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. The City of CV & SD have cancelled permits for fireworks displays for this Friday’s Homecoming games. We are aware fireworks are a time-tradition, however due to concerns of severe dry weather, we have been advised against them,” the district said in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the entire month of October, all kids 11-years-old or younger can visit the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park for free.The zoo is offering free entry from Oct. 1 to 31, adding that surprise activities will also be scheduled through the weekends. The offer is valid for one paying adult and up to 5 children (ages 11 and younger).Both zoos will require that all visitors continue wearing facial coverings and cooperate with regulations around the coronavirus pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From California to Maine, breweries across the country are stepping up to help California fire victims.The effort started with the Sierra Nevada brewery. While their facility was spared by the Camp Fire, communities around it were devastated.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman reached out to fellow brewers to join him in the disaster relief effort, making their ‘Resilience Butte County Proud IPA’ recipe available to those who want to help. The brewery is asking that 100 percent of profits go to fire relief efforts. So far over 1,200 breweries have pledged to make and sell the beer.“I’ve never seen anything on this scale,” said Jim Millea, brewmaster at OB Brewery. “That’s a lot of beer being made for a good cause, it’s pretty sweet!”Millea says he didn’t hesitate to join the effort.“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a good cause?” said Millea. He’s one of many in the San Diego region who will be brewing Resilience IPA. Millea hopes to have his on tap at the OB Brewery in a few weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials say 18 more people have died from flu-related illness in San Diego in the last week.San Diego's flu-death total for the season is now at 269 people. Officials said this season the deaths have ranged in people 1- to 101-years-old. Thirty-four of those deaths have been in individuals under the age of 65.At the same time last season, there were only 49 recorded flu-related deaths.RELATED: Here's when doctors say you should go to the hospital with the flu"Influenza deaths are very unfortunate, but they occur in higher numbers during a severe flu season," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said.
