SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman's newly announced candidacy will alter the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Sherman, termed out from City Council, is the first household Republican to run to lead America's eighth largest city. Sherman announced he would run just before the Dec. 6 deadline to file for the March 2020 primary. Current Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, is termed out. In an interview, Sherman said he did not want the mayoral debates to be dominated by two big-name Democrats: State Assemblyman Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro-Tem Barbara Bry. Sherman says he'll run on a platform of reducing regulations to bring lower cost market-rate housing. He also wants to increase enforcement of crimes by the homeless, compelling them to seek help. Finally, he says he wants to reduce what he calls union control at City Hall. "Listening to the two major candidates there, I'm going, 'Well, things that I care about aren't being discussed so let's see what I can do,'" he said. The Mayor is officially a nonpartisan job, but Sherman is facing an uphill battle as a Republican. The Registrar of Voters reports as of Dec. 2, there were 324,883 Democrats to 162,979 Republicans. There were 238,221 decline to state voters. "You have to assume that Scott Sherman will get the majority, if not the vast majority of Republican votes, and pick up some independent votes," said political analyst John Dadian. "There's a very good chance that he will get in the runoff."The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the November primary. In September, a 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll showed Gloria leading Bry by a two-to-one margin, with 31 percent of voters supporting Gloria, and 15 percent supporting Bry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Carmen Favela was part of the duo that kicked off the Mujeres Brew Club, a Latina-led group that started in 2019 and teaches women the history and basics of craft beer."I thought to myself I wonder how many more women would like to learn more about craft beer, not just enjoy it but understand all of it," Favela said. Up until the COVID-19 pandemic, the club held their meetings at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan."There is no way I could just cancel it because of COVID-19 or just stop it, it’d be hard for me. It became something I honestly didn’t expect and I knew this was something we needed in the industry," Favela described.Thankfully, Favela didn't have to because the answer wasn't far. It was right across the street at an old vacant taproom brewhouse."It's got a full brewing system and a tap system. But it's comic pioneers that he credits for elevating his art form.The founding member of Run DMC has grown up around comics, spending his childhood collecting, drawing, and envisioning himself in a super suit of his own. It's comics that he says taught him As a little kid, all I did was read, draw, and collect comic books. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As people continue to try to purchase essential items, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office says it's protecting consumers by going after retailers who are illegally price gouging."We have received well over 100 calls to our tip line," said Damon Mosler, the Chief of the Econcomic Crimes Division at the DA's Office.It's illegal for businesses to overcharge more than 10 percent for essential items during a state of emergency.RELATED: Unemployment benefits could take weeks amid coronavirus pandemicMosler said there are currently 70 reports under investigation."We are going to the store to verify the price and the item and we are serving them with a warning letter explaining what the law is, explaining what the violation is," he explained.After that the crews, who are undercover, will return to the reported store to do compliance checks and make sure the retailers are responsive to the warnings.RELATED: City Council puts stop on evictions during coronavirus pandemicAbout a dozen business owners have been warned in the county so far. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said.
