SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A parole board Tuesday granted parole to an actor previously convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend nearly two dozen times.Shelley Malil, who had a supporting role in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” was convicted seven years ago of repeatedly stabbing Kendra Beebe in San Marcos.Beebe spoke to 10News after Malil was granted Parole. “Why are we letting out this person who’s going to go back out and go back on the internet and date and possibly relapse and hurt somebody else.” RELATED: 40-Year-Old Virgin actor deemed suitable for parole, 10 years after brutally stabbing ex-girlfriendAs of this year, Malil had served 9 years of his 12-years-to-life sentence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A newly discovered comet flew past Earth early on Saturday, giving those who awoke early enough to catch it quite a show.Comet Neowise was spotted by a NASA telescope by the same name on March 27, according to NASA. Since then, the space agency says the comet has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, including Parker Solar Probe, NASA’s Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.NASA says the comet came within Mercury's orbit on July 3, where the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris trail.Neowise, which measures about three miles across, will be visible in Earth's Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it will change course and head toward the outer solar system, NASA says.For the next few days, the comet will be visible about an hour before sunrise in the northeastern sky in the U.S., NASA adds. Depending on local conditions, Neowise may be visible shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12."In its discovery images, Comet Neowise appeared as a glowing, fuzzy dot moving across the sky even when it was still pretty far away," said Amy Mainzer, Neowise principal investigator at the University of Arizona. "As soon as we saw how close it would come to the Sun, we had hopes that it would put on a good show."In San Diego County, at least one stargazer was able to catch the comet streak across the early morning sky. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who was convicted of robbing a Chula Vista bank and fleeing the scene on a Lime scooter was sentenced on Monday to nearly five years in prison.Mario Daniel Haro, a 32-year-old United States citizen who lived in Rosarito, Mexico, was sentenced to 57 months in prison and must pay restitution for robbing the Chase Bank at 2121 Olympic Parkway in October 2019.In February, Haro admitted to entering the bank, telling a bank teller he had a gun, and handing the teller a threatening note, reading “I have a GUN! Give me all money. NO INK Packages."The teller complied with Haro's demands, officials said, and gave him about ,000. Haro then fled the scene on a Lime electric scooter.“Unfortunately this defendant failed to take advantage of his second chance and committed an additional violent crime,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “As this case demonstrates, individuals who reoffend will be investigated, arrested and convicted and usually the sentence will be longer. Hopefully this time the defendant learned a lesson.”The 2019 robbery was Haro's second conviction for bank robbery. He was also convicted of robbing a Chula Vista bank in 2008, officials added. 1200

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A march involving attorneys and staff from the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. is set to take place in downtown San Diego Monday afternoon.The Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders march will begin outside of the Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. office on Broadway at 12:15 p.m. Participants will walk to the courtyard of the federal courthouse, across the street from the San Diego Hall of Justice on 330 Broadway.Once at the courtyard, longtime San Diego County public defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright will deliver remarks and “address the role public defenders play in our criminal justice system and the statewide call from California public defenders to end police violence,” according to a news release.The San Diego march is one of several involving public defenders and attorneys happening Monday across California.Other counties having their own Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders marches include Los Angeles County, Orange County, Santa Clara County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco County, and Alameda County. 1063
