BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 9,300 kidnapped children in China have been rescued since April 2009 since a nationwide campaign was launched to crack down on human trafficking, according to the Ministry of Public Security Thursday.In a statement, the ministry encouraged the involvement of civilians in providing clues to help the police rescue minors -- especially those being abused and forced to beg on the streets.In less than three weeks, a Chinese microblog called "Street Photos to Rescue Child Beggars" attracted 175,000 followers and posted more than 2,500 images of begging children online for parents to identify.The blog was set up last month by a professor with the Rural Development Institute of the Beijing-based China Academy of Social Sciences. It has helped rescue six children so far.However, the ministry noted in the statement that children kidnapped to become beggars took up only a small portion of all cases of child beggars. In most cases, children were taken to beg along with their parents or relatives.The ministry has urged police authorities across the country to closely cooperate with civil affairs, urban management and health departments in apprehending people who force children to become beggars.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has promised that the firm will simplify the process by which Android phone users agree to share their data.It follows questions in the US Senate about how much location information is stored by mobile handsets.Speaking in the UK at a conference on privacy, he also revealed that Google plans to offer web users more control over their online profile.Mr Schmidt insisted that the company took the matter "very seriously".He told attendees at the Big Tent debate in Hertfordshire that his firm was working on "a series of projects" aimed at increasing transparency.Those include a revised Google Dashboard, where users can see what data they have shared with the search giant."It is worth stressing that we can only do this with data you have shared with Google. We can't be a vacuum-cleaner for the whole internet," he said.Mr Schmidt stressed that Google was on the side of consumers when it came to privacy. "In general we take the position that you own your data and should be able to opt in or out of a service," he said.But he added that if users gave consent for sharing data, it would help Google improve its services."If you choose to give us that information we can do a better job. If we know a little bit more about you we can offer better targeted search," he explained.Super injunctions revealed A recent hearing in the US Senate quizzed Google on the amount of data stored on Android handsets. The company argued that it allows people to opt out of location-based services.But Mr Schmidt conceded that the terms and conditions whereby users sign up to services needs to be simplified. LOS ANGELES, May 25 (Xinhua) -- NASA project managers bade farewell to the Mars rover Spirit on Wednesday after sending a final set of commands to the stranded vehicle.This marks the completion of one of the most successful missions of interplanetary exploration ever launched, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said."Last night, just after midnight, the last recovery command was sent to Spirit," said John Callas, the Mars Exploration Rover Project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Los Angeles."It would be an understatement to say this was a significant moment. Since the last communication from Spirit on March 22, 2010, as she entered her fourth Martian winter, nothing has been heard from her."NASA has tried in vain to regain communication with Spirit since it got stuck in sand about two years ago. The rover last communicated on March 22, 2010, as Martian winter approached and the rover's solar-energy supply declined.NASA checked frequently in recent months for possible reawakening of Spirit as solar energy available to the rover increased during Martian spring, but to no avail.A series of additional re-contact attempts ended on Wednesday, designed for various possible combinations of recoverable conditions, according to JPL."Our job was to wear these rovers out exploring, to leave no unutilized capability on the surface of Mars, and for Spirit, we have done that," said Callas.
