SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility.For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two thieves prowled an entire neighborhood in Oak Park looking for something very specific on the vehicles.Along Blackton Drive, the sense of safety is shattered for David Cabrera.  Late Wednesday morning, Cabrera and his wife returned home to a neighbor telling them to check their license plate.  He discovered the registration sticker on his truck stolen. He had sliced his sticker into eight different sections as a precaution but it didn't help.Cabrera's surveillance cameras revealed the thieves:  a man and a woman walking together. A tree obscures the camera's view, but a woman can be seen behind Cabrera's truck, while the man stands and looks around.  The woman gets up and the two walk off.Seconds later, a neighbor saw the same woman peeling off a sticker from another car and the neighbor ran out of her kitchen to confront her.  That neighbor told the woman to put it back.  The woman got verbally aggressive but did put the sticker back.Neighbors called 911 but the thieves took off.  After Cabrera posted details on the Nextdoor app, five other neighbors reported also getting hit that morning."It's a feeling of violation. You want to feel safe in your own neighborhood," said Cabrera. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When professors at San Diego City College weren't prepping for fall semester, they were getting in on a little TikTok action thanks to English professor Christy Ball."I watched a lot of TikTok this summer, I fell in love with all the silliness in America and I really needed it when all the bad news was coming and coming," Ball said.She teamed up with 30 of her colleagues "to let students know we understand this isn't the ideal learning environment but that we believe in them, and we are so committed to their success and we're going to work with them the whole way." Together, they created a 2-minute TikTok-inspired clip with messages like "We're in this together," "You're not alone," and "We are listening."The video's editor and SDCC English professor Kevin Gossett said, "Putting something out like this is a good reminder that we're ready for this. We've been doing months and months of training in so many different ways just for this moment to support you."Gossett said it took a few weeks to edit the video but the hardest part was teaching writers how to TikTok."I did zoom recording sessions where I was walking them step-by-step. I'm like 'Throw it in air so it looks like someone threw it at you' because a lot of people didn't understand 'film magic.'"Ball added, "We recognize this is super strange seeing your class and their kids in the background, pets everywhere, so we wanted to play with that and have fun with the video."Overall, Ball said she wanted one message in the video loud and clear: "We care more about their well being than we do the assignment, we know we can help them get the work done. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With the pandemic prompting San Diegans to wear facial coverings, and practice physical distancing and stringent hand hygiene, flu season's start has been slowed.According to the county's Influenza Watch report published Oct. 21, San Diego County has reported 10 flu cases to date this season, compared to 320 cases at this time last year. Last year's season totaled 20,711 flu cases.The county says no influenza-related deaths have been reported so far this season. The CDC says the flu season in the U.S. typically occurs in the fall and winter, with the season peaking in December and February.County health officials say health precautions due to the coronavirus and an increase in the rate of residents receiving flu vaccinations have kept flu numbers low so far."Influenza activity has been very low so far this season in San Diego County. This may in part be due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Seasonal influenza vaccinations are being recorded in the San Diego Immunization Registry at a higher rate than at this same point in any previous season, with 637,696 San Diegans immunized through week 42," the county's report said.Week 42 covers case totals up to the week ending Oct. 17.According to the county, 70% of this year's flu cases cover Influenza A, while 30% include Influenza B. 1445

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S Customs and Border Protection apprehended two suspects wanted in connection to both an attempted homicide and a homicide Wednesday afternoon. According to CBP, the incident began Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry after a 35-year-old U.S. citizen entered the crossing with two other U.S. citizen passengers, a 37-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. The vehicle was escorted to a secure location for processing after officers were alerted that one of the travelers was wanted. After investigating the situation, officers learned that the driver, Monica Cecilia Jimenez was wanted for attempted murder and Omar Alapizco was wanted for homicide by the Oceanside Police Department for the same crime. U.S. Marshals and the Oceanside Police Department responded and took custody of both Jimenez and Alapizco. 861
