As the number of COVID-19 cases rapidly increases, you might feel more apprehensive about eating out now.So WFTS took your questions straight to a former health inspector, who believes certain food safety protocols should be followed when you're dining out."I think everyone should be wearing a mask if they're in public," said Danielle Egger, who started her own restaurant consultation company called Florida Food Safety Systems, after being a health inspector for many years.She says since restaurant inspections are public, you should look up past inspections here to see how the restaurant performed before the pandemic hit."If the restaurant has had concerns about sanitation in the past before COVID started, it might be a good idea to consider going elsewhere. And if sanitation issues, handwashing, and cleanliness were an issue before this ever started, chances are they're struggling to get up to compliance now," she explained.When you walk into a restaurant, Egger says employees should be constantly cleaning, especially highly-touched areas."I have been advising them to set timers so that every 30 minutes, they're wiping down high touched areas. That's going to be any of the door handles, any of the points of sale systems that they're using to complete transactions," she said.And that includes stylists, pens, and even credit card machines because the virus can live on surfaces."There are some studies that say that COVID-19 is possibly able to survive on a surface like plastic for about three days so it's definitely possible," Egger said.But can the virus live on food?"It appears as though coronavirus and COVID is actually heat sensitive, which means that most of the time, those temperatures we're cooking those food items too is able to cook off any kind of the virus," she explained.And you may have heard that eating outside is safer than inside. So why is that?"I believe there were three reported cases of people consuming food in restaurants in an enclosed area and they actually did find the virus in the air conditioning system," she said.And masks are a must right now."Anybody that's facing our customers should be wearing masks, that includes general managers. That includes anybody who's out on the floor, interacting with customers or employees," she said.And the biggest mistake people make when wearing a mask? They don't cover their nose."You're still running the risk of inhaling that potentially contaminated air. So we have to keep everything covered," she explained.Egger also recommends restaurants display on their door what they're doing to keep you safe and what they expect of their customers.That may include things like 'masks required', 'please social distance' or 'think about take-out if you're not feeling well.'''Egger says disposable menus are the safest but if a restaurant hands you a reusable menu, they should be sanitizing that menu between each customer.WFTS' Wendy Ryan first reported this story. 2971

Authorities have removed 23 passengers from a Carnival Cruise Line ship in Australia after a series of brawls, New South Wales police and Carnival said in statements.Cellphone video from the ship shows passengers tussling with each other, and with security officers, outside a nightclub and by a swimming pool amid shouting and screams from alarmed onlookers.Carnival said police on Friday removed "a large family group who had been involved in disruptive acts aboard Carnival Legend. Our security team responded in several instances to extremely unruly behavior by these guests. One particular altercation in the nightclub began when the group physically attacked other guests."Police said they were told several men fought in the early morning hours Friday while the ship was about 220 kilometers (137 miles) off Jervis Bay. At least 18 people have been killed and 178 others injured after a train derailed in Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan, according to an update from the island's transport ministry.Initially, the ministry said 22 people died, but it later revised the number.The train was traveling between the cities of Shulin and Taitung when it derailed Sunday on a coastal line reportedly popular with tourists.The train was carrying 366 passengers when the accident occurred just before 5 pm local time, the transport ministry said. 529

At Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy, Battalion 146 recently went through some intense rescue scenarios.“Help a brother out. Come on,” shouted an instructor.The person responsible for training the future firefighters is academy coordinator Andy Densmore, who has been in this industry for almost four decades and is retiring at the end of this year.“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “We have to make the change.”Changes due to COVID-19.Since the pandemic hit, academy class sizes have been cut by a third, cadets are screened before they enter the facilities, they socially distance themselves once they’re in and wear masks when they’re not in face pieces.“The nice part is we asked these kids for their commitment the first day that we meet them and we said, ‘there’s only one variable in this entire program and it’s you,’” Densmore said.As Densmore’s career comes to a close during this crisis, Camila Schafer, class president of Battalion 146, is just starting hers.“Whether it’s a pandemic, it’s a fire, it’s a surf rescue, we’ll answer that call,” she said.Schafer says instructors can control all aspects of a cadet’s day while on campus but once they leave the academy, however, cadets are committed to an individual responsibility.“On weekends, we’re studying. we’re hitting the books,” she said. “We’re making sure that we’re not out there putting our battalion in jeopardy and possibly getting this virus.”Employment of firefighters is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistcs.While this fire academy is training with new challenges, Densmore believes smaller class sizes could make cadets like Schafer better prepared than firefighters of the past.“We don’t graduate mediocre,” he said. “Our standards are really, really high. Authorities and the Sacramento Kings are preparing for protests that are expected Thursday after the funeral for Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man who was killed by police in his grandmother's backyard.Over the past week, the Kings have found themselves at the center of the conflict between police and outraged members of the community.Protesters have blocked the entrance to the arena on two occasions in protest over the March 18 shooting. Last Thursday, the protest forced the Kings and Atlanta Hawks to play in a nearby empty arena.On Tuesday, the doors of the arena closed as protesters arrived, again preventing fans from getting in.Sacramento police said Wednesday they are talking with team officials to plan for the Thursday game against the Indiana Pacers.
