SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced Wednesday for trying to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border while on duty in 2016.Noe Lopez, 37, of Chula Vista, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine in exchange for cash. He pled guilty to the charges in June 2017.Investigators say the former Border Patrol agent agreed to pick up backpacks containing the drugs from the north side of the border while on duty. Undercover DEA agents used substances resembling drugs in the backpack drops.RELATED: Border Patrol agent arrested in North San Diego County on drug , weapons chargesIn a conversation with an undercover agent, Lopez discussed the area known as "Goat Canyon" as a preferred location, according to investigators, saying "Honestly, the thing is that there aren’t—there aren’t any cameras. Nothing, nothing, nothing."At times, investigators said Lopez switched shifts with another agent to be in a preferred area for a drop.Lopez would load the backpacks in his Border Patrol vehicle and deliver what he thought were narcotics after work in exchange for thousands of dollars, according to the charges.RELATED: Border Patrol agent found not guilty on murder charges, hung jury on two lesser charges"This is a fitting sentence for a law enforcement agent who, instead of policing drug traffickers, joined them," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said in a release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grant from the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce is easing the pain of the pandemic and keeping businesses afloat.Captain Bill Wilkerson, the owner of Malihini Sportfishing, has fished since he was old enough to cast.Wilkerson said at the age of seven, he and his grandmother would walk to the bus stop and ride two hours to get to Venice Beach."We used to fish on Venice Pier sun up to sun down," he said smiling.He said his grandmother was trying to protect him, by taking him out of the L.A. neighborhood where they lived.Wilkerson said he had friends in elementary and middle school she knew were getting into trouble, "I went back 10, 15 years ago to see if I could locate some of those friends, and most of them were gone due to gangs and drugs and things like that."He said he would never forget the time she took him to Santa Monica to go fishing. It was an extra 45 minutes on the bus, but it was worth it, he said. While under the pier, he said he saw a boat pull up, let people off, take others on, and leave.He asked his grandmother what they were doing. She said, "do you want to go fishing on a boat?"She knew the captain and the next weekend he hosted Wilkerson. There was no going back to fishing on the pier after that trip.Wilkerson named the captains he worked for over the years and said he was thankful most for Raymond Sobeick, who he said taught him how to fish and opened him up to the opportunity to be a business owner. "My dad growing up told me that I would have to work 10 times harder than anybody else, just because of the color of my skin," he said pausing. "It's true."He said it was only true at the beginning of launching his business.After Wilkerson worked hard, bought the Malihini in 2006, and launched his business, he says from there it wasn't smooth sailing."In 2011, I was diagnosed with cancer, a brain tumor... In 2017, the boat struck a whale."The accident creating a mountain of debt."We started 2020 strong and then COVID-19 happened," he said.Wilkerson said they applied for every grant and loan available and didn't get anything. Then, he heard about the Black Business Relief Grant Fund through ABC 10News. He was awarded a ,000 grant and supported with tools and mentors who guided him on pivoting his business plan."They really want to see Black and minority and Asian businesses succeed ... To me, it's been invaluable. I mean, to see that there are doors that can be opened for a guy who owns a fishing boat who can't get financing because of whatever," he chuckled.Wilkerson said the grant paid for fuel and parts. He said they're hoping to get a loan to carry them through the next few months. He added that his faith has gotten him through many challenges."He's never let us starve, he's always made sure we have food, we had water. Our bills, for the most part, were paid," he said choked up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Hillcrest man in search of his stolen bikes made a startling discovery when he stepped into an abandoned church.Early Wednesday morning, surveillance video shows two men stealing three pricey bikes after cutting a metal lock for a garage, as Wilbur Kookmyer slept inside his condo on Georgia Street."Felt angry, felt violated," said Kookmyer.A day later, Kookmyer went in search of his bikes and he didn't go far. Next door - inside an abandoned church at Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue - a security guard agreed to let him have a look.Room after room, he found belongings left behind: clothes, food, and even a drone. In one room is a makeshift bed. There is a bike in another, but it's not his."It's a homeless hotel. They come and go as they please. Free of charge," said Kookmyer.But mostly, what Kookmyer sees is filth."Smells like urine and feces. Needles and trash. It's just disgusting. Looks like a landfill and a health hazard," said Kookmyer.The church was sold last year to a developer. LMC North Park Holdings is still awaiting permits to demolish the site. In the meantime, it's become a campground for transients."Constantly coming and going. Get everything boarded up, but breaking back in every time," said Kookmyer.While Kookmyer was recording, they ran into several people, who were escorted off the property. Kookmeyer says since the church was sold, he's seen a spike in crime - from vandalism to home and car break-ins."My next-door neighbor caught someone breaking in and using his shower," said Kookmyer.Wilbur says it's time for the demolition to happen and for security to be stepped up. "There's no excuse for it being this filthy and creating that much trouble for people around the church," said Kookmyer.A spokesperson for LMC North Park Holdings issued this statement:“We share the concerns of the neighbors and are working diligently to better secure the site until we are able to obtain the permits necessary to begin demolition. The security team, which is contracted to be on site 24/7, is having some difficulty, so we are in the process of obtaining additional resources to better control access. We have also scheduled contractors to repair damage to the fence and given the police the authority to make arrests.” 2284

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A father and daughter were taken to the hospital for injuries related to an apartment fire in Carmel Valley Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters were called to an apartment complex on the 12000 block of Torrey Bluff Drive around 4:30 p.m. The department says the man was taken to the hospital with burns to his hands and face while his daughter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire was reportedly contained to only one room of the apartment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze may have been started by some sort of device the father was using to smoke.
