ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The owner of a popular iron horse statue in Alpine believes a lot of planning went into stealing it. Rita Gallant says the iron horse was taken in the middle of the night. The statue stood 14-feet tall and weighed approximately 300 pounds. Gallant says she didn’t notice it was gone until days later, so she checked her surveillance tapes. “We believe they came in over the course of a couple of days. They had to remove some very large rebar wire that was in it that’s right here. So we had four of these that were in it to secure it to the ground,” Gallant said. Gallant says she bought the statue 15 years ago and set it up at her store, Double S Tack and Feed. Since then, the statue had become something of an icon in the neighborhood. 774

Actor Mario Lopez is set to play Colonel Sanders in an upcoming KFC-sponsored Lifetime original mini-movie.According to a press release, Lopez will star as Colonel Harland Sanders in "A Recipe for Seduction."The 15-minute mini-movie, which is the first of its kind, is set to air Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.The movie is about a "young heiress content with the affections of a suitor handpicked by her mother. ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. – One small county in California has become a safe haven from the coronavirus. There’s only been one reported case of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, but now, hundreds of visitors from across the country are going there to vacation.“I have never seen this many people here,” said Deanna Jang, the owner of the general store in the county.Business owners like Jang worry the visitors they rely on may bring more problems than profit. “It’s been very good for business, it’s scary though because you just don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Jang.Jang’s family has owned a local general store for decades. She’s nervously watching as cases rise in counties all around hers. She fears a summer shutdown in this tourist town could take her family business with it.“You need to make your year’s income here in two months because the rest of the months you just kind of get by,” she said. “It’s scary, it’s like, ‘What does this mean for next year, and the year after?’ Because we’d have to recover from that.”“It’s sort of a double-edged sword of wanting to get our economy started and worrying that the people who are supporting the economy are going to bring COVID into our community,” said Nichole Williamson of the Alpine County Health Department.Williamson said the worry has locals considering what would typically be unthinkable there. “We have had people who work in the short-term rental business tell us they would not be upset if we limited short-term rentals right now,” she said.One driving concern: the county has few medical resources.“We have no private physicians, no hospitals, and we have a two-day a week family clinic with a nurse practitioner, and she was called up into active duty in the Army,” said Williamson.First responders are also in short supply. “If we had a few law enforcement and a few firefighters exposed, we’d be in a very vulnerable situation,” said Williamson.But with this vulnerability comes a choice: to fear the virus or face it. “You just have to learn to live with it,” said Jang.For hotel owner John Flannigan, there is no choice. He said he is making safety his top priority to make sure his business can stay open. “The economy is in its worst case,” said Flannigan. “It’s worse than 2001 and 2008 combined, times ten, so I don’t think we should be hurting anyone’s ability to make a living. I think we should be figuring out solutions so they can make a living.” Flannigan runs Sorenson’s Resort and has moved all his dining to be outdoor, open air and is making sure guests have space to spread out and social distance.As worried as many community members are, they hope they can keep business going safely.“It’s not about me. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for the people responsible for breaking into the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine and setting several animals loose.The break-in happened between Saturday night and early morning hours of Sunday morning, according to Anges Barrelet, the CEO of the Children's Nature Retreat Foundation.The non-profit houses farm livestock, as well as exotic animals.Barrelet says the intruders didn’t steal anything but cut open two enclosures. There are more than a 130 animals in the roughly 20 acres property, and they set more than a dozen animals loose.Some of them were injured by cages on the way out, getting cuts and scrapes, but the staff was able to put them all back into their enclosures.None of the animals escaped the perimeter fencing."It's completely ridiculous, and it's awful,” Barrelet said. "They put those animals in danger."The enclosures have been temporarily patched up, but Barrelet says they had to close to the public for a few days until the fences can be properly repaired. She says it’s just not safe to have visitors at the park until the barriers can be fixed.The Children's Nature Retreat hopes to reopen next week. 1213
