DETROIT — Insulin is the difference between life and death for people with Type 1 diabetes. They say they are tired of watching the cost of the drug continue to increase in the United States. WXYZ went to Jillian Rippolone’s home as she met with diabetics. They spoke about their struggles getting the insulin they need. It's a struggle Rippolone first experienced when, as a child, her parents lost their health insurance. “We were turned away because we didn’t have the money at the time to afford our insulin, which is this little bottle right here," she said. "This was 0 in the '90s. I needed three of them.”Rippolone says she feared for her life as her parents worked to get the money needed. Now, she says the situation is worse for many patients because the cost of insulin has increased in the United States. “For my 30 day supply, it is ,020,” Rippolone said. Michele Busticker, a woman meeting with other diabetics at Rippolone’s home, said she thought she was covered because she had health insurance. Then she dropped a vile on the floor. Insurance wouldn't cover a replacement.“I had to actually admit myself to the emergency room to get insulin to survive,” Busticker said. Mike Cowan says he turned to Rippolone for help when an Uber passenger stole his medicine as he drove.“Insurance isn’t going to make up for that, so I had to seek it out on the black market,” Cowan said. The black market he turned to is a vast network of people who offer insulin online. Rippolone is a leader in it. “Because when there is a diabetic in need you get it. Because if you don’t get insulin you are going to die,” Rippolone said.Diabetics use different amounts of insulin each month, based on their blood sugar. Rippolone runs a 1748

DENVER, Colo. – Powerful images emerged from downtown Denver on Saturday. Hundreds of people protesting police brutality laid face down at the Colorado state capitol to honor George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died in police custody last Monday. The unique demonstration mirrored the position Floyd was in during his final moments, face down against pavement.A viral video of the 46-year-old’s arrest shows a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he gasped for air and said “I can’t breathe” before he lost consciousness. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital shortly after. The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the man’s murder on Friday. Chauvin and three other officers have also been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department for their role in Floyd’s death, but many say it’s not enough and they want to see the other officers face charges as well.Saturday's protest in Denver was one of many across the country demanding justice for Floyd. It began peacefully but turned tense during the evening hours. There were several small fires and instances of fireworks. CASTAWAY CAY, BAHAMAS (WPTV) — Disney is responding after it was revealed several Disney Cruise Line employees remained on the company's private island in the Bahamas as Hurricane Dorian made landfall Sunday.Disney said the employees remained on Castaway Cay as the hurricane swept through Great Abaco and later made landfall in Grand Bahama.Castaway Cay is about 11 miles away from South Abaco.In a statement, Disney Cruise said they are in contact with the island to make sure their crew is taken care of during the storm."Castaway Cay remains south of the more significant weather and is currently experiencing tropical storm force winds, which based on the current forecast, are expected for the next several hours before gradually diminishing," Disney Cruise said in part. DAYTON, Ohio — The city of Dayton battened down the hatches Saturday for a rally event held by the Ku Klux Klan.After the events of Charlottesville, city officials in Ohio weren't taking any chances as the notorious hate group exercised their first amendment rights. Officers and security aid came in from Cincinnati, Columbus and even Toledo as counterprotesters poured into Dayton.The city of Dayton blocked streets with large trucks Saturday and brought in officers from other jurisdictions to keep protesters separated from members of an obscure Klan group called the Honorable Sacred Knights.The group obtained a permit for the rally months ago. City officials and community leaders organized an effort called Dayton United Against Hate.In the end, only nine members of the Klan showed up, and could barely be seen through the double chain-link fence and wall of police. Protesters rallied around the fence, chanting anti-hate rhetoric and waving signs at the members inside.Although the event ended without a hitch, or even a single arrest, Dayton itself didn't get through as unscathed as things may have looked.Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein said the city estimated it spent about 0,000 on security costs for the event.City officials said many of the security measures implemented Saturday were intended specifically to keep Dayton residents safe with concealed carry and open carry of weapons.Dickstein said the city estimated around 0,000 was spent on personnel costs and 0,000 on materials needed for the rally.“We have very little way to recapture that spent money,” Dickstein said.Richard Biehl, Dayton police chief, said he was “very pleased” with security Saturday.“This clearly was a safety challenge for our city and our community,” he said.Biehl said his department did not make any arrests, and no use of force or injuries were reported.
