But even quarantined inside nursing homes, the novel coronavirus still managed to find a way in.Tonya Dubois is the director of nursing for the Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown, New Hampshire. At one point back in May, 150 residents here were infected with COVID-19. By the time the outbreak was over, 50 seniors had died from complications related to COVID-19.The staff was heartbroken.“What people had to see, it was very hard,” Dubois recalled as she held back tears. “These staff members stayed and held patients' hands; they never died alone.”Limiting the virus spread has been hard. Months later, only two people in the nursing home now have COVID-19. That’s thanks in part to a no-visitor policy here and across the country in other senior care facilities. Isolating for safety though has also come at the expense of senior’s mental health.“A lot of them don’t get to talk to people all day. Some have families, and some don’t,” said Tammie Richard, who also works as a nurse at Hillsborough.Through much of the spring, Richard noticed how depressed residents were getting without haircuts. Because of the virus, the facility’s beauty parlor had to be been shut down. Richard, who's also a cosmetologist, decided to take her show on the road.Or at least down the hallway.She found a way to do trims, cuts, and color safely. While wearing PPE and sanitizing her equipment, she able to cut residents' hair one room at a time.“The touching, touching, and talking to somebody, the hour, the half-hour they love getting their hair done. I just want them to feel comfortable, relaxed, and happy,” Richard added.With residents here cut off from the outside world, a simple cut is doing wonders for these seniors’ mental health. Because Richard is a licensed nursing assistant, she's considered essential. She and another cosmetologist on staff can check the resident’s vital signs, while at the same time taking a little more off the top.Nursing homes nationwide are now adopting similar ideas.“It makes them not feel as depressed. It makes them have a different level of comfort. The State of Washington will soon have to rehab a lake that is overrun with an invasive species: Goldfish.The fish have filled West Medical Lake, along with Koi, and are crowding out other fish species.Pet owners likely dumped goldfish into the lake, and that may be the source of the problem, says the Division of Fish and Wildlife. Officials say while some believe it's a service to goldfish to release them into a lake, it is a disservice to the ecosystem.Goldfish are a domesticated version of a wild carp from East Asia and were developed due to artificial selection created by humans.Simply put, goldfish are mostly for visual effect.West Medical Lake, near Spokane, Washington, is known as one of the best producing opening day trout lakes in the state, according to the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. The sidewalk vendors who have set up shop along the Mission Beach boardwalk may soon have to a find a new place to sell their wares. It's part of a series of regulations a City Council committee advanced at its meeting Thursday. The vendors have come in waves after a new state law decriminalized the practice, reducing any fines to administrative. The city, as a result, is no longer enforcing its rules that conflict with the law. As such, the vendors have set up shop along Mission Beach and other areas with heavy foot traffic. On Thursday, the boardwalk had vendors selling jewelry, sports team beach bags, and even tobacco pipes. "I hope they don't take this area away from us, the tourists love us and we just love this area to set up and vend," said Tina Saito, who was selling the pipes and rock necklaces on the boardwalk. The state law blocks the city from instituting restrictions based on economics, so it can't stop a vendor from opening outside an established business. The city can, however, enact regulations based on public safety. As such, the city's proposed ordinance would require food vendors - like the ones that lined Balboa Park at Pride earlier this month - to have county health permits and a food handlers card. It would also restrict hours in parks, and place a summer moratorium on vending in Balboa Park. The city would also block vendors from popular areas like Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, the Mission Beach boardwalk, the La Jolla Shores boardwalk, and the area around Petco Park on Padre game days. Finally, it would disallow vendors from selling things like alcohol, drug and tobacco paraphernalia, and weapons. Saito, who sells the tobacco pipes, called that potential decision disappointing.
