BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- China's advertisement sector generated 189.96 billion yuan (27.78 billion U.S. dollars) of revenue in 2008, up 9.11 percent over the previous year, China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) said Sunday.     The revenue from TV commercials reached 50.15 billion yuan, an increase of 13.22 percent over the previous year. It accounted for26.4 percent of the total, the largest share of the market.     Income from newspaper advertisements rose 6.36 percent from a year ago to 34.27 billion yuan in 2008.     The number of foreign-funded advertisement companies in China soared 27.73 percent from the previous year to 737 by the end of 2008, which accounted for 0.4 percent of the total advertisement firms across the country, according to the SAIC.

BAMAKO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday vowed to increase aid to African countries, cancel part of their debts, and expand trade with and investment in these countries.     Hu made the statement while meeting with his Malian counterpart Amadou Toumany Toure.     Hu, making his first visit to this western African nation, was accorded a 21-gun salute in a welcome ceremony before the two presidents started talks.     This is Hu's second African tour since the landmark China-Africa summit in 2006 when Hu announced eight measures to promote ties with Africa, including massive tariff cuts and debt exemptions for scores of African countries, and doubling aid to Africa over a three-year period.     In the past two years, China has increased aid to African countries, eliminated tariff for goods from some least developed African nations, and cancelled parts of the debts owed by African countries, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said days ahead of Hu's visit. TAIPEI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan authorities has temporarily raised the daily quota of mainland tourists from 3,000 to 7,200, to cope with the increasing number of travelers.     Tse Lap-kong, a Taiwanese official, said the temporary adjustment was meant to cope with the surge of tourist numbers in the coming two weeks, a travel peak season for mainlanders.     It is estimated that more than 30,000 mainland tourists could arrive in Taiwan in the coming week, with a daily average of 4,100.     Daily mainland tourist arrivals were less than 3,000 in the first few months since Taiwan was opened to them as a destination last July, and the temporary change would use the unfulfilled quota from that period, Tse said.     The daily quota would remain at 3,000 on a yearly average, he said.     Taiwan authorities might also extend the allowed period for visiting mainland businessmen and professionals, with a final decision in late April, local media reported.     Business trips would be extended from a maximum of two weeks to one month, and visiting businessmen and experts would be allowed an additional five days based on their travel schedule, according to the reports.     Industrial and commercial organizations with an annual turnover of more than 30 million New Taiwan dollars (883,260 U.S. dollars) would have the number of invited mainlanders increased from 50 to 200, while the number for those below 30 million New Taiwan dollars would rise to 45 from 15, said the reports.     Local authorities were also planning to shorten the approval time for applications of mainland businessmen from one month to two weeks.     More than 174,000 Chinese mainland tourists visited Taiwan from July last year till early April, according to mainland statistics.     The daily number of mainland visitors to the island on organized trips reached about 3,000 at the end of March, he said, adding that the number soared to more than 4,000 on April 7.     The Chinese mainland and Taiwan agreed to allow mainland touri

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- China's cement production expanded 10.3 percent year on year to 159 million tonnes in the first two months, amid the booming fixed-asset investment, data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have shown.     The growth rate was 6.8 percentage points higher than that for December, as the fixed-asset investment accelerated due to the government's 4 trillion yuan (584.8 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package, according to the MIIT data released on Friday.     The wholesale price was 284 yuan per ton, 5 yuan cheaper than the price peak in November, but 27.8 yuan higher than that for January.     China's urban fixed asset investment rose 26.5 percent year on year to 1.027 trillion yuan (150.35 billion U.S. dollars) in the first two months, as the government's stimulus plan propped up construction of housing and railways.     MIIT figures showed that the output value of the building material sector rose 14 percent year on year in the January-February period, two percentage points higher than that for December.     The figures were calculated based on the comparable working days in the first two months, since China's Lunar New Year holiday fell in February last year, but in January this year.     Zhu Hongren, official with the MIIT said the building material sector was back on track after the stimulus plan showed effect. However, the excess production was still prominent, and efforts must be made to eliminate outdated capacity.
