CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic. It is unlikely they will be able to attend the Aztecs' three other games in 2020 at the 27,000-seat stadium, best known in the San Diego area as the home to the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-19.The game marks the start of Brady Hoke's second stint as San Diego State's coach. He succeeds Rocky Long, who retired on Jan. 8, then on Jan. 27 was hired as New Mexico's defensive coordinator on his 70th birthday.Hoke coached San Diego State to a 13-12 record in 2009 and 2010, including a 35-14 victory over Navy in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl, the Aztecs' first bowl game since 1998.Hoke then coached Michigan from 2011-14, getting fired in 2014 after the Wolverines were 7-6 and 5-7 in his final two seasons. They were 11-2 and 8- 5 in his first two.Hoke returned to San Diego State in 2019 as the defensive line coach. The Aztecs return seven starters on offense and eight on defense from a team that went 10-3 in 2019, including a 48-11 victory over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl.Redshirt sophomore quarterback Carson Baker is set to make his second career start for the Aztecs. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — The Dooley family woke up Wednesday morning to some deflated holiday joy outside their home on Highland Drive."A lot of sadness. It really broke our heart, " said homeowner Gavin Dooley.A check of the surveillance video revealed the culprit. Just before 3 a.m., a black SUV pulls up next to their home, as someone emerges from the passenger side and climbs over their four-foot gate. Moments later, the person throws himself onto a large inflatable of a Santa and his fish taco truck.The scrooge tore through their yard, destroying all of their giant Christmas inflatables."Must have had a good pop on the first one. Second one, he jumps on it twice," said Dooley.That inflatable was a 9-foot tall television, reflecting the images of a projector from the movie "A Christmas Story." The vandal then tackles the final inflatable, which sported North Pole penguins.The end result: 0 dollars worth of inflatables destroyed."Pretty unrepairable. Just like a balloon, they’re popped. There's a huge tear in them," said Dooley.Dooley, who has three children, says his youngest -- his 9-year-old son -- was the most distraught.Also dismayed, some neighbors who bring their toddler girl to see the inflatables every day. That morning, she was nearly in tears."She kept saying, 'Porque? Why? Why would they do this?'" said Dooley.It’s a question Dooley has asked himself. Why? And why at the end of a tough year when holiday cheer is so needed."We were hoping Christmas decorations would bring a lot of joy to people. California is still counting ballots more than three weeks after Election Day.The slow counting process has been underscored by a series of House races in California carrying on for days past November 6. Now, the only remaining uncalled US House race is in California's 21st Congressional District.There, Republican Rep. David Valadao trails Democratic challenger TJ Cox by 506 votes -- or about half a percentage point -- with votes still being counted. If Cox holds on to win, it would give Democrats a net pickup of 40 House seats this year.So why is the process so slow?California officials say the effort is built with a series of safeguards, many of which don't exist in other states. The bottom line: California's vote-counting process is built to take a long time."The philosophy here is, while it may take a little bit longer to finish counting ballots in California, the policies are in place to ensure that all votes can be properly processed and added to the tally -- and I guess better said, that all voices can be heard in the political process," California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a phone interview Wednesday.The state's laws give its voters, about two-thirds of whom cast their ballots by mail, more time to send in their ballots. As long as they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at county elections offices by Friday -- three days after the election -- they're counted.California also requires counties to give voters time to fix any issues with their ballots -- such as a missing signature -- and requires counties to contact those voters to inform them of any problems.When voters mail ballots to the wrong county, those counties are required to send them to the right one.The state allows same-day voter registration. It also allows those whose names do not appear on voter rolls due to clerical errors -- as Los Angeles County had in June, when a printing error left 118,000 names of registered voters off the rolls for the primary -- to cast provisional ballots that must then be checked out.Then, there's the reality that the state with the nation's largest population and 58 counties, with varying staffing levels, simply have more ballots to count.About 7.4 million ballots were counted on election night. (KGTV) - Two teenagers were stopped in their tracks when they looked into a tree and found a creature looking back at them along a Carlsbad street.Two Fridays ago, around 10:30 a.m., a freshman college student did a double take while walking along Babilonia Street in the La Costa area. He called a friend, who drove right over. They made a quick recording."Omigod, look at him," one of the teens is heard whispering in the video.Perched in a tree, about 25 feet up, was a mountain lion, growling.The mother of one of the teens tells ABC 10News soon after they stopped recording, they looked up, and it was gone.Lauren DuBois of Project Wildlife at the San Diego Humane Society, says it's hard to tell the big cat whether the mountain lion was a juvenile or an adult. She says it's not surprising it was in a tree."Not unusual at all. They will climb trees, and rest in trees quite often," said DuBois.Dubois says it was likely relaxing after a long night."They can have up to 100 square miles of a territory. Most of time they are hunting from dusk to dawn, so a lot of the time, that’s where (tree) they will be resting," said DuBois.The concern? Less than half a mile away, is La Costa Meadows Elementary School, which began in-person learning in October.Neighbors tell us there have been sightings of a mountain lion in nearby Box Canyon for years. One of those neighbors did file a report of the most recent sighting with state Fish and Wildlife officials.DuBois say this big cat wasn't being aggressive. What about the growl?"Hey, I’m up here. Don’t want you to be there. I'm going to take off now," said Dubois.She says if you ever do spy a mountain lion in a tree, slowly back away and maintain eye contact."It's probably going to just leave. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The sister of an Orange County teenager whose pleas for help on Interstate 5 prompted 911 calls is explaining the family’s efforts to take the girl to rehab. California Highway Patrol officials said other drivers reported seeing the girl with her hands and feet tied Monday about 7 p.m. Officers pulled over the Toyota Corolla at south I-5 and Cannon Road in Carlsbad and found the girl restrained with tape over her mouth. The girl’s father told the CHP he and his 21-year-old daughter were driving the girl to a drug rehab facility in Mexico. The sister told 10News the girl was bound because her family didn’t want her to escape. RELATED: Teen bound and gagged in car leads to 911 callsThe 17-year-old girl has been doing meth for the past year, dropped out of high school, and was trading sex for drugs, the sister said. The family was concerned the girl would end up dead. The sister also told 10News the teen wasn’t accepted into rehab in Orange County because she had escaped in the past. The family visited the clinic in Tijuana earlier this month to determine it was safe, the sister said. CHP public information officer Kevin Smale said the father and sister were arrested Monday but the district attorney’s office chose not to book them on kidnapping charges.
