BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.

He or she should be fair-minded and above all, love this country, said Wen during his visit to the China University of Political Science and Law on China's Youth Day.     During his trip, Wen first went to the first floor of the university's library, which boasts the country's largest collection of modern law books. Here Wen met senior experts and professors and talked with them about the law history.     "We will better implement the policy of 'administration according to Law'", said Wen, when receiving a collection of law history books from professor Zhang Jinfan, who spent 19 years with some 10 professors to compile these books.     Wen then stepped into the second floor of the library, where he joined the students in the reading room and exchanged views on legal system building.     When asked by Wang Tuo, a PhD candidate majoring in Criminal Law, about his expectations for the concept of "Ruling the Country by Law", Wen said the concept served as a basis for developing economy and maintaining social harmony     To promote democracy, improve the legal system, and rule the country by law is not only a national strategy, but also serves to safeguard the personal rights and freedom of every citizen, he said. BEIJING, June 6 -- Shareholders of China Vanke Co, the country's largest publicly traded property developer, have approved a decision to spend 100 million yuan to rebuild homes in quake-stricken Sichuan.     The company has been under fire from netizens since the earthquake after Wang Shi, its high-profile chairman, announced the real estate giant would donate 2 million yuan to the quake-hit areas and told his employees not to donate more than 10 yuan.    In the face of the ensuing barrage of criticism by the media and netizens, Wang apologized on his blog. At yesterday's meeting, he apologized to shareholders as well: "I want to apologize unconditionally to all shareholders, I won't try to defend myself."     Wang also admitted his comments about quake donations have damaged Vanke's brand image and he was sorry for that.     As a lesson from this episode, Wang said, Vanke would have a spokesperson in the future and try to desist from doing anything that hits its share prices, as it did this time. "More developers may follow suit."     Vanke rose 4.7 percent to 20.5 yuan in Shenzhen trading on Wednesday. The stock has dropped 29 percent this year after almost tripling in 2007. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. NANNING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region became the 10th Chinese locality to have replaced gasoline and diesel oil with bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday out of environmental and energy efficiency concerns.     Petrol stations in all the 14 cities of Guangxi began to sell bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday and in two weeks, traditional petrol and diesel oil will be phased out, said Fu Jian, an official in charge of transport with the regional government.     Fu said about 350,000 motor vehicles and more than 3 million motorbikes will have their tanks cleaned up for the fuel change.     Presently nine other Chinese provinces are using ethanol fuel including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in the northeast, Henan and Hebei provinces in the north, Anhui, Shandongand Jiangsu provinces in the east and the central Hubei Province.     Guangxi is the first Chinese locality to commercially produce ethanol fuel with cassava instead of grain. The region produces 7.8 million tonnes of cassava a year, more than 60 percent of China's total.     It is home to China's first bio-ethanol fuel production base that went into operation in December in the coastal city of Beihai. The base is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of biofuel annually out of about 1.5 million tonnes of cassava.     China banned the use of grain for ethanol production last year to ensure sufficient food supplies, and biofuel manufacturers havesince turned to sweet potatoes, sorghum and straw stalks instead.     Ethanol fuel is believed to help ease China's energy supply bottleneck. Customs statistics say China's net crude oil import climbed at least 12 percent year on year to reach 160 million tonnes in 2007, and the country's reliance on crude oil import is at least 46 percent.     It is also believed to help cut carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, by around 30 percent and 10 percent respectively.     Chinese officials said the country's ethanol fuel sales will reach 30 million tonnes in 2010 to make up half of the total gasoline supplies.
