There are now more than 8 million positive cases of COVID-19 in the US since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University. There are more than 218,000 deaths in the country from the coronavirus.Cases are climbing around the country, as some states report numbers of daily new positive cases as large as they saw earlier this summer. Two states on Friday, Illinois and North Carolina, reported their highest daily COVID-19 positive case count ever. Several states are reporting a low number of available hospital beds in their ICUs, including Michigan and North Dakota.Across the country, there have been more than 53,000 new daily cases each day for the last week. That represents an increase of more than 55 percent in just over a month, according to CNN.Health experts worry this surge of cases could indicate a tough winter ahead. They remind people to take precautions: wash hands, wear a mask, avoid crowds, and remain socially distant from others."They sound very simple, but people are not doing that and that's why we have an uptick in cases," Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, told CBS News this week. He also shared earlier this week that his family will not be getting together for Thanksgiving to stay safe this winter. “Don't assume that because you're in your own home with your own family that you're not going to spread infection,” he said. There are more than 39.2 million positive cases of COVID-19 recorded around the world, according to Johns Hopkins. 1555

Tofu, the red panda — a recent addition at?Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium — died Tuesday, according to a press release from the zoo today. The preliminary pathology report indicated that the 3-year-old red panda, which arrived in Omaha from the Detroit Zoo in October 2017 and joined the new Asian Highlands exhibit in May, likely died of a condition that is known to afflict the species, according to the release.Tofo had excess fluid in her abdomen and chest cavity, "a finding that is most commonly observed in cases of heart failure or cardiomyopathy... (which) are population-wide health issues within the red panda species," the release states. The red panda could have also died of inflammation of the heart from bacterial or viral causes, the release states.According to the release, the Omaha zoo "intends to collaborate with other pathologists and scientists regarding their findings in hopes to better understand these health issues."The zoo still exhibits two red pandas: one female and one male, the release states. 1054

TORREY PINES (KGTV) - Two paragliders, one from San Diego and one from Orange County, died after colliding in mid-air and crashing into a cliff Saturday afternoon. It happened near Torrey Pines Gliderport around 2:45 p.m. Police confirmed both paragliders were men. One of the men was 61-years-old and the other man was 43-years-old, officials said. Both of the men were certified .Witnesses sat stunned when they watched the paragliders become intertwined, "I initially heard the collapse of the chute... I heard a collision, and some kind of sound, and looked over and saw two people falling from the sky," Madeline Henderson said."It was spinning but it was like in slow motion and I could see the guy, I don't know what he was trying to do but I felt bad for them," Irene Marquez said from the passenger seat of a car. She said it was her first time at the Gliderport and was traumatized by what she saw.Rescuers have recovered both of the bodies.Witnesses say the paragliders collided mid-air, a chute collapsed, and they spiraled to the ground and hit the cliffs. 1076

Time's "Person of the Year" for 2018 was revealed on the "Today" show Tuesday morning. The publication named "The Guardians" as their Person of the Year, choosing to spotlight killed and imprisoned journalists, such as The Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul in October, and the journalists from the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. Five of their employees were killed in a shooting earlier this year. 490

The year's race for Kansas governor has the second-largest field since 1908 — seven Republicans and five Democrats are on the ballot. With a field so large, candidates are now paying for more ads on TV and launching bus tours. It's an effort to win your vote for the primary.University of Kansas political science professor Patrick Miller said the crowded field could be the reason why some candidates and their running mates are taking unconventional measures. Specifically, using their own money to self-fund their campaigns."A lot of big donors want to support the party and they don't want to intervene in the primaries," said Miller.Independent Greg Orman has spent 0,000 of his own money on his campaign.Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach's running mate, Wink Hartman, has given or loaned the campaign more than .5 million."It is bizarrely unusual. Extraordinary unusual," said Miller. The crowded field, Miller said, could also have an impact on how many votes a candidate gets —especially on the Republican side.Gov. Jeff Colyer has launched an ad campaign, warning voters "a vote for [Ken Selzer, Jim Barnett or Patrick Kucera] is essentially a vote for Kris Kobach."These candidates are sometimes referred to as spoiler candidates, who draw votes from a major candidate with similar politics and could cause a strong opponent to consequently win.Miller said this happened in the 2016 presidential election with Jill Stein taking voters away from Hillary Clinton."In the primary you have four or five candidates splitting the vote, who are all generally conservative," he said, agreeing this could give Kobach an advantage. "If you don't like his personality or his controversy, you might go vote for Jeff Colyer, who is less controversial, or Ken Selzer, Jim Barnett or any of the other candidates. As the days get closer to primary day, Miller said to expect more knocks at the door, fliers, ads to air on TV and on the radio and so forth. He said the candidate's final push won't necessarily be about issues but rather their personalities and stylistic differences that separate them from the others."In the primaries, that matters," he said. 2170
