The hit & miss nature of #thunderstorms means it's difficult to forecast exactly where the heaviest rain will be—some parts of #bushfire & #drought affected eastern Australia could see 50–100 mm over the next few days; while others may see very little https://t.co/T7MYuIdxkO pic.twitter.com/zgmiBmqcIG— Bureau of Meteorology, Australia (@BOM_au) January 15, 2020 383

The CDC has issued new guidance to nursing homes nationwide on Friday. The guidance calls for all nursing home visits to be prohibited, except in end-of-life situations. The guidance, which goes into effect immediately, comes as spread of the coronavirus grows nationally, and is particularly dangerous for the elderly and disabled. The CDC issued guidelines covering the following:Restrict all visitation except for end of life situations.Restrict all volunteers and non-essential healthcare personnel (HCP), including non-essential healthcare personnel (e.g., barbers)Cancel all group activities and communal diningImplement active screening of residents and HCP for fever and respiratory symptoms"Because of the ease of spread in a long-term care setting and the severity of illness that occurs in residents with COVID-19, facilities should immediately restrict all visitation to their facilities except for end-of-life situations," the CDC's guidelines say. The CDC recommended that nursing homes set up alternative ways for families to communicate with loved ones in nursing homes, including video conferencing. 1129

The judge in the case of a former Dallas police officer charged with murder in the death of Botham Jean, a 26-year-old black accountant, in his own apartment said Monday she intends to sequester the jury for the proceedings.District Judge Tammy Kemp's announcement came after attorneys for the former officer, Amber Guyger, informed the judge that Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot conducted an interview with a local television station Sunday night, despite a gag order in the case.In the interview, Creuzot spoke about how observers were "misinterpreting" the facts of the case and how murder was the appropriate charge for Guyger.Kemp was visibly annoyed and asked, "Let me be clear on last night: The evening prior to the start of this trial, our elected district attorney did an interview about this trial?" Defense lawyers confirmed he had.The judge asked a prosecutor whether he was aware of the interview, and he replied he'd been informed Monday morning. Kemp asked where Creuzot was, and the prosecutor said he hadn't spoken to the district attorney Monday."Hmm. Curious," Kemp said before calling a recess to examine the video.Guyger's defense team requested a mistrial, but when Kemp returned to the courtroom she said she would be sequestering the jury and interviewing them on whether they saw Creuzot's interview.Spectators turned awayGuyger arrived at the Frank Crowley Courts Building in the morning, and local clergy held a prayer vigil outside before Kemp began handling pretrial motions in the case.Interest in the case is high. A large crowd gathered outside the courtroom, unable to enter the 49-seat venue. One woman shouted, "This is an injustice," as would-be spectators were turned away.Pamela Grayson of Duncanville, southwest of Dallas, was particularly upset. She said she's always gotten along well with white people. She's studied hard, earning her doctorate, and never been in trouble with the law, but Jean's case "changed my life," she said."I always thought that if I did right that the police brutality wouldn't come my way," she continued, tears welling in her eyes. "I stand on my own two feet and I do right. Botham did that, and he's still dead. So now, I have no safety. How am I supposed to stop somebody from breaking into my home and killing me and getting away with it?"On September 6, 2018, Guyger fatally shot Jean in his apartment, saying she believed it was her unit, which was one floor below, police said.Guyger was indicted on the murder charge more than two months later. She has pleaded not guilty, and faces up to life in prison if convicted. The shooting sparked days of protests in Dallas and calls for the white officer to be charged. Civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, one of the Jean family attorneys, said the shooting was another example of the threat of violence black people live with.'I thought it was my apartment'Guyger was off duty but still in uniform when she parked her car at the South Side Flats and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to 3056

The observatory atop the Empire State Building has a dizzying new look with floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree windows 102 floors above New York City. The remodeled observatory opens to the public Saturday. It was unveiled to the media Thursday.More than 4 million annual visitors to the 1931 Art Deco skyscraper — about 60% from abroad — will be offered an unobstructed view of the city and far beyond through panoramic floor-to-ceiling sheets of glass. They replace old windows that were half the size. For a nocturnal view of New York, visitors have until 1:15 a.m. to take a new, high-speed, translucent elevator to the 102nd floor. Now visible from the interior on the way up are the building’s tower lights, whose colors change daily to celebrate holidays or people. On the way up to the high new perch are an additional 10,000 square feet (930 sq. meters) of fresh exhibits, including a replica of the moving hand of King Kong, the monster gorilla in the 1933 film that climbs the building, plunging to its death amid an attack by Helldiver military planes. Also on display are photos of actors in movies shot there. The cost to get to the observatory at 1,250 feet (380 meters) above Fifth Avenue has not changed. But now, visitors are promised shorter lines that have often stretched out onto Fifth Avenue, spilling into an elbow-to-elbow lobby crowd before even getting into an elevator. The entrance to the observatories has been switched to the side of the building on West 34th Street, where added security stations help move the crowd along. Tickets may be purchased at electronic kiosks installed only last year, in addition to online purchases. The building also has remodeled its famous open-air observatory on the 86th floor, which still requires a ticket. Walls were opened between the interior space and the open-air terrace so city views emerge immediately after exiting the elevators. The four-year project cost 5 million and was financed by Empire State Realty Trust Inc.Remodeling was a daunting task, said project manager Robert Krizman.Workers mounted metal baskets suspended outside the 103rd floor, wearing harnesses attached to the building. From there, they removed defunct broadcast antennas weighing 200 pounds each, jutting out from the top and bottom of the old windows.Their work station was an aluminum and wood cocoon ringing the 102nd floor for months while the old walls were demolished. 2435
