Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cut a deal with Democratic leaders in the upper chamber to clear a slate of President Donald Trump's nominees, one of the top August priorities for the Kentucky Republican.The deal, which permitted 11 nominees to be cleared immediately and another eight to be voted on next week, also will allow senators who missed most of their August recess to go home for a couple of days before many come back at the end of the week to say farewell to their colleague Sen. But Democrats were able to delay OK'ing some of the nominees at least until next week.Democrats insisted on roll call votes for some of the picks, including Richard Clarida -- to be vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board -- who was confirmed 69-26, and Joseph Hunt -- to be assistant attorney general for the Civil Division of the Department of Justice -- who was confirmed 72-23.The Senate approved several judges by voice votes, a speedier tool when nominees are not considered controversial.One of those judges was Terry Moorer, who was appointed by Trump to be a US district judge in Alabama's Southern District about a year ago.In a statement, Sen. Starbucks has reached gender and race pay equity among all US employees in similar roles, the company said on Wednesday."This milestone is the result of years of work and commitment," said Lucy Helm, executive vice president and chief partner officer at Starbucks, in a statement."We've worked hard for a couple of years now to ensure we can get there," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told CNN's Maggie Lake on Wednesday.The coffee company added that it will now tell American job candidates the pay range for any position in an effort to increase transparency.Helm explained that the company has been striving for pay equity for about decade. Last year, it was at 99.7% parity. Women make up about one-third of the company's executive team.Starbucks uses several tools to make sure bias doesn't impact how much employees make. The company regularly checks for compensation gaps among employees, and uses a calculator to determine starting pay rate targets based on experience. It doesn't ask job candidates about their salary history, and the company analyzes raises to make sure they're fair.It is working with women's organizations like Billie Jean King's Leadership Initiative and the National Partnership for Women & Families to help guide its efforts."One of the most important things to get right is starting pay," said Sara Bowen, the leader of the Starbucks Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility team.Research shows that women, on average, earn around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. The gap is even wider for women of color."If a job candidate comes to Starbucks making 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, and we use that as the basis for her pay at Starbucks, we simply import gender inequality into our own system," she said. "Prior salary can be tainted and should not dictate how we pay."Johnson told Lake that the pay parity achievement is "another example of us taking care of our [employees]."The company also made a commitment to reach gender pay parity at all of its company-owned locations around the world.A number of companies are starting to pay attention to gender wage gaps among their own employees.In a recent survey of human resources executives from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement service firm, 48% of companies say they're reviewing their pay policies with an eye toward closing the compensation gap between male and female employees.Others are making changes already.After disclosing small differences in employee pay earlier this year, Citigroup announced it will give raises to even salaries between men, women and minority employees. Sometimes it takes something physical to overcome an emotional obstacle.For Gabby Hamilton that epiphany happened as she grappled with other girls.“It’s made me who I am,” she said. “You have to fight through frustrating times.”Hamilton is a wrestler at Life University, a private college located just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.She’s participating in one of the fastest growing sports in the country: women’s collegiate wrestling“Back in 1999 there were only three colleges that had women’s wrestling,” said Ashley Sword, Life University women’s wrestling head coach. “Now, there are almost 90 colleges that have women’s wrestling.”Sword is considered a pioneer of the sport. This former Team USA member is now sharing knowledge and helping pave the path for a new generation.“It’s still not completely accepted. It’s still not completely supported,” Sword said of women’s wrestling. “There are people who don’t understand why girls and women would want to wrestle.”Sword’s dedication paid off as Life University recently crowned its first women’s wrestling national champion: Julia Vidallon.“Julia showed that being exactly who you are is enough and I think that’s a great lesson,” Sword said. “It brought this confidence that they can do anything.”That confidence has carried over to other aspects of life.“Wrestling made me love my body actually,” Hamilton said. “It kind of made me more body supportive in how I look at myself.”Hamilton is now entering her sophomore season and believes embracing the grind of wrestling will help her long after she graduates.“There’s no end. there’s no roof,” she said.
