LANATANA, Florida — A man jumped out of bushes and randomly attacked a woman with a chainsaw around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Lantana police said.The woman, who is in her 60s, was walking along Hypoluxo Road near Seacrest Boulevard when the man attacked her, according to police.The woman was taken to a local hospital for with serious injuries to the chest and hands but is expected to survive.Lantana police have the attacker in custody. They identified him as 20-year-old Juan Cabrera Jr."He actually made a comment that he woke up this morning, went and got something to eat. We can't confirm or deny if he's got any kind of mental illness or not. But he did make a comment to the investigator that he saw the lady in the area and he quote stated, 'I'm going to end this woman's life,' " Lantana Police Chief Sean Scheller said.The incident occurred near the Super 8 Motel at 1200 Hypoluxo Blvd., where the suspect was staying.The woman said she did not know the man and thought he was a landscaper, police said. (KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said.The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said.She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. If they think they're getting the sales tax that comes from businesses, they're not going to get as much as they think they're going to get," she said.Councilman Jones was once opposed to a tax increase too, but now he say it's necessary."There are just no other alternatives if we want to stay a city," he said.Supporters have until September 30 to gather 1,489 signatures to qualify for the March 2020 ballot."We think we can" get enough signatures by the deadline, said Yadira Altamirano, one of the proponents of the Lemon Grove Tax Measure. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two women on vacation in San Diego had their trip ruined when thieves stole all of their luggage.Vivia Bradshaw and Yvonne Simpson live in Florida and New York. For the last 15 years, they've made regular trips to San Diego."We’re always coming back, it is so beautiful, we love the weather especially," says Simpson. "Everything's so beautiful. We've never had a terrible experience coming here before."But their trip this past week turn a turn for the worse on Saturday, while they were visiting with a friend in La Mesa.Simpson and Bradshaw say they had put their luggage in their friend's car at the Woodland Terrace Apartments while they visited his home."When we were ready to leave, I came back to the car and saw something a little strange," says Simpson. "I asked him, was that open? And he saw right away that someone had entered the car. I said check the trunk. He did, all our suitcases were gone. Every last piece. Three of them!"Thieves took all of their clothes, money, gift cards, jewelry, shoes, purses and personal items."Everything's gone," says Simpson. "We know they're replaceable, but it's the sentiment."The two women have been able to buy new clothes and necessities. Now they're trying to make the most out of their week-long trip. They've filed a police report as well. La Mesa Police says they hope surveillance footage can help identify a suspect.Meanwhile, Bradshaw and Simpson have a warning for others."Just be careful," says Bradshaw. LAKESIDE (CNS) - A blaze burned roughly a half-acre of vegetation in a remote area north of Lakeside Friday morning before crews were able to get a handle on the flames.The fire was reported around 4:15 a.m. off state Route 67 about a mile north of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road, according to Cal Fire San Diego.Within 10 minutes the blaze had grown to about a half-acre, but crews were able to halt the forward rate of spread by 4:35 a.m., the state agency reported.No structures were threatened and no injuries were immediately reported. 544
