DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns are impacting cities across San Diego, and the seaside village of Del Mar is no different.Alex and William Rhett opened a childrens' book store in Del Mar a year ago."The pandemic killed us as a business, but the community brought us back, and here we are," said Alex.The couple just opened Sandcastle Tales at its new location in the Del Mar Plaza."We feel overwhelmed, excited, happy what else very, very thankful," said Alex.The bookstore and the just-opened School of Rock are part of an effort to attract younger crowds to the plaza, located at 1555 Camino Del Mar"You just can't apply the same old formula that you had before, so you have to get a new mix of tenants, a new synergistic group of people that bring a variety of age groups to the plaza," said Patty Brutten.Patty and Marc Brutten spent roughly forty-million dollars buying the plaza in 2017."The successes have been very few and far between. It's been a long hard road," said Patty.Competition from One Paseo, Flower Hill Promenade, and online retail has made it tough to attract new tenants."I don't think anyone else would have stuck with it like we do just because we live here, we're community members," said Patty.Since the pandemic hit, some businesses have closed their doors. Lorna Jane, an athletic apparel recently closed. Prep Kitchen is closed just up the street, and a newly opened barbershop is no longer operating. But two new restaurants are moving into the plaza. Outdoor concerts on the deck continue to be popular. "We really hope everyone can really rediscover the plaza," said Patty.City leaders say retail and restaurants are struggling, but the most significant hit came when the San Diego County Fair was canceled, and the horse races went on without spectators. "Biggest loss is sales tax from the fairgrounds, and that's close to a million dollars," said Del Mar City Councilman Dave Druker. The city has benefited though from an increase in people at the beach."The beaches have been extremely busy. Instead of 10,000 we're getting closer to 40,000 on a weekend," said Druker.Back at Sandcastle Tales, the owners are grateful for another chance."I feel like one of the best opportunities I have ever had, and we want to give back," said Rhett. DENVER - A Colorado gun store owner who appeared on the reality TV show 'American Guns' on Discovery Channel has been sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for tax fraud and dealing without a license.Richard Wyatt, 54, was sentenced to 78 months on Thursday.Wyatt operated the Gunsmoke gun shop in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He was convicted last year on 10 counts, including not reporting income to the IRS.According to court records, Wyatt surrendered his federal firearms license in 2012 for unspecified violations but continued to sell guns from his store by working with another gun shop that had a license. Prosecutors said Wyatt entered sales from his store into the computer system as "miscellaneous" instead of gun sales and had customers go to the other store to fill out the background check paperwork.The court found that a total of 490 guns were involved in Wyatt's illegal operation, all of which the court ordered forfeited. 938

DENVER -- With Colorado’s rapid growth comes rising housing costs and more congestion on the road from more cars — and that doesn't even cover parking.A single parking garage space recently sold for a record-setting ,000 in downtown Denver. The spot is located right across the street from the Colorado Convention Center. “That was on a flat surface pretty close to the entry point,” said realtor Mark Trenka, who sells parking spots and real estate downtown.For the same price as a brand new Mercedes Benz C-Class, a Lexus LS, or a 5 Series BMW, someone bought 137 square feet of concrete.“They’re real estate transactions. It’s real property,” Trenka said. Trenka has sold nearly 70 parking spaces in Denver over the last few years, ranging from ,000 up to ,000.“We’ve seen a trend up in prices just like the condos,” he said. Denver is still not at a New York City or Chicago price level for buying parking spots, but the Mile High City’s prices are blazing new territory in Colorado. “The average of a parking space in the downtown area is between ,000 and ,000,” Trenka said. And while it’s a one-time cost to own the asphalt, you’re not out of the woods in terms of paying for it. All my friends are really excited; they've been freaking out about it all day, as have I — as I should — and it's just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience," Gitanjali said over a Zoom call Thursday.Gitanjali said she was given the news of her most recent accomplishment by Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador Angelia Jolie. Democrat Cal Cunningham formally conceded on Tuesday to Republican incumbent Thom Tillis in the US Senate race in North Carolina that could help pave the way toward Republicans retaining Senate.The race in North Carolina has not been formally called by the Associated Press as there are an unknown number of provisional and uncured ballots that are left to be counted in North Carolina.Cunningham once held a significant lead in polling, but the last few polls that were released before the election were within the margin of error. Another race Republicans are likely to win is in Alaska, where Sen. Dan Sullivan is expected to maintain his seat.Assuming Tillis and Sullivan win re-election, Republicans will control at least 50 seats in the new US Senate come January. Two remaining seats will be decided in a runoff in Georgia. Democrat Jon Ossoff just barely forced a runoff against Republican David Perdue last week. In a special election, Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Kelly Loeffler will meet after Loeffler held off a Republican challenger to finish in the top 2 of last week's general election.Democrats would need both seats in Georgia to force a 50-50 tie in the US Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris acting as a tie breaker on the Democrats’ behalf.The two Georgia races will likely draw a lot of attention as Democrats will be hopeful to gain the two seats in order to have an easier path to get judicial and administration nominees approved by the Senate.Regardless, Democrats will gain some ground following the 2020 election, netting an additional seat after flipping seats in Colorado and Arizona.
