MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fire burning around Yosemite National Park has been fully contained, according to KGO.The Ferguson Fire burned nearly 97,000 acres and destroyed 10 structures. Fire crews are now in the mop-up and repair phase.The fire spread throughout Mariposa County for more than a month from July 13 through August 19. Millions of Americans are either at home trying to figure out how to pay their mounting bills, or out looking for work while worried about exposure to a deadly virus. The troubling state of society is proving beneficial to one particular group: scammers.“It makes sense that Americans are feeling that kind of economic and financial pressure, it is just really terrible that scammers are taking advantage of that,” said Lucy Baker.Baker is with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a watchdog organization based in Washington D.C that has been tracking COVID-19-related scams since May.In May, it found around 50,000 COVID-19 scams had been reported in the FTC’s database. When it went back to check the numbers last month, reported COVID-19 scams had jumped to over 200,000.“Kind of what was more shocking and right in your face was the number, 140 million,” said Baker. "That is the amount of money that had been lost due to these COVID-19 frauds.”Most of the scams are related to companies or individuals selling fake COVID-19 cures. Some are marketing PPE that is supposed to work better but does not.In one case, people were receiving flyers in the mail that instructed them to go to a URL that was supposed to be for coronavirus relief but instead it was a ploy for a used car business to get potential customers. The car dealership even sent fake checks with the flyers, stating it was money from the CARES Act for a new vehicle.According to U.S. PIRG, most people who’ve been scammed have lost around 0 on average. However, that number doubles to 0 for victims 80 years and older.So, organizations like PIRG, the DOJ and even AARP have put out top tips to avoid falling for a COVID-19 scam.“My biggest tip is to do your homework,” said Baker. "If you receive any kind of communication that seems off, smells fishy, it is too good to be true then it probably is.”Baker’s second tip is to be vigilant."The more you are aware that something like this could happen to you, the more likely you are to be able to stop it,” she explained.Lastly, most organizations recommend if you fall victim to a scam, report it. It is important to report it, regardless of how much money was lost or how embarrassed you may feel, because the more reported cases authorities get, the more information they have on the scams and scammers. Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that it was elevating seven early 20th century all-Black baseball leagues — known collectively as the "Negro leagues" — to "Major League" status.The move recognizes the players in those leagues — who were prevented from playing for National or American League clubs because of racist "color barriers" — as Major League players and formalizes any surviving records or statistics from those leagues.Between the late 19th century through 1947, owners of National and American League clubs mutually agreed not to hire any Black ballplayers. As a result, Black people started their own baseball leagues, filled with teams and players across the country.Jackie Robinson finally broke the MLB's color barrier in 1947, when he began playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Over the next 12 years, MLB teams gradually began integrating their teams with the top Black players, eventually signaling the end of the Negro leagues.The MLB had previously inducted 35 players into the Baseball Hall of Fame. But with Wednesday's decision, MLB officially declared that the level of play in many of the Negro leagues was comparable to its own and bestowed the title of "Major Leaguer" to thousands of Black ballplayers who were not offered the opportunity to play with white players.According to MLB.com, the MLB has granted "Major League" status to the following all-Black leagues: Negro National League (I) (1920-31), the Eastern Colored League (1923-28), the American Negro League (1929), the East-West League (1932), the Negro Southern League (1932), the Negro National League (II) (1933-48) and the Negro American League (1937-48)."All of us who love baseball have long known that the Negro Leagues produced many of our game's best players, innovations and triumphs against a backdrop of injustice," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. MIAMI, Fla. – Norwegian Cruise Line announced Tuesday that it would be keeping its ships docked even longer amid ongoing COVID-19 concerns.The cruise line said it’s extending the suspension of its 2020 cruises to include all sailing through August 31, all sailing in September except Seattle-based Alaska Cruises, and select October sailing.The select October cruises include two trips to Alaska, as well as two trips to Canada and New England.The company is offering guests who had an active reservation on a suspended cruise a refund of their cruise fare in the form of a future cruise credit (FCC) for 125% of the amount paid to date on June 25.The FCC must be used one year from the date issued for any Norwegian Cruise Line voyage embarking through 2022, according to the company.Norwegian says guests who prefer to not take advantage of an FCC can elect to receive a lesser refund equal to the amount paid to date to the original form of payment 90 days after form submission for sailings originally scheduled to embark anytime from July 1 onward.For suspended cruises that were set to embark between July 1 and July 31, this form must be submitted not later than 11:59 p.m. ET on June 19, 2020. For later cruises, a refund form will go live at 9 a.m. ET on July 6 and it must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on July 17. 1343

McDonald's is sweetening up its breakfast menu by adding three new items.The fast-food chain announced Wednesday that beginning Oct. 28, consumers will be able to order blueberry muffins, cinnamon rolls, and apple fritters from its menu.McDonald's said the new items would be available all day.For the first time in eight years, the sweet treats are the first addition of bakery items to the chain's core menu, joining cookies and pies."McDonald's has been famous for our savory breakfast menu for almost fifty years," said Linda VanGosen, Vice President, Brand and Menu Strategy, McDonald's USA in the news release.
