RIYADH, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Saudi Arabia's King and Prime Minister Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz agreed on Sunday to make concerted efforts to enhance bilateral relations under a strategic framework.In their meeting, Premier Wen said Saudi Arabia is a major country in the Arab and Islamic world, which plays a significant role in regional and international affairs.He said China respects Saudi Arabia's political system, development mode as well as its culture and traditions, and is grateful for Saudi Arabia's understanding of and support for China regarding the latter's core interests and major concerns.As the world is undergoing profound changes, China is willing to strengthen coordination with Saudi Arabia on major issues, develop an all-around cooperative partnership in the energy sector, expand cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, high-tech, finance, security and law enforcement, so as to enrich the contents of the bilateral relations, he added.King Abdullah said that the government and people of Saudi Arabia cherish friendly feelings for China, and that he believes the strengthening of bilateral cooperation will benefit peoples of both countries.The Saudi king proposed setting up a Saudi Arabia-China high level committee to supervise the two countries' cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and security sectors. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Apple has unveiled a worldwide replacement program for the first-generation iPod nano music player due to overheating battery issues, telling owners to stop using the product and get it replaced for free."Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006," said Apple in a notice posted late Friday on the support section of its official website.The company said the issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. Since the product is five or six years old now, the likelihood of an incident increases.Owners of iPod nano can check the serial number on the back of the product to see if it is eligible for replacement. Apple promises a replacement unit about six weeks after the company received the affected one.The overheating battery issues of the first generation iPod nano have been known for years. In 2008, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry launched an investigation into Apple after dozens of iPod overheating cases were reported, including several incidents of iPod nanos toasting to the point of catching fire and causing minor burns to owners.Last August, a commuter train in Tokyo was delayed during rush hour when passengers complained of a strong burning smell from an overheating iPod nano that had burst apart.The portable music player also cost Apple a 22.5 million-U.S. dollar settlement in 2009 when a class action lawsuit in California alleged iPod nano is prone to scratches and its alleged defects were not disclosed by the company.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists in Canada have raised a prospect of reversing Alzheimer's disease by deep brain stimulation, according to media reports Monday.The technique here is known as deep brain stimulation -- applying electricity directly to regions of the brain. It has been used in tens of thousands of patients with Parkinson's as well as having an emerging role in Tourette's Syndrome and depression.The study at the University of Toronto took six patients with the condition. Deep brain stimulation was applied to the fornix -- a part of the brain which passes messages onto the hippocampus.Lead researcher Prof Andres Lozano said you would expect the hippocampus to shrink by five per cent on average in a year in patients with Alzheimer's.After 12 months of stimulation, he said one patient had a five per cent increase and another had an eight per cent increase.Prof Lozano told BBC: "This is the first time that brain stimulation in a human being has been shown to grow an area of your brain.""It was an amazing finding for us," he said.The findings were presented at the Society for Neuroscience conference in November but they have yet to be published in an academic journal.To test whether this is really working, rather than being a fluke result, the researchers are going to perform a larger trial.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China will regulate the production and sale of cosmetic colored contact lenses by including them in its list of items classified as "medical apparatus."Some people wear such non-corrective colored contacts to change or enhance eye color for cosmetic and fashion purposes.As these contacts are not for vision correction and medication purposes, they are currently off limits to the country's medical administration and regulators, said a statement published on the website of the State Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.However, with the increasingly popular use of cosmetic contacts, safety and quality problems due to the regulation loophole are likely to harm consumers' health, and the administration has decided to expand the current medical regulation on contact lenses to cover cosmetic ones, the statement said.It explained that the administration will soon issue a notice to ban the manufacture and sale of these contacts without proper registration and licenses.The statement also warned consumers of the risks of these contacts and suggested they carefully choose and use such products.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) Friday launched a probe into certain products from China after several U.S. companies alleged their patents were infringed.The products in question include televisions and Blu-ray players produced by Haier Group of China and Vizio Inc. under Taiwan-based Amtran Technology Company and sold in the U.S. market, the USITC said.` Five U.S. technology companies filed a complaint with USITC last month, saying those products violated Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 by infringing their patents.Meanwhile, they requested the USITC issue an exclusion order and a cease and desist order against those products from China.The trade panel is scheduled to set a target date for completing the investigation within 45 days after institution of the probe. If the complaint is approved, the agency will ban importation of those products.The U.S. move came at a time when protectionism is making a comeback in the United States amid sluggish economic recovery.It is widely believed that such actions would only hurt U.S.- China trade relations that are increasingly critical to global economic recovery.
