SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue, killing a woman and injuring three other people, pleaded not guilty today to more than 100 federal hate crime charges alleging he acted out of hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities.John T. Earnest, 19, is accused not only of the synagogue shooting but also of an earlier arson fire at an Escondido mosque. He is being charged by both federal and state prosecutors and faces a possible death sentence in both cases. Neither office has made a decision regarding whether they will pursue the death penalty.Earnest, of Rancho Penasquitos, is accused of carrying out the shooting at Chabad of Poway on April 27 -- the last day of Passover -- killing Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who was shot twice in the synagogue's foyer and died at a hospital.The congregation's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, 57, lost an index finger in the shooting. Two other people -- Almog Peretz, 34, and his 8-year-old niece, Noya Dahan -- were also injured.Earnest is also accused of setting a March 24 fire at an Escondido mosque -- a crime to which Earnest allegedly confessed in an online manifesto he posted prior to the synagogue shooting.Following his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, he's slated to return to court May 28 for a preliminary hearing. He remains held without bail.He was charged last Thursday with 109 federal hate crimes: -- 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs using a dangerous weapon, resulting in death, bodily injury and attempts to kill; -- 54 counts of hate crimes stemming from the synagogue shooting in violation of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; and -- one count of damage to religious property by use of fire.Each of the 54 hate crime and obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs counts apply to a person who was inside the synagogue during the shooting, Brewer said. Among those people, 12 of the congregants present were children, he said.Earnest is due back in federal court May 28.Earnest is also charged in state court with murder, attempted murder and arson. His next court hearing in the state's case is a readiness conference set for May 30.Kaye, a longtime member of Chabad of Poway, was at the temple with her physician husband and daughter the day of the shooting to honor her mother, who recently died. The rabbi, Goldstein, lost his right index finger in the shooting. Peretz was shot in a leg while shepherding children to safety. His niece was struck by shrapnel in her face and leg.An off-duty Border Patrol agent working as a security guard was inside the temple when the shooting began, and he opened fire as the suspect fled, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said. The agent did not strike Earnest, but did hit the suspect's car, authorities said.Police said Earnest called 911 at around 11:30 a.m. and said he had been involved in the shooting and was armed.According to the federal complaint, Earnest told a dispatcher, ``I just shot up a synagogue. I'm just trying to defend my nation from the Jewish people ... They're destroying our people ... I opened fire at a synagogue. I think I killed some people.'' He allegedly added that he shot up the synagogue ``because the Jewish people are destroying the white race.''A San Diego police officer who had been en route to the synagogue spotted the suspect's vehicle and pulled him over at 17051 W. Bernardo Drive, less than two miles west of the synagogue, Deputy District Attorney Leonard Trinh said.Earnest got out of his vehicle with his hands up and was taken into custody without further incident, according to police.In the ``open letter'' that authorities say Earnest posted online shortly before the shooting, the author espouses flagrant anti-Semitic sentiments and a need to protect the ``European race.'' He wrote that he spent four weeks planning the attack, citing his ``disgust'' for Jews and a desire to kill them, and expressed admiration for the Australian white nationalist who attacked two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March, killing 50 people.The writer also claims responsibility for the March 24 fire set at the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque, also known as Islamic Center of Escondido. The 3:15 a.m. fire was quickly extinguished by people inside the mosque. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A newly formed steering committee is working to drastically reduce the number of hepatitis C cases in San Diego County, it was announced Monday. The county's Health and Human Services Agency and the American Liver Foundation-Pacific Coast Division oversee the Eliminate Hepatitis C San Diego County Initiative steering committee, which also includes members of the public and private medical communities. The aim is to reduce new hepatitis C infections in the county by 80 percent and deaths by 65 percent by 2030. ``By joining forces and strengthening our local efforts, we expect to eliminate this curable disease as a public health threat and improve longevity and quality of life for people living with hepatitis C,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 3 1/2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C. The county reported 3,112 new hepatitis C cases in 2017. Most complications from the infection develop over the course of two to three decades, but acute hepatitis C infections can develop within six months after exposure. ``Most people with hepatitis C might not be aware of their infection because they do not feel ill,'' said ALF-Pacific Coast Division Executive Director Scott Suckow. Hepatitis C is generally transmitted through exposure to blood, especially among people who inject drugs and share needles. The infection can also be spread via sexual transmission, but it isn't as common as blood exposure. CDC officials recommend that people born between 1945 and 1965, current and former injection drug users, people with known exposures to hepatitis C and recipients of blood transfusions and solid organ transplants prior to July 1992 get tested for the infection. The steering committee, which met for the first time last week, plans to present its plan to reduce hepatitis C contractions and deaths to the Board of Supervisors by the end of next year. County health officials have already suggested that the expansion of testing and treatment access should be a priority for the county going forward. ``There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but there's a cure, so we'll be working with our public and private partners to try to put an end to the virus in San Diego County,'' Wooten said. 2333

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Latinas are bearing a disproportionately high burden from the COVID-19 pandemic in San Diego County, a local nonprofit and Latina elected officials said today as they shared data from the San Diego Association of Governments.According to Latina-focused nonprofit MANA de San Diego, this comes as Latino households already had lower pre-pandemic wages, less access to health care and job-related benefits. Latinas in particular have faced increased job losses and threats of economic insecurity, they said.Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas, a member of SANDAG's Board of Directors, shared that while Latinas comprise around 17% of the county's population, around 60% of that population is working in the three industries most impacted by job loss during the pandemic -- tourism, retail and education. Latinas account for 14% of total county employment, but 20% of employment in those sectors.Data from SANDAG paints a bleak picture in regard to Latinas during the pandemic. When compared to the white population, Hispanic populations are almost three times as likely to live in areas that have been highly impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. Additionally, Hispanic residents account for a significant portion of essential workers, and many became unemployed due to temporary business closures as a result of COVID-19.A total of 70% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with above average unemployment, 49% in ZIP codes with above average COVID-19 cases and 42% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with both above average.More than 100,000 San Diegans have tested positive for the virus, and 57% of those have been Hispanic or Latino.``As the pandemic grows in severity and stay-at-home orders are strengthened, it is the county's Latina population that will continue to face a disproportionate amount of risk and negative impacts,'' a statement from MANA de San Diego said.A Harvard, NPR and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study also found 46% of Latino households have used up ``most or all'' of their savings during the pandemic, with an additional 15% reporting they had no savings before COVID-19 hit the United States.The same study found 66% of Latino households with children report serious problems caring for their children, including 36% who report serious problems keeping their children's education going.``MANA de San Diego will continue to do our part in creating upward social mobility for Latinas,'' said Inez Gonzalez Perezchia, MANA de San Diego's executive director. ``We will work with our elected officials joining us today and we welcome allies to join us as well. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An order barring the federal government from deporting recently reunited parents and children who were separated at the border due to the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration will remain in effect until further notice, a San Diego judge overseeing the case said Wednesday.U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw, considering a request for a temporary restraining order in a case transferred from the District of Columbia, said an order he issued three weeks ago prohibiting the government from removing reunified families from the United States before they've had a chance to discuss their immigration status is still in effect for both cases.The plaintiffs in the case of M.M.M. v. Sessions got assurances from the judge that the order halting deportations applies to both parents and their children who may be seeking asylum hearings."We're asking to maintain the status quo," an attorney on the case told the judge.In June, the American Civil Liberties Union won a nationwide injunction in its class-action lawsuit requiring reunification of children separated from their parents at the border.Last week, Sabraw ordered the federal government to come up with a plan to find parents who have been deported or released back into the United States. He said it was "unacceptable" that the government had located only a few parents out of close to 500 who have been removed from the United States or released into the mainland.Sabraw ordered the government to put one person in charge of the effort to find parents who were separated from their children.The ACLU said it needs more information from the government on the whereabouts of parents who have been removed from the United States and sent mainly to Honduras and Guatemala.A status conference on the San Diego case is set for Friday at 1 p.m. 1849

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of carrying out a series of credit union heists in San Diego County, stealing more than ,000 over a three-month span, pleaded not guilty Friday to 10 felony counts, including robbery and attempted robbery.Karl Doron, 43, was arrested Tuesday after he entered the Navy Federal Credit Union, 6755 Mira Mesa Blvd., and allegedly demanded cash from the employees, according to FBI Special Agent Davene Butler.Police officers and FBI agents had been monitoring Doron based on information they had gathered in an investigation that began in late December, when the first robbery occurred, Butler said.Upon leaving the credit union, he was taken into custody without incident and found to be carrying a loaded handgun, the agent said.RELATED: FBI searching for 'Gloved Robber' in series of credit union heistsDeputy District Attorney Andy Aguilar said Doron, whose alleged spree started three days after Christmas, used gloves, glasses, coats and other clothing to mask his identity. He would pass notes to the tellers asking for cash, and was successful on all but two occasions, the prosecutor alleged.Investigators have recovered ,000 Doron allegedly took in his last heist, but ,500 remains outstanding, he said.The defendant faces 14 years and four months in prison if convicted of all counts.Doron's attorney, Deanna L. Lopas, emphasized that none of the holdups her client is alleged to have committed involved violence or threats, simply the passing of a note.She also noted that he has no prior criminal record and holds a doctorate in neuroscience.
