Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who served as sheriff of Arizona's Maricopa County’s from 1993 to 2017, filed a libel lawsuit against The New York Times and a member of its editorial board Tuesday evening. Court documents obtained by show Arpaio is suing The Times and Michelle Cottle for the publication of Cottle’s August 2018 op-ed titled, “Well, at Least Sheriff Joe Isn’t Going to Congress - Arpaio’s loss in Arizona’s Senate Republican primary is a fitting end to the public life of a truly sadistic man.” In the opinion piece, Cottle calls Arpaio’s “24-year reign of terror” “medieval in its brutality,” and makes reference to the former Sheriff’s controversial practices, which include the creation of Tent City, the implementation of chain gangs, and forcing prisoners to wear pink underwear. The Times published Cottle’s op-ed after Arpaio was defeated by Martha McSally in the primary race for Jeff Flake's Senate seat.In the complaint, filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Arpaio’s team noted,  “While the Defamatory Article is strategically titled as an opinion piece, it contains several false, defamatory factual assertions concerning Plaintiff Arpaio.”A complaint within the lawsuit states Arpaio plans to run for Senate in 2020. The publication of Cottle's op-ed may prevent a successful run for Arpaio, according to court documents. "Plaintiff Arpaio’s chances and prospects of election to the U.S. Senate in 2020 have been severely harmed by the publication of false and fraudulent facts in the Defamatory Article," the lawsuit notes. "This also harms Plaintiff financially, as his chances of obtaining funding from the Republican establishment and donors for the 2020 election have been damaged by the publication of false and fraudulent representations in the Defamatory Article."Arpaio is seeking 7,500,000 in damages, as well as attorneys’ fees and costs. Florida is once again in the crosshairs of Tropical Storm Eta as the slow-moving system meanders its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.On Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortugas, and a tropical storm watches for parts of Florida's west coast, including the Tampa area.The storm has top sustained winds of 60 mph and has been drifting off the northwest coast of Cuba since early Monday after Eta went over the Florida Keys. The tropical storm’s outer bands have been raking the Florida peninsula for days.As it turns more toward the north, Eta is forecast to remain a tropical storm until Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Eta’s forecast cone does not bring the center of it over land until then, but its outer rain bands are expected to dump heavy rain in parts of Florida that could lead to flooding.Eta was the 12th named system to strike the US this hurricane season, setting a record. This hurricane season set a new record on Monday for most named systems with 29 after the formation of Theta in the eastern Atlantic.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. Theta is the seventh storm this season named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. The only other time the Greek alphabet has been used was in 2005.Eta previously struck Central America as a powerful Category 4 hurricane last week.The Atlantic hurricane season still has another three weeks to go, and it’s not unheard of for a system to develop in December if conditions are favorable, like they have been for much of 2020. 1602

Former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops is helping coach the Sooners again because of coronavirus issues. The Sooners had to postpone last Saturday's game against West Virginia and temporarily paused organized team activities due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing throughout the program. The situation affected the assistant coaching ranks, leading Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley to ask Stoops for help. “It was great,” Riley said during a press conference with media members. “It’s nice. It’s been kind of in our hip pocket this whole time. If we had any staff member that fell off, we’ve got a Hall of Famer sitting on the bench. So that’s a pretty good bench when you can call that guy up.” 714
