DETROIT, Mich. -- The Detroit Police Department is responding to a video that shows an officer fatally shooting a dog in its own yard.Officers say it happened Aug. 3 on the east side of the Michigan city.The video shows the dog in a yard latching onto a police K-9's snout and not letting go. The officer then drew her weapon and shot the dog, which died from its injuries."It's unfortunate that it came to this. We do not like to see any animal hurt, especially these K-9 officers. They are truly dog lovers and champions for K-9s. But at this point, her dog was being severely injured and had no choice," Commander Darin Szilagy said.Detroit police did internally investigate and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.That K-9 officer continues to be evaluated and treated for injuries. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Deputies are searching for a driver who recently hit a 39-year-old man in a Del Mar alley and sped off. The victim was walking southbound in an alley between 10th and 11th Streets at about 2 a.m. on Nov. 9, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. An unknown vehicle driving northbound in the alley struck the victim without stopping to check on him, and left the scene.RELATED: Man left for dead in Del Mar alley after hit-and-runThe victim suffered several injuries, including a broken pelvis, tibia, fibula, and femur, and several cuts to his body and head. The man is expected to survive his injuries, but is still hospitalized.Investigators believe the vehicle involved was a light-colored, compact SUV. DETROIT — After plate umpire Quinn Wolcott was struck in the shoulder by a fastball from a Detroit Tigers pitcher during a baseball game this week, Major League Baseball is reviewing the incident.The pitch from Buck Farmer went past the mitt of backup catcher John Hicks when it hit Wolcott in the game against the Cleveland Indians, the Associated Press reports. Two batters prior, the ump had ejected another catcher and manager Brad Ausmus after a close pitch to Cleveland's Jay Bruce.The MLB is looking into circumstances around the strike. DENVER — The deaf community in Colorado has an unusual problem with marijuana.How do you sign "endocannabinoid"?In Dank's Denver dispensary, budtenders are ready to help. But for some, placing an order is more complicated.Larry Littleton is deaf and a certified interpreter, demonstrating the difficulties as he wrote out an order for the person behind the counter."I believe that it's important for a patient to be empowered and when we don't have communication access," said Littleton.Even among other deaf people, American Sign Language isn't up to speed on weed. That's where a Boulder nonprofit, ECS Therapy Center, is stepping in to help create new cannabis-related vocabulary of signs for the deaf community.Regina Nelson is bringing together interpreters and deaf professionals to compile a video glossary."If this is the best sign for marijuana," she said, showing a sign that looks like holding a joint to her mouth, "it's really not appropriate to cannabis and cannabis oil and these other things."Nelson hopes to finish the glossary next year and as it goes into informal use, she says she hopes to eventually petition the Sign Language Academy to add it to the official lexicon.  "As a social scientist, language is what normalizes things and so to help empower the deaf community to develop language around this is what will help normalize medical cannabis use," she said.The group of volunteers is touring grows and dispensaries this week to learn about the industry and hoping to make it more ADA friendly.
