SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders are asking the state to provide guidance on how the city can reopen the convention center safely during the pandemic.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Chris Cate signed on to the letter requesting that Gov. Gavin Newsom provide rules to reopen the convention center, which has been shuttered since March.According to the city, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the convention center has lost out on more than 100 events between March and December of this year. That factors out to a loss of about 7.8 million in direct attendee spending and .2 billion regional impact.Cate says guidelines to safely reopen convention centers have been awaiting Newsom's approval since June, and must be approved by November in order to host events in 2021 — many events that are already in jeopardy."We are respectfully requesting that the Governor approves the Safe Reopening Guidelines for convention centers statewide. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents in one City Heights neighborhood say they're upset their streets have become a constant "demolition derby."In the Ring video, a loud crashing sound is heard at night, before a frantic Yesenia Zepeda goes outside her home in late April. A hit-and run driver struck her girlfriend's car parked on Dwight Street near 47th Street. It is the second time her girlfriend's car has been struck outside the home in a 4-month period. "It's ridiculous and it's dangerous," said Zepeda. Last week, that danger played out again on her Ring camera, as a car collided with an SUV carrying a mother and a one-month-old baby, who appeared to be okay. "It was heartbreaking to see," said Zepeda. Zepeda fears more heartbreak may be just around the corner. "I hear screeching all the time," said Zepeda. She and other neighbors say crashes and close calls are a constant. "You really can't see anything at night," said Zepeda. Zepenia points to the dark street, speeding cars, a sharp turn, and one very narrow street. Other videos show just how tight that squeeze is. Sometimes, two-way traffic is not possible. Zepeda has contacted city officials, asking for streetlights, signage to help slow speeds, and turning a section of 47th Street into a one-way street. A city spokesperson issued the following statement: “In April 2017, a 24 hour traffic study was conducted and the data concluded that this location does not qualify for traffic calming measures. Flu season generally runs from October through May, with flu activity peaking in December and February.The county says it's "very likely" physical distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing are contributing to the low flu activity."Influenza activity remains very low to date this season in San Diego County. This is very likely due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19," the county's influenza report said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are looking for more possible victims of a Balboa Park street performer suspected of multiple sexual assaults. Luis Martinez-Haaz, 22, was arrested May 3 in relation to several open cases from April, officers said.Police said Martinez-Haaz worked as a street performer and dancer in Balboa Park, and would often approach women after his shows. He convinced them to walk to isolated areas where he would sexually assault them, investigators said. San Diego Police Sex Crimes Unit detectives are searching for any additional victims or people with information related to the cases. Martinez-Haaz is 5’7” and 145 pounds with short brown wavy hair.
