UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. "We will continue to work with the international community to contribute to the peace, stability and development in Sudan."

WUHAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday that Premier Wen Jiabao's imminent visit to Russia and the 15th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers would further promote the bilateral relationship.Yang made the remarks while meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the 10th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russia and India in central China's Wuhan city.However, Yang did not give a specific date for the prime ministers' meeting in Russia.During his meeting with Lavrov, Yang praised progress of the development of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination this year. CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The outcome of the UN climate change conference in Cancun sent "positive" signals to the international community, the Chinese delegation said Saturday.Conference delegates finally reached a deal to fight global warming early Saturday after an all-night session, overruling an objection from Bolivia."As for the outcome of this conference, first of all, it adheres to the (UN) Convention (on climate change), the Kyoto Protocol and the Bali Roadmap, as well as the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, which ensures that next year's negotiation will continue along the two tracks decided by the Bali Roadmap," the Chinese delegation said in a statement."Second, progress has been made at different levels in the areas where developing countries have concerns, such as adaptation, technology transfer, finance and capacity building, and the negotiation process will move on, which sends positive signals to the international community," the delegation said.It said the conference failed to conclude the negotiation of the Bali Roadmap and this indicated next year's negotiation task would be "extremely difficult."The delegation expected all parties to display strong political will and conclude the negotiation on the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol at the next conference, to be held in Durban, South Africa. MANILA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A cargo ship with 24 Chinese crew aboard sank off the waters of the Philippines' Batanes province on Friday afternoon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Saturday.Quoting a report from the Batanes provincial police office, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz said Saturday the Panama cargo vessel MV Hong Wei met the incident about 120 nautical miles (222 kilometers) off Itbayat island around 3:22 p.m. Friday.Cruz could not immediately say what caused the vessel to sink or the vessel's destination.A passing vessel, MV Shun Tong, and a ship from China's Taiwan region's coast guard rescued 12 crew and two passengers, respectively, said Cruz, adding that at least three ships from Taiwan region's coast guard are currently at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations for the 10 still missing crew members.A rescue vessel from the Chinese mainland is expected to arrive at the site anytime Saturday to join the search and rescue operations, said Cruz.Wang Ben, police attache of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines, told Xinhua that the embassy has confirmed the incident with China's Ministry of Transport.
