YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday.Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters.The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped.An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of passengers traveling on China's railway set a new daily record on Oct.1 driven by holiday makers and improved rail transport capacity, railway authorities said Saturday.Daily railway passenger traffic on Friday hit 8.3 million riders, up 19.8 percent year on year and overtaking the daily record of 7.1 million set on May 1 during the Labor Day holiday, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Friday's figure also outnumbered the previous day by 1.8 million, the MOR said.Over the past four days more than 24 million people in China chose to travel by train, which is 10.3 percent higher than the figure during the same period last year, said the ministry.Thanks to China's increased transport capacity, stemming partially from high-speed railway construction, railway authorities managed to meet the travel demands of holiday makers, which are dominated by travelers and those who were returning home.China's weeklong National Day holiday begins on Friday.China has 7,055 kilometers of high-speed railway in service, which is the world's longest, said He Huawu, chief engineer of the MOR.By 2012, China will have a railway network of 110,000 kilometers, 13,000 kilometers of which will be high-speed rail, according to the MOR.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has kept a "generally stable" coal mine safety record in the first nine months of 2010, as the death toll caused by accidents remained almost flat over the same period last year, Zhao Tiechui, head of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (SACMS), said here Monday.From January to September, the nation's coal output reached 2.44 billion tonnes, up 17.2 percent, but accidents dropped 13.2 percent year on year, Zhao said.He did not give any actual numbers of coal mine accidents or deaths caused during period, but said the death ratio per million tons of coal output stood at 0.783 percent, down 13.9 percent over the same period last year.According to the SACMS's last publicized figures, deaths from coal mine accidents totaled 3,215 in China in 2008. In the January-September period of 2009, China recorded 591 fewer deaths from coal mine accidents, down by 23.8 percent from the 2008 level.Gas explosions, floods and fires inside coal mines were frequent occurrences during the first nine months, posing severe safety challenges to China's coal mine production, Zhao said.In a separate report by the State Administration of Work Safety in July this year, workplace accidents left 33,876 people dead in China during the first half of the year.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. MOSCOW, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Donald Tsang Yan-Kuen voiced their support here on Tuesday for the development of more direct links between Russia and Hong Kong.Tsang arrived in Moscow by the first ever direct commercial flight run by a Hong Kong airline.Tsang noted that after the lifting of visa restrictions in July 2009, two-way travels between Russia and Hong Kong rose by 100 percent."I am certain this flow will be increasing further," he was quoted as saying by local news agencies."The updating of the relevant listing rules in June this year would facilitate the listing of (Russian) mining and resource companies in Hong Kong," said Tsang.He also encouraged Russian companies to issue RMB bonds in Hong Kong, and welcomed Russian banks to set up branches in Hong Kong and make use of the RMB clearing and settlement system.Tsang was accompanied by 30 Hong Kong businessmen who were interested in cooperation with Russia."I hope that your meeting here in Moscow, including with members of the business community, will be useful," said Medvedev.The Russian president also invited Tsang to discuss the further advancement of bilateral cooperation as well as some key international issues.
