SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native is back home after the Camp Fire forced him out of his school. Angel Gonzalez is a third-year student at Chico State University. Campus officials canceled class on Thursday when the fire broke out and then announced the campus would be closed for two weeks. The university is not currently threatened by the Camp Fire but the air quality is poor. Gonzalez says leaving the campus was chaotic and crowded with everyone trying to get out. He’s now worried about his professors, many who own properties in Paradise.Classes at Chico State are set to resume on November 26th, the Monday after Thanksgiving.   680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two weeks ago, the county warned San Diegans to continue practicing social distancing, washing of hands, and wearing facial coverings over the Labor Day weekend to thwart the spread of COVID-19.County public health officials had been clear that they did not want to see the same case spikes that followed July 4th and Memorial Day.Now that Labor Day has passed, local doctors say they have yet to see the same spike in coronavirus cases seen after holidays earlier this summer."We have not seen a sustained rate of 30, 40, 60 positives like we did around July 4. We're not seeing it yet," said Dr. David Pride, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego.Pride says the difference may be due to residents being more educated about the virus and how to best slow the spread. For the other two holidays, schools were also still closed.According to the county, 10 days after July 4 the region's positivity rate was 6.3%. Currently, the county's positivity rate is 4.4%."We're 10 days out, no big jump so far, our positivity rates suggest that something is different this time and hopefully that will continue for a week or two," Pride said.While San Diego County's positivity rate is low, it's the region's case rate (cases per 100,000 residents) that continues to be an issue. And now, it's the county's case rate that threatens to push the region's into a stricter reopening tier."This time around they're not sitting home, they're not socially distancing, so we're gonna see spikes that are largely unrelated to the Labor Day weekend," says Pride.And with more fall holidays approaching, Pride says residents will need to continue their vigilance through the holidays as spikes in cases are more likely. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber announced Wednesday that the ride sharing company has chosen San Diego to be part of the new Uber Rewards program.The program lets users earn points every time they use Uber or Uber Eats, and the loyalty program has four membership levels: Blue, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.Once customers sign up, they’ll begin to earn points. Users will earn one point for every eligible dollar spent on UberPool and Uber Eats, two points for UberX, UberXL, Select and WAV and three points for Black and Black SUV.Once you earn 500 points within six months, you’ll advance from Blue to Gold. At 2,500 points you’ll advance to Platinum.
