A Ukrainian passenger jet carrying 176 people crashed just minutes after taking off from the Iranian capital's main airport, turning farmland on the outskirts of Tehran into fields of flaming debris and killing all on board. The crash of Ukraine International Airlines came hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Iraqi bases housing U.S. soldiers. Iranian officials said they suspected a mechanical issue brought down the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The Ukrainian Embassy initially said they did not believe the crash was terror related, but later pulled that statement. "Information on the causes of the plane crash is being clarified by the commission," the embassy said, according to CNN. Among those killed in the crash were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians were killed in the crash, according to CNN. Ukraine's foreign minister says Swedish, Afghan, British and German nationals were also among those killed. Canadian Foreign Minister Fran?ois-Philippe Champagne says he's been in touch with the government of Ukraine since the crash. He called it tragic news and said Wednesday that Canada's "hearts are with the loved ones of the victims, including many Canadians." CNN reports that Iran will not hand over the black boxes containing flight information over to the United States or to Boeing. Iran says it has no obligation to provide the information to the U.S. under international aviation law.Commercial airlines are rerouting flights crossing the Middle East to avoid possible danger amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Australian carrier Qantas says it's altering its London to Perth, Australia, routes to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice. Malaysia Airlines says that “due to recent events,” its planes would avoid Iranian airspace. Singapore Airlines also says its flights to Europe would avoid Iran. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has barred American pilots and carriers from flying in areas of Iraqi, Iranian and some Persian Gulf airspace. Analysts say that changed flight plans are expected to inconvenience as many as 15,000 passengers per day and lengthen flight times by an average of 30 to 90 minutes. 2218

BOWIE, Md. -- Nestled away on a college campus sits a student lounge unlike any found at a typical college. “You're thinking someplace you can relax, you know, some place you can kind of just let your hair down for a moment,” said Christina Becton, a nursing student at Bowie State University in Maryland. On more than one occasion she’s found herself hungry and headed to the university’s new “nutritional lounge.” It’s a place where students can come and get food they can’t afford. “There is certainly a financial constraint being in college,” Becton said. Inside, there’s comfy seating, a flat screen TV and a jar for “suggestions” of food students would like to see featured on the shelves. Yet, the words “food pantry” are nowhere to be found there, for one main reason. “There is a stigma and we want the students to know that we're here to support them. We want to make sure that you know they don't feel this any sense of shame,” said Dr. Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State, Maryland’s first Historically Black College and University.She said most of their 6,100 students are commuter students. A baby male giraffe was born last week at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay!The park says Bea, a 14-year old reticulated giraffe, delivered her third calf on June 19. The Busch Gardens zoological team has been monitoring Bea and her male calf as they continue to bond behind the scenes at the park. Refoundry helps give formerly incarcerated people a second chance. Now they’re giving back in a special way, helping protect people behind bars during the pandemic.Refoundry's mission is giving people a second chance by providing skills and opportunity. The nonprofit, created by Cisco Pinedo and Tommy Safian, trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings. Their program is structured into three stages over the period, starting off with placement in a living wage job ending with mentorship that could lead to business ownership.So far, 10 businesses have started with the help of Refoundry, giving jobs to more than 125 people.Back in 2016, Scripps station WPIX in New York visited Refoundry in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now, they’re adding another effort to their outreach as a result of the pandemic and putting the Refoundry onsite program on hiatus during the lockdown."We launched something called ‘Makers Make Masks,’ that enlists formerly incarcerated people that are homebound because of the pandemic to help combat a public health crisis by sewing reusable washable masks for the most vulnerable people in our society the incarcerated and the homeless," explained Safian.The masks are being donated to homeless support services in Los Angeles and at Rikers Island in New York, where more than 850 masks have already been delivered.The Refoundry set up 20 formerly incarcerated workers with sewing machines, pre-cut fabrics, technical support and training with the help of grants and donations.“This allows… people with the opportunity to demonstrate their value,” explained Safian “to themselves and to their community and to society ... it really does mean a lot."Once the pandemic is over, Refoundry plans on launching a second location Los Angeles and moving into a new space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
