SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Communications Office reminded residents Thursday that they have access to nearly 55,000 e-books and audiobooks for free via the county library system.County residents can download digital titles to their tablet or e-reader by downloading the Libby app and linking it with their library account.Residents can also use the library's Overdrive program to download digital titles and collections.E-books and audiobooks can be checked out for seven, 14 or 21 days. At the end of the check-out period, the title will return to the library's collection, eliminating late fees and the possibility of physical damage to the title.According to the county library, digital checkouts in 2018 have increased by roughly 50 percent to more than 1.5 million compared to 2017. The county library system is one of 30 in the world to surpass 1.5 million digital checkouts."The Library encourages reading in every way -- to develop skills, create opportunities and motivate a love of reading,'' said Migell Acosta, the county's library director. "To meet the community's steadily increasing interest in audiobooks and e-books, we have made significant investments into our digital collections, and we look forward to adding many new titles in 2019.''The library's digital collection also includes more than 150 magazines along with its collection of e-books, according to the county. (AP) — Scientists say they have found an elusive chameleon species that was last spotted in Madagascar 100 years ago.Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday they've discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.A team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.“These animals are basically the mayflies among vertebrates,” said Frank Glaw, curator for reptiles and amphibians at the ZSM, told the AP.Researchers believe that both reptiles only live during the rainy season. They hatch from eggs, grow rapidly, spar with rivals, mate, and then die during a few short months."The assumed short life might also partly explain why this splendid species got 'lost' for many decades, since most roads in its habitat are not accessible in the wet season," researchers wrote in a report in the journal Salamandra. 1019

 Another Rikers Island correction officer has been attacked on the job by an inmate. The Department of Correction’s union says it’s the fourth such attack in just six weeks.The union is calling on city officials to make changes immediately to protect the officers.The 25-year-old officer is recovering from a broken nose and first- and third-degree burns after he was attacked during his shift on Saturday night, officials said.“One inmate sucker-punched him from the side and took the hot water and threw it on him,” said Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.J’von Johnson, 21, is facing felony assault charges for his alleged role in the attack.“Outrageous attacks like this, on an officer just doing his job helping keep the rest of us safe, are exactly why this inmate was immediately placed into more restrictive custody,” said Peter Thorne, the DOC’s deputy commissioner of public information.Husamudeen said the attack wasn’t all that surprising.“For us, the writing is on the wall,” he said.Just five weeks ago, 39-year-old Jean Souffrant, also a Rikers correction officer, suffered a brutal attack at the hands of a group of inmates. He suffered a fractured spine and bleeding on the brain.Last Tuesday, a 24-year-old officer was assaulted on the job.The union also claims there was another incident last week.“A female correction officer, who was breaking up a fight, and she, too, had her jaw broken by inmates who were under 21 years old,” Husamudeen said. “We do not have the backing or protection of the mayor of the city of New York and even his administration, his commissioner. There’s not enough being done.”Now, the union is demanding action from the Department of Correction commissioner, city public advocate Letitia James and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.“This guy who assaulted this correction officer yesterday, he just assaulted another one last year,” Husamudeen said. “He’s coming out of one of these programs where they put inmates … that’s alternative to punitive segregation.”Husamadeen claims attacks on officers have increased since the de Blasio administration did away with punitive segregation for younger inmates, which means putting them in solitary confinement when they act up.But a spokesperson for the Department of Correction said assaults on staff resulting in serious injury have decreased 14 percent over the last three years.The union disputes that number and claims there is all talk and no action. (AP) — A utility says it had a problem with a transmission tower near where the Kincade Fire ignited in Northern California wine country, prompting a large evacuation.Pacific Gas & Electric filed a report with the state utilities commission Thursday saying it became aware of a transmission level outage in the Geysers in Sonoma County around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.The wildfire was reported minutes later in the same area, although it is not clear whether the malfunction sparked the blaze.The state’s largest utility preemptively shut off power in Northern California on Thursday in a bid to prevent toppled electrical lines from igniting wildfires in dry, hot gusty winds.Power was shut off to distribution lines but not to transmission lines. 755
