House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., filed a request with the Joint Committee on the Library on Wednesday to remove 11 statues of Confederate leaders from the US Capitol.The statues are held in Statuary Hall, and is a prominent spot for visitors of the US Capitol. The hall is frequently seen in the background of media interviews with members of Congress.Each state sends two statues to be viewed in Statuary Hall. States largely decide on the statues to be displayed in the hall. Among the statues in Statuary Hall include Confederacy president Jefferson Davis and Confederate commander Robert E. Lee.“The statues in the Capitol should embody our highest ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation,” Pelosi said in a letter to formalize her request. “Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end are a grotesque affront to these ideals. Their statues pay homage to hate, not heritage. They must be removed.“While I believe it is imperative that we never forget our history lest we repeat it, I also believe that there is no room for celebrating the violent bigotry of the men of the Confederacy in the hallowed halls of the United States Capitol or in places of honor across the country.”Pelosi’s sent her letter around the same time NASCAR announced that it is banning Confederate flags from be displayed at its race tracks. Immunotherapy has gained ground against a stubborn opponent: ovarian cancer. A personalized cancer vaccine is safe and may lengthen the lives of ovarian cancer patients, a small clinical trial found.The research, published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, showed "significantly higher" overall survival at two years among patients who received the vaccine, compared with patients who did not.Ovarian cancer is a "silent killer" because often it goes unnoticed until it is diagnosed at a late stage. Treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy, most patients -- 85% -- relapse and ultimately develop resistance to the chemo. At this point, they run out of treatment options.Still, scientists are hopeful based on the fact that a subset of patients shows an immune response to their cancer. Generally, these patients have better survival rates than those whose immune systems don't react in the same way.A vaccine, then, might be able to trigger and boost the immune system and increase the survival rates of patients, said Dr. Lana Kandalaft, senior author of the new study and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.  1210

(KGTV) - A new event venue is honoring the history of the South Bay, while giving people a gorgeous view for their parties and meetings.Salt Drift Pointe, at 536 13th Street, has 13,000 square feet of space. It includes a main room, a bar, patio, pier and more."It's a huge blank space," says Co-Owner Richard Inunza of the venue. "We've got a great atmosphere and great views."Inzunza and his co-owner Terry Snyder designed the venue specifically to try and pay homage to the South Bay. The "rustic wall" in the event space is painted to reflect the colors of the bay. And the name, Salt Drift Pointe, refers to the industrial history of the region.RELATED: New Chula Vista event space highlights city's rich history"When Rich and I thought about the name for this place, we wanted to grab the natural landscapes," says Snyder. "As you can see from the beautiful views we have of the salt ponds and the old salt mines, we wanted to include the salt."Salt played a big part in the South Bay story. According to San Diego History Center Historian Andy Strathman, it was the first industry that helped the region shift away from a farm-based economy during the late 1800s."You could build very large settling basins to bring the saltwater in and allow it to evaporate over time," says Strathman. "You would get the water increasingly saline, and eventually, you could harvest the salt."In the 21st century, the South Bay has shifted its economy again, trying to attract more tourists. The new Chula Vista Bayfront project is expected to bring in more than billion every year once it's completed.Inzunza and Snyder say it's fitting that a new business like theirs, which will tap into the hospitality industry, honors the past."We hope families can come and enjoy this place for years," says Snyder.To celebrate, Salt Drift Pointe is hosting a free grand opening party on Oct. 30. In an op-ed in USA Today, White House staffer and Assistant to the President Peter Navarro denounced Dr. Anthony Fauci — the Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases — as being "wrong about everything I have interacted with him on" when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.In the column, Navarro claimed Fauci — who, until recently, was one of the most publicly available members of the coronavirus task force — did not properly warn the public about the dangers of COVID-19."When I warned in late January in a memo of a possibly deadly pandemic, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was telling the news media not to worry," he wrote in his op-ed.Navarro claimed in the column that Fauci "fought against" President Donald Trump's decision to ban travel between the United States in China, despite ample evidence to the contrary.Finally, Navarro chastised Fauci for "flip-flopping on the use of masks."Fauci and several other government officials and agencies — including the CDC and Surgeon General Jerome Adams — initially recommended against the use of masks by the general public in the hopes of preserving a depleted national stockpile. In a joint status update filed in federal court, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team claimed that former Trump campaign head Paul Manafort had lied to investigators after promising to cooperate with Mueller as part of a plea agreement. On Sept. 14, Manafort pleaded guilty on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and witness tampering. Manafort has remained in prison awaiting sentencing. Part of the update reads: "The plea agreement provides that if the defendant fails to fulfill completely “each and every one” of his obligations under this agreement, or “engages in any criminal activity prior to sentencing,” the defendant will be in breach of the agreement. A breach relieves the government of any obligations it has under the agreement, including its agreement to a reduction in the Sentencing Guidelines for acceptance of responsibility, but leaves intact all the obligations of the defendant as well as his guilty pleas."Manafort's counsel disputed the FBI's claims. The report states, "After signing the plea agreement, Manafort met with the government on numerous occasions and answered the government’s questions.
