SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--San Diego professor, life coach and community activist Starla Lewis shared some words of wisdom this presidential election. The following is an e-mail written by Lewis that's been shared around San Diego and beyond over the last several days:Katie Elizabeth White Boyd was born in 1880 on a plantation in Missouri and lived to be 100 years old. She lived through 21 presidencies. I was born in 1949, in a colored hospital, during legal segregation. I desegregated a school in Missouri and a school in California. I have lived through 13 Presidencies. As I think about the election, I am moved to share words of wisdom from my Great Aunt Kate and Myself, the things that she taught me and the things that I have learned.1. 4 Years “This too shall pass.”Whatever the outcome of the election, whichever candidate wins, they only have 4 years to influence what happens in the United States and the World.2. We the People “No one can stop you from being anything you want to be or doing anything you want to do but you.”We can be a government of all people, by all people and for all people when we exercise our voice beyond voting day.3. Treat All People With Respect “How you treat people speaks volumes about who you are and nothing about who they are.”Whether you are happy about the outcome or not, let us be an example of what you want to see in the world. The youth are watching. Teach them that we can win and lose with grace. The world is watching. Show them that we can accept the outcomes of our elections with civility.4. Come Together to Heal and Celebrate “A sorrow shared is half the sorrow. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) -- With sudden layoffs and overcrowded grocery stores, the coronavirus is making it even more difficult for families to feed themselves. But many are stepping up to distribute food for free.Three hundred sixty-five cars lined up with their trunks popped wide open, ready for bags of free food to be plopped in. Following their new drive-up food bank protocols, volunteers at the Community Through Hope (CTH) warehouse in Chula Vista made no direct contact with the families in line. "We were able to provide so much nutrition in his very safe environment and get it out quickly," Rosey Vasquez, Executive Director of CTH, said. It was the same story at the Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside. Their Feeding San Diego distribution was supposed to last all day. But their warehouse cleared up after 150 cars rolled in, in just two hours. Meanwhile, in the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego, the kitchen staff at Metl Bar and Restaurant are hard at work. They are not getting nearly as many orders with just take-home and deliveries. But the owners, Jenna and Randy Elskamp, did not want to lay off their staff. Their idea was to have them continue to make hot meals for newly unemployed restaurant workers. "And so giving back to our industry was where we want to help."They have a couple of sponsors now. But the Elskamps have no idea if they could survive this in the long run. But as veterans in the restaurant industry, they said they know the hardships. That is why they set up a section of their website to offer free meals for anyone in the industry struggling to feed themselves."I feel like we are all on a sinking ship right now," Jenna said. "Instead of being the rats who are trying to climb up to the very top of the ship to save themselves, we want to be there at the bottom, trying to help everyone survive. Because we either make it out of this together or we don't. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer for the man who styled the hair of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says he believes she was set up when she went to a San Francisco salon that wasn't permitted to have indoor services because of the coronavirus pandemic. Pelosi is facing backlash after Fox News Channel aired footage showing the speaker walking through the salon without a mask on. But a lawyer for the stylist says the owner gave permission for the appointment and made “vitriolic and incendiary comments" about Pelosi. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An appeals court today overturned a ruling that would have allowed the conditional release of the “Bolder Than Most” rapist, Alvin Quarles. The ruling was issued by the 4th District Court of Appeals Monday. The court said, in part that “Quarles is a serial rapist whose crimes were shockingly brutal and destructive. If he fails after he is conditionally released, considering his past, we shudder to contemplate the consequences of such a failure.”After news broke of the reversal, Dianne Jacob, who serves on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and has been adamantly against the release, spoke out on Twitter. We must continue to fight the placement of sexually violent predators into our communities,” Jacob said in part. The ruling comes after San Diego County Superior Court Judge David M. Gill's decision to release Quarles to a home somewhere in San Diego County. After his release, he would have undergone treatment through a conditional release program.Gill's ruling followed a series of closed-door hearings that involved testimony from psychiatrists and other experts. Quarles was dubbed the "Bolder Than Most" rapist due to the way he attacked his victims at knifepoint, sometimes forcing the women's husbands or boyfriends to watch. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to committing over a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. Just Call Us Volunteers gives back to those in need year around. They encourage everyone to come spread a little cheer throughout the year. 925
