Target announced Tuesday that it is raising its starting pay to an hour beginning July 5, fulfilling a promise it made three years ago to pay all employees at least an hour.In 2017, Target announced it planned to increase starting pay for employees from to an hour by 2020. Since then, the store has gradually increased its starting pay each year. TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa Catholic school experienced heightened police presence and low attendance Tuesday after a former contracted employee threatened violence on campus. "When I first walked into school there was like eight people and then like they kept saying there was like police and a lockdown drill will happen," said Sofia Diaco, a fourth-grade student at Academy of the Holy Names. Tampa Police advised school officials at Academy of the Holy Names to operate on a modified lockdown Tuesday as they searched for the person who threatened to "shoot up the school.""There's no question that when you hear about such a specific and violent threat, you worry about your children's safety and you entrust that safety to the school," said parent Dan Diaco. Ainya Smalls, 23, was arrested for making the threat in front of students and staff as a supervisor escorted her off campus after being terminated on Monday. Smalls worked for a cleaning company hired by the school. "A lot of people were scared, some post-traumatic issues from some of the children, and some of the parents to be honest," Diaco said. Scripps station WFTS in Tampa has learned, Smalls already had a warrant out for her arrest for criminal mischief while she worked at the historic Catholic school. Officials say Smalls passed a Level 2 background check provided by the cleaning company. But after this incident, they will now conduct their own screenings for all contracted employees and plan on re-screening every member of the cleaning staff. "I think the Academy's new policy of taking control of the background checks is a wonderful remedy to help prevent something like this from happening again," Diaco said. SWANTON, Ohio - An Ohio father's message about bullying has gone viral. Matt Cox's daughter was suspended from riding the school bus on Nov. 30 due to bullying. Cox said his daughter told him that he had to drive her to school the following week, but he decided to teach her lesson instead. "I realized she viewed the privilege of riding the bus and or car rides to and from school as a right and not a privilege," Cox said. On Monday, Cox made his daughter walk to school and posted a video on Facebook saying, "Life lessons."In the video, Cox said a lot of children today feel that the things their parents do for them are a right and not a privilege. Cox said his daughter was upset when she first started walking on Monday.During the walk, Cox talked to his daughter about how her actions were the reason she was walking. He said by the end of the walk she calmed down and realized that if she hadn't bullied others she would still be on the bus. The video has been shared more than 200,000 times. Cox said he was shocked when he found out the video went viral. "I was in complete shock that so many people responded when I originally posted it. I just thought friends and family would see it, and then a friend asked me to make it public so that they could share it," Cox said. "By the time I woke up the next day I had hundreds of messages in my inbox and saw that there were quite a few views."Cox said he sat down with his children to show them the comments on the video so that they could understand the effects of bullying. "She, along with my other two children, seem to show a great deal of empathy towards some of the sad stories that I read with them," Cox said. He believes his daughter learned her lesson about bullying and will now appreciate the bus ride to school.Cox hopes that when others view the video, they will learn just how much words can hurt others. "I just hope that through the video being shared kids can take a look and read some of the comments and tutorials on the post and see just how much words can hurt and cut deep and can have lasting effects on those involved sometimes in the most awful cases life-ending effects," Cox said. "I also hope that parents see the video and start holding their kids accountable for their actions and stop sweeping their child's actions under the rug with the ideology that kids will be kids. Surveillance video captured the moment this week when a bolt of lightning made a direct hit on a home in Daytona Beach, Florida.Cindy Holt's surveillance camera recorded the moment the home's roof was hit by the lightning.She thought her boyfriend, pulling in at the same moment, had an accident."It was huge. It shook the house ... I thought he had actually hit the garage door," said Holt. "It was scary. I just thank God nobody was in the house at the time."Immediately after the strike, they noticed smoke coming from the roof and ran to the scene.A person spoke to the residents of the house to alert them about the lightning strike."You could see the smoke. You could see there was no fire, thank God," said Holt.Firefighters think the home's electrical system is fried.There were several scorch marks in the home's eave and around a light near the garage door.Though lightning struck just the one house, several other nearby residents lost phone and/or internet service."It's scary. Starbucks says it has developed a solution to block customers from viewing pornography on its free public Wi-Fi.The coffee giant originally promised to block pron sites in 2016 as soon as it developed a system to block graphic sites. Starbucks has not divulged details on how its content filtering system will work.According to Business Insider, Starbucks' policy change comes after a petition issued by an internet safety group Enough Is Enough garnered 26,000 signatures. The group's CEO, Donna Rice Hughes, claims that by allowing unfiltered Wi-Fi, Starbucks was "keeping the doors wide open for convicted sex offenders and others to fly under the radar from law enforcement and use free, public Wi-Fi services to access illegal child porn and hard-core pornography."Starbucks said in a statement to The Verge that “While it rarely occurs, the use of Starbucks public Wi-Fi to view illegal or egregious content is not, nor has it ever been permitted...We have identified a solution to prevent this content from being viewed within our stores and we will begin introducing it to our US locations in 2019.”According to Enough Is Enough, Starbucks was lagging behind other restaurant chains like McDonald's and Subway, both of which banned pornography on their Wi-Fi networks in 2016.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W.
