Over halfway through the flight, they had to divert to Chicago.One of their fellow passengers tried to break one of the cardinal rules of modern air travel: do not smoke on airplanes. Then the passenger refused to comply with flight crew instructions by trying to light up a cigarette -- again.About an hour before they were supposed to land in Philadelphia, pilots were forced to divert to O'Hare International Airport."Due to a disruptive passenger onboard and out of an abundance of caution, the flight was diverted to Chicago and landed at 4:22 a.m. local time," Alaska Airlines told CNN.Chicago Police say they were asked to meet the plane because of the cigarette-lighting passenger, who "was somewhat belligerent."While the individual was escorted off the plane without incident, the diversion added an hour onto the other passengers' red-eye flight, since the plane needed refueling.It's unclear if the passenger will face any punishment for their actions. The FAA, which enforces the regulations the passenger violated, told CNN the incident is under investigation.Chicago Police say they did not make an arrest. The FBI and US Marshals tell CNN they did not make any arrest either.According to the agency's own recommendations, a flight attendant or pilot in charge should be filing a noncompliance report.CNN has asked Alaska Airlines if the crew from the flight has filed a report but has not yet received a response. 1711

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In New York’s capital region, just 20 minutes north of the state capital building, is Tech Valley Office Interiors and Rod Dion who has owned the small business for 15 years.“It’s been quite a ride,” said Dion. “We opened up, we were very successful our first three years, then the great recession hit and we had four or five years we prefer not to look back at and ever since then, it has been a happily steady rise again.” Like many small businesses in America, Tech Valley has enjoyed growth in this economy. However, with the upside has come a downside of a tight labor market.“Before, I would just put an ad up and I would have 50 resumes and have a person within a day or two,” Dion explained. “Now, I can go 30 days and I will get two or three resumes and they are not even qualified for the position.”Tech Valley is a part of the 88 percent of small businesses across the country that report struggling to hire qualified workers in a labor market where there are more available jobs than people looking for work. The Department of Labor and Statistics estimates there are 6.4 million jobs available but only 5.89 million people seeking work. Employees have an advantage and are forcing all employers to get competitive to actually hire good talent.Tech Valley is in that position currently, trying to hire at least two full-time positions. “We are paying a lot more than we did in the past,” said Dion. “We are probably paying about ,000 more in starting salary more, per employee, than we were 10 years ago.”Like most small businesses, Tech Valley cannot afford more significant salary increases. However, it still has to compete for new talent in this labor market and compete to keep its current staff, so it’s begun helping employees pay off their college debt. Student loan repayment is a benefit few employers offer. It can be costly, but ultimately less expensive than what it would cost the company to lose an employee or not be able to grow its staff.“The only way a business like mine is going to grow is to grow my staff, so if I can’t grow my staff, we are not going to grow as a whole,” said Dion.Stunted growth in any business could eventually lead to less profits, which would be an even bigger problem.“It is very difficult right now there is more of a strain going on than many people realize, but in many ways there have been positives out of it,” Dion explained. “Salaries have gone up and businesses understand what they have to do to respond to their needs.” 2518

An analysis of the airline industry suggests that major airlines will likely go bankrupt by May, as the industry encounters an abrupt interruption in travel due to coronavirus fears. According to a report by the Centre for Aviation on Monday, airlines are running low on cash reserves as flights are either being canceled, or being flown with few passengers. Stocks for major airlines have taken a huge tumble. United Airlines stock has dropped by 60 percent in the last month. Delta's stock has dropped more than 40%. American Airlines' stock dropped 45% in the last month.Delta announced an approximately 50% cut in capacity for April and May on Monday. Delta expects these cuts to extend into the summer travel period. Even with those cuts, Delta said its expecting load factors to drop into the 20-30% range -- assuming things don't get worse.United Airlines said it estimates March 2020 revenues will be .5 billion below March 2019 figures after having one million fewer passengers the first two weeks of March this year compared to last. United is also dropping 40% of its domestic flights and 75% of its international routes. American Airlines is also dropping 75% of its international flights.
