A newly proposed Ohio bill would make it punishable by law for physicians to medically aid transgender children through gender transition therapies. Two Ohio lawmakers have proposed charging physicians who do treat transgender children with a third-degree felony if they attempt therapeutic or surgical procedures to change the gender of anyone under the age of 18. It would also allow parents to sue those physicians. While the bill hasn't been formally filed yet, it's already caused concern among those who support transgender rights. "Without the medications, and the access to doctors and therapists and all this, I don't know where these children are going to turn or what they're going to do," said Jessica Cicchinelli, the mother of a transgender child. "And that, that scares me more than anything." Cicchinelli's child is one of 1,600 patients receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, in the Living with Change Clinic specifically designed to serve transgender children. Two doctors, a social worker and several members of nursing personnel work in the department currently. The conservative group Citizens for Community Values supports the bill and other legislation like it. Citizens for Community Values has not responded to a request for comment. Reps. Sedrick Denson and Bridgid Kelly responded, saying they do not support it. Five other state state lawmakers did not respond. Cicchinelli said the treatments her child receive are important, and help her child thrive. She's working to raise money to help fund the work that happens in the Living with Change Clinic."These lawmakers should not have the right to choose how we live our lives and the type of medication and that, you know, that we get," said Cicchinelli. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association say "...physicians play a role by offering a safe and inclusive place for transgender and gender diverse youth ... " 1951

A shopping trip for school supplies at a Texas Walmart ended in tragedy for a mother who was fatally shot while shielding her infant son from gunfire, her aunt told CNN.Jordan Anchondo and her husband were shopping for school supplies after dropping off their daughter at cheer practice when a gunman opened fire in an El Paso shopping center, Elizabeth Terry told CNN on Sunday. The mother of three later died at a hospital after using her body to protect her 2-month-old son, Terry said. Her husband, Andre, is still missing, the aunt said."How do parents go school shopping and then die shielding their baby from bullets?" Terry said."The baby still had her blood on him. You watch these things and see these things and you never think this is going to happen to your family."Anchondo was one of at least 20 people killed after the gunman opened fire Saturday in what authorities are calling an act of domestic terrorism. It was the third mass shooting in the United States in a week -- and less than 24 hours later another deadly shooting spree in Dayton, Ohio, left nine dead.Families are still trying to identify loved ones. The baby was "pulled from under her body," said Terry, the sister of Anchondo's father, Paul, for whom the injured infant is named. The infant suffered broken fingers and is due to undergo an MRI, said Terry, who traveled from Sacramento after the shooting to be with her family in El Paso."My brother is devastated. We are just hoping and praying we find Andre alive. Any little hope that we can hold on to, that's what we are doing," Terry said. The first call of an active shooter went out at 10:39 a.m. local time, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said. Around 2 p.m., Anchondo's relatives started calling each other, saying the couple was not answering their phones, Terry said. She died alone at the hospital because no one was able to immediately find her, her aunt said."It took us a while to confirm and identify her throughout all the chaos."Anchondo's father confirmed her identity. Now, the family is grieving the loss of a beloved mother, daughter and niece.Originally from Odessa, Texas, Anchondo loved being a mother to her children, Terry said. In addition to her two-month-old son, she had two children ages 5 and 2."She was light of the family. She had the most contagious smile and laugh," Terry told CNN."We lost the light of our family and the light of our heart. She would talk with anyone. She had a heart gold." 2471

Although many consider vaping a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, researchers from the Ohio State University say it is not a good to make such claims at this time. Part of the reason is that research led by OSU Professor of Nursing and Medicine Loren Wold claims that there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes and their aerosol constituents, nicotine, carbonyl compounds, particulate matter, metals and flavorings can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. The study was published last week in journal Cardiovascular Research. The authors of the study say, however, that there is not sufficient data to make conclusions on the exact effect e-cigarettes have on the heart."Great caution and hesitation should remain concerning e-cigarette use until its health risk profile is better established," the study reads. "Therefore, additional high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively establish the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes."“Many people think these products are safe, but there is more and more reason to worry about their effects on heart health,” Wold said. The research comes as federal and state officials have been looking into why there has been an increase to the number of vapers who have suffered from lung disease due to vaping. As of last week, there have been 39 confirmed deaths and more than 2,000 cases of lung disease likely caused from vaping, the CDC said. Part of the problem, Wold said, is that the long-term effects of vaping is unknown. In 2011, there were 7 million people who used e-cigarettes. That number has since increased to 41 million. “We know these problems are seen in these studies looking at the short-term effects of vaping, but that research is inconsistent and the impact of chronic e-cigarette use is an outright mystery. The potential harm to the heart over time is essentially unstudied,” Wold said.To read more about the study, click 1950

A team of doctors, lawyers and advocates are warning of what they say are major health and hygiene problems at several US Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas."There was just a pervasive health crisis," said attorney Toby Gialluca, describing what she said were conditions at the Ursula Processing Center in McAllen, Texas. "Virtually everyone we saw was ill."Clara Long, a senior researcher for Human Rights Watch, described what she said were "unconscionable conditions" at a Border Patrol station in Clint, Texas, where unaccompanied minors were being held."The kids had colds and were sick and said they didn't have access to soap to wash their hands. It was an alcohol-based cleanser. Some kids who were detained for 2-3 weeks had only one or two opportunities to shower. One said they hadn't showered in three weeks," she said. "Hygiene and living conditions like this creates a risk of spreading infectious disease. It makes me very concerned about the public health emergency."The allegations, 1027
