President Donald Trump's attorney in a defamation case with a former "Apprentice" contestant is asking a judge for an interim stay pending appeal, which would temporarily suspend the case until the appeal has been decided. The lawsuit was filed by Summer Zervos in January 2017 and alleges Trump defamed her after she accused him in an October 2016 news conference of sexually assaulting her in 2007.Trump's attorney, Marc Kasowitz, is appealing the March 20 ruling by New York Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter, who allowed the case to go forward. The move was expected, and Zervos' legal team plans to fight it. 626
President Donald Trump tried to end the special counsel probe in December, marking the second known attempt to do so, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The Times report on Tuesday evening came as CNN reported that Trump is considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight of the Mueller probe, following a federal raid on Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen. In December, angered by reports of subpoenas for information on his business with Deutsche Bank, Trump told advisers he wanted the investigation to be shut down, according to the Times' report. The Times report, based on interviews with eight sources, said the President backed down after Mueller's office told Trump's lawyers and advisers that reports about the subpoenas were inaccurate. The report outlines the second time Trump is known to have moved to quash the probe, and follows previous reporting?that the President moved to fire Mueller last June, which a source said White House counsel Donald McGahn refused. Trump denied the story at the time.Under special counsel regulations, Mueller's office would have to discuss with the attorney general whether to keep an investigation under the special counsel's office or to refer it to a different jurisdiction. Because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from oversight of the investigation, Rosenstein would then presumably decide which investigative team moves forward.Trump has regularly lashed out at Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and following news of the raid Monday, he offered a mixed response when asked about firing the special counsel."Why don't I just fire Mueller?" the President said. "Well, I think it's a disgrace what's going on. We'll see what happens."White House press secretary Sarah Sanders?said on Tuesday?that Trump "certainly believes he has the power" to fire Mueller, who under the special counsel regulations can be removed only by the attorney general, or in this case Rosenstein. 2008
Renting a home or condo for a vacation is more popular than ever, thanks to websites such as Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway.Unfortunately, a growing number of those rentals are coming with an unwelcome surprise: hidden cameras that record your every move. It’s happening more and more. Just last month, a British couple found a hidden camera inside the alarm clock in their Toronto Airbnb rental.Last fall, a couple on a Florida vacation found a camera hidden in a smoke detector in the bedroom of their Longboat Key condo. They even found the footage it took of them, stored on a miniature hard drive. Why are spy cameras are showing up in more and more rentals?Simple: It’s so easy for owners to do it.A few years ago you needed expensive equipment and wires to hook up a miniature camera. Now you can get a tiny webcam for or less on Amazon and hide it anywhere. 901
Republicans are hoping to keep control of the Senate and expand their majority in the upper chamber of Congress, while Democrats are looking to stave off losses and flip as many seats as possible as voters head to the polls in Tuesday's 2018 midterm elections.Despite a seemingly energized grassroots electorate, the Democratic Party has been viewed as a long shot to take back control of the Senate where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority of 51 seats to 49 seats for Democrats.Democrats face a daunting Senate map in the 2018 midterms and have been forced to defend 10 seats in states that President Donald Trump won in the 2016 presidential election, including North Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, Indiana and Missouri.PHOTOS: Voter turnout around the nationRepublicans do not have to defend as many vulnerable incumbents as Democrats in the midterms. Only a handful of seats are viewed as potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, with the party hoping to flip seats in closely-watched races in states such as Arizona and Nevada, as well as longer shot attempts in Tennessee and Texas. If Republicans maintain control, it will put the GOP in position to continue driving forward the President's agenda in at least one chamber of Congress. If Democrats manage to win the Senate, it would be a major setback for Republicans and a significant victory for a party that has been locked out of power in Washington since Trump won the White House.Control of the Senate will determine whether key elements of the President's agenda will be thwarted or advanced, including judicial confirmations and executive branch appointments. It will also determine whether Senate Democrats can launch investigations into controversies that have surrounded Trump while he has been in office and before he was elected, including allegations surrounding obstruction of justice, Trump's finances and potential Russian collusion. 1930
