MEXICO CITY — Volunteer searchers found 12 skeletons and one decomposed body in a shallow pit in the desert near the Mexican resort of Puerto Penasco.Prosecutors in the northern border state of Sonora said late Thursday that two of the bodies may be women. Tests are being conducted to determine the gender and identity of the bodies.Prosecutors said only one of the bodies was relatively recent; the others were "complete skeletons with clothing."The bodies were found by a group of women who are volunteer searchers. The group is made up of relatives of missing people who investigate reports of clandestine burial sites.Because of deficient police investigations, such volunteer groups have been responsible for discovering mass graves and burial pits in many parts of Mexico.Drug and kidnapping gangs use such pits to dispose of the bodies of victims or rivals.Puerto Penasco is also known as Rocky Point. It is located on the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. While not as violent as some other parts of Mexico, Puerto Penasco has been known for Sinaloa drug cartel activity and a large-scale shootout between cartel gunmen and military forces occurred there in 2013. 1198

McDonald’s plans to accelerate “some restaurant closings previously planned for future years” because of the pandemic, resulting in 200 closures in the U.S. in 2020.More than half of the closures are restaurants in Walmart store locations, according to the company. They did not detail which stores would be closing. The announcement came during an earnings call with investors and reporters Tuesday, in which McDonald’s talked about their up-and-down second quarter of the year. They said 96% of its 39,000 restaurants worldwide are now open, compared to 75% at the start of the second quarter in April. But the recovery is uneven. Improvement has slowed in China, but same-store sales are improving in the U.S. McDonald’s net income fell 68% to 4 million during the second quarter.McDonald’s has about 14,000 restaurants in the U.S. and on the earnings call said they will have a gain of 350 net new restaurants this year as construction gets started in parts of the country.McDonald’s is not alone in closing restaurants during the pandemic. A recent report from Yelp stated 60 percent of restaurants that closed during the pandemic are permanently closed. 1168

Mental health experts are concerned that people who are unemployed amid the COVID-19 pandemic may be experiencing more mental health issues.Art Goldsmith, a professor of economics at Washinton and Lee University, says that some people who don't have a financial buffer — particularly minorities or people who have young kids — might become more emotionally distressed by losing their job.Unemployed people are normally optimistic at first. But after five or six weeks, feelings of hopelessness or anxiety increase."That's when I would say the psychological distress really arise, and poor emotional well-being starts to become a footprint of that bout of unemployment," Goldsmith siad.According to Maria Heidkamp, the director of the New Start Career Network at Rutgers University, that's concerning because the number of people who have been unemployed long-term has ballooned during the pandemic. She says that combing the stress of the health emergency with the pressure of being unemployed compounds an already difficult process."Your self-esteem can take a beating if you apply for jobs and get a series of rejections, and you don't know why. Or maybe you don't hear anything." Heidkamp said. "Even pre-pandemic, we know how stressful it is. "Heidkamp says that unemployed people should break up their job search and related goals into small, manageable steps. She suggests re-doing resumes or building an online presence in small chunks. She also suggests finding activities that reduce stress during unemployment and searching for part-time work while continuing to look for full-time employment.New Start Career Network is also partnering with the Mental Health Association of New Jersey to offer online health and wellness workshops. 1749

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Voters have rebuffed President Donald Trump and nominated two Republicans he opposed to House seats from North Carolina and Kentucky. In western North Carolina, GOP voters picked 24-year-old investor Madison Cawthorn over Trump-backed real estate agent Lynda Bennett. In Kentucky, Rep. Thomas Massie easily defeated his Republican challenger, Todd McMurtry. In March, when Massie held up the passage of a coronavirus stimulus bill by signaling he was a "no" on a key procedural vote, Trump called him a "grandstander" and called for his removal from the party.Calls in higher-profile races in Kentucky and New York face days of delay as officials count mail-in ballots. One of Tuesday's top races involves former Marine combat pilot Amy McGrath's fight for the Democratic nomination to challenge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this November. She faced a challenge from underdog progressive Democrat Charles Booker. The other involves House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel of New York, who is seeking a primary win over another progressive candidate, Jamaal Bowman. Engel is seeking a 17th House term. 1149
