CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China called off its grade II drought emergency response on Tuesday as the severe drought in its southwestern regions eased after recent rain.The drought, one of the worst in decades, eased in most parts of the Chongqing Municipality, provinces of Sichuan and Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement on its website.But in Yunnan Province, the drought was still severe in most parts as the province had only received limited and scattered rainfalls, it said.Southwestern China had six falls of rain between March 22 and April 26, which ranged in volume from 50 to 100 millimeters, figures from the China Meteorological Administration showed.As of Tuesday, up to 123 million mu (about 8.3 million hectares) of arable land in China was affected by the drought, with 17.91 million people and 12.43 million farm animals still short of water, said the statement.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank will push forward yuan settlement in cross-border trade and investment in the western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), said Tuesday.Zhou said it was one of PBOC's important moves amid the central government's efforts to achieve leapfrog development and lasting stability in Xinjiang. However, he did not elaborate on the plan nor give a timetable.He said the PBOC would also support the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in Xinjiang.Chinese exporters and importers in five cities -- Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan -- are already allowed to settle cross-border trade deals in yuan.A PBOC report said last month that the country needs to expand yuan cross-border settlement when conditions allow.
