If you were born after 1959, when Hawaii became the 50th state, 50 states in this country is all you've ever known. Paul Strauss, the shadow-senator for the District of Columbia, thinks it's time to change that. "This is the first century where we haven’t admitted a new state yet," Strauss told Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George."That flag used to always change and get more and more stars on it," Strauss added. As shadow-senator, Strauss has no vote in committee or on the floor of the United States Senate. The possibility of another state joining the Union is intensifying as the prospect for a Democratic sweep on Election night increases. WHY ODDS ARE INCREASINGDemocrats are expected to maintain control of the House of Representatives and the chamber has already passed a bill admitting D.C. into the union.Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has also backed the idea. Meanwhile, if Democrats take back the Senate and change the filibuster rule, the possibility of D.C. becoming a state is even more likely. That's because Democrats would only need 51 votes in favor of statehood. Currently 60 votes are needed and unlikely even if Democrats win big on election night. DEMOCRATS' POLITICAL MOTIVE Of course Democrats have a political motive in making the District of Columbia a state beyond the belief that "no taxation without representation" is unjust. D.C. is an overwhelmingly Democratic city with only 4% voting for President Trump in 2016. In all likelihood, two Democratic Senators would be elected, giving Democrats a major political advantage for decades to come. "This is not about the voice of the people of the District of Columbia, this is a raw powerplay," Senator Steve Daines, R-Montana, said in a recent interview with Scripps. Daines says if D.C. truly wants representation, Virginia or Maryland could annex parts of the city where people live. Strauss couldn't disagree more. "We want to join the union. What could be more patriotic than that?" Strauss said. For those who say the Constitution calls for the seat of government to not be in a state, Strauss says a new special district would be created outside of D.C.'s jurisdiction and stretch from the Supreme Court to the Capitol, through the National Mall and to the White House. 2278

Ice cream lovers will rejoice on April 10 as makers of the frozen dairy treat Ben & Jerry's will be offering free ice cream cones at its Scoop Shops nationwide. According to the company, this is the 40th annual "Free Cone Day" for Ben & Jerry's. The company said cones will only be limited to "the number of times you can get back in line." Ben & Jerry's also said customers can choose from various flavors. Ben & Jerry's said it normally gives away 1 million free ice cream cones every April for "Free Cone Day." "We believe in having fun, and in thanking our fans with free ice cream as each year goes by," said Ben & Jerry's CEO Jostein Solheim. "To us it's a chance to have a bit of a party, to build connections with our fans, and show them how much we appreciate them!"To find one of the hundreds of Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops participating in Free Cone Day, click here.  938

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston officials have canceled the Texas GOP’s in-person convention. They say the spread of the coronavirus made it impossible to hold the event as scheduled.Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wednesday that the city’s lawyers exercised provisions in the contract that the Texas Republican Party signed to rent the downtown convention center for a three-day event to have started July 16.Virus cases have surged in Texas, particularly in the state’s largest cities.Republican Gov. Greg Abbott had publicly deferred to state party leaders who last week voted to go forward with an in-person event. 620

IKEA is offering to buy back certain furniture that is no longer wanted or needed to resell in their bargain section. In exchange, customers get an IKEA gift card for up to 50 percent of the original price."By making sustainable living more simple and accessible, Ikea hopes that the initiative will help its customers take a stand against excessive consumption this Black Friday and in the years to come," the Swedish furniture giant said in a release. The buyback initiative will be available in 27 countries in late November, including the United Kingdom, Russia and Canada, but not the US at this time. The New York Times reports there are some IKEA stores around the world with various buyback programs, but this would be the first time the initiative would be scaled across this many countries.“Rather than buy things you don’t need this Black Friday, we want to help customers give their furniture a second life instead of making an impulse buy,” says Ingka Group Deputy Retail Operations Manager Stefan Vanoverbeke in a press release.Products like dressers, bookcases, shelf units, chairs, tables and cupboards must be fully assembled in order to be eligible for the buyback offer. Customers will have to fill out a form and drop it off at an IKEA store. An employee will assess it and offer a price to buy the item back at, depending on the condition of the product. The item is then put in the discount area of the store and sold for the price IKEA bought it back for.The company says the initiative is part of their sustainability push, to address “unsustainable consumption and its impact on climate change.”Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns and stay-at-home orders have been good for home improvements and IKEA. The company announced last week sales have surged 45 percent year-over-year. 1804

In an op-ed in USA Today, White House staffer and Assistant to the President Peter Navarro denounced Dr. Anthony Fauci — the Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases — as being "wrong about everything I have interacted with him on" when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. In the column, Navarro claimed Fauci — who, until recently, was one of the most publicly available members of the coronavirus task force — did not properly warn the public about the dangers of COVID-19."When I warned in late January in a memo of a possibly deadly pandemic, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was telling the news media not to worry," he wrote in his op-ed.Navarro claimed in the column that Fauci "fought against" President Donald Trump's decision to ban travel between the United States in China, despite ample evidence to the contrary. Finally, Navarro chastised Fauci for "flip-flopping on the use of masks."Fauci and several other government officials and agencies — including the CDC and Surgeon General Jerome Adams — initially recommended against the use of masks by the general public in the hopes of preserving a depleted national stockpile. However, Fauci has often advocated for the use of masks in public since the CDC changed its guidance in April, and has since admitted the inconsistent guidance was "was detrimental in getting the message across."Navarro's op-ed is just the latest attempt by White House officials to discredit the administration's top infectious disease expert in the middle of a pandemic. Over the weekend, reports emerged that an anonymous White House official told several news agencies that the administration was concerned about Fauci's track record on the virus.President Donald Trump has also publicly broken with Fauci on several points, including reopening schools, testing and the current outlook. On Monday, Trump maintained that he and Fauci have a "very good relationship."A New York Times poll indicates that 76% of Americans trusted Fauci to provide "accurate information" regarding COVID-19, while just 26% of Americans said the same for Trump. 2162
