Megan and Fadil Lee's love story started when the two were freshmen in college, and it may have ended there had Fadil not sent Megan a Facebook message 25 years later. “I was like, OK, is he single or married?” Megan recalls. After dating for a year and a half, the two married, and Fadil wanted to be a first-time father. Megan was on board, despite being 45 years old and already having two adult kids. “Let's face it; we're all living longer, you know,” Megan says. “And I don't think that age should be an inhibitor for you if you're in good health and you're in good shape. I think that those options should be available to you.”Dr. Paul Magarelli, who specializes in fertility for older women, agrees. “Now that we're living to 80, 90 and 100, the idea of a baby at 50 really is not that crazy,” he says. Dr. Magarelli is helping the couple conceive through IVF. “The uterus doesn't age; it’s a muscle. So, they've done successful IVF and women with donor egg up to age 74 and still got healthy babies,” Dr. Magarelli says. Megan is planning to use her own eggs, but the reality is most older women use frozen or donor eggs. “Once you reach the age of 44 and above the number of eggs that are available to make a baby are preciously few, so most families at some point will use donor eggs,” Dr. Magarelli says. There are significant risks for both mother and baby, including gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, as well as pregnancy loss. Babies also have a higher risk of chromosome abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. Megan and Fadil say they are aware of the risks and are being proactive. “We are going to do genetic testing on the embryos because of our age,” Megan says. “So, we want to make sure that all the chromosomes are supposed to be there are there in full and complete.” These come along with a hefty price tag. Standard IVF treatments can cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000. Paying out of pocket for the procedure, the couple hopes everything goes right on their first try.“We both have a very strong faith, and so if stuff doesn't work out, then we're going to look at that as a sign from God that we're just not supposed to be parents at this stage in our life,” she says. 2232

PARADISE, Calif. – The struggle to emerge from rubble and ash now grips the town of Paradise, California. “We’ve all been through the same thing,” said Mayor Jody Jones. “So much trauma. Nobody else really knows what we’ve been through.” Last year, the Camp Fire, as it is called, destroyed 19,000 homes and killed more than 80 people killed. The recovery has been slow. Though the town issued 500 building permits after the fire, so far, only nine homes have been rebuilt. However, 3,000 people are back, along with nearly 200 small businesses that reopened, like Nic’s Restaurant. “The biggest challenge is timing,” said restaurant owner Nicky Jones, “because there’s so many people wanting to rebuild.” The challenges are staggering. Flames scorched hundreds of thousands of trees that now need to be removed because they’re in danger of falling. The fire also left behind something more ominous: contaminated soil. “For the burnt properties, more than half of them are contaminated,” Mayor Jones said. Evacuation routes there also remain woefully inadequate, potentially trapping people again, should another wildfire break out -- much like they are currently raging in other parts of California. “I think, right now, looking at the fires in California and people got to start asking those tough questions - at what point do I decide I don't want to move back out there?” said Robert Allen, an adjunct professor specializing in risk management at Tulane University. When COVID-19 became a public health emergency this past spring, it caused widespread problems for supply chains that moved food from manufacturers to your local grocery store.Six months after the pandemic started, consumers are still finding several popular food items hard to find.The company that produces "Peeps" (Just Born in Pennsylvania) recently announced that it will not have Halloween or Christmas versions of the popular marshmallow treat this year. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently.The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash.
