PARADISE HILLS (KGTV) -- A Paradise Hills nursing home sees a surge in COVID-19 cases, worrying the families of those who live in the facility.According to the administrator of Reo Vista Healthcare Center, 71 residents and 28 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. One resident passed away. State data from Monday shows Reo Vista Healthcare Center with the highest one-day positive patient total in the county.“Eight residents are currently hospitalized in stable condition. The remaining residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are isolated at the facility with mild symptoms,” said Curtis White, Reo Vista Healthcare’s administrator.White added that four employees have recovered and the remaining who have tested positive are also self-isolating with mild symptoms.Cesar Noriega’s 90-year-old mother is currently staying at Reo Vista. She has also tested positive for the virus. “I was terrified,” he told Team 10.“It’s a staggering number by any measure,” said Mike Dark, an attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform. He is not affiliated with Reo Vista Healthcare.Dark said California rules require nursing homes to come up with testing plans to cover all residents and health care workers. “The problem has been an execution of those plans. It’s been spotty at best,” Dark said.Another concern at nursing homes is the staff, which typically consists of certified nursing assistants. He said many often work at multiple places due to low pay.“When the virus comes into a facility and they’re exposed to it, they can carry it unwillingly into another facility that they’re working at,” Dark said.Noriega said he likes Reo Vista, but he needs to think of his mother’s health. “What happened with the outbreak there, it’s tragic. It’s unfortunate, so I need to get my mom out. I can’t leave my mom there,” Noriega said.The facility currently holds about 135 residents and 150 staff members, according to White. He said a baseline COVID-19 test was conducted on May 28th and a second round of testing occurred between June 16 and June 18. Test results came back on June 27.“This incident underscores the service and sacrifices made by our dedicated team every day. We’re grateful for their continued effort. PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego says one area hospital is nearing capacity in its morgue and may be requesting refrigerated trucks. The morgue at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office is also reportedly near capacity.Gallego said Friday morning that officials are looking at an option to prevent problems at the Phoenix-area Abrazo Health Hospital."It's specific just to one area…this is not a statewide problem," Gallego said. "Maricopa County... is looking at everything they can do."Abrazo Health later issued a statement saying that they have "adequate" morgue space, but are taking "proactive" steps to ensure they have overflow morgue space if needed.Gallego added that "we are losing too many Arizonans." She also urged Arizona Gov. (AP) — Automated alerts from the fledgling West Coast earthquake early warning system are ready to be used broadly by businesses, utilities, schools and other entities but not for mass public notification, officials said Wednesday."We're making a large change from a production prototype in pilot mode to an open-for-business operational mode," Doug Given, earthquake early warning coordinator for the U.S. Geological Survey, told a press conference at the California Institute of Technology.The system being built for California, Oregon and Washington detects that an earthquake is occurring, quickly analyzes the data and sends out alerts that may give warnings of several seconds to a minute before strong shaking arrives at locations away from the epicenter.RELATED: The Great ShakeOut to shake up SoCal ThursdayThat can be enough time to automatically slow trains, stop industrial processes, start backup generators, pause a surgery or send students scrambling for protection under desks and table.Pilot programs involving select users have been underway for several years."The system is not yet finished, it's not complete, there is a lot of work to be done, however there is a lot of capability in the system as it exists today to the point it can definitely be used," Given said.The sensor network is about 50 percent complete and funding has been secured to complete it in California in the next two years and get two-thirds of the way built out in the Pacific Northwest, he said.Another key development occurred Sept. 28 when a new generation of ShakeAlert software was deployed.RELATED: State's next big earthquake could be in SoCalGiven said among its important improvements is reduction of false and missed alerts. "Unfortunately the technology that is built into your phone to send you notifications was not designed with earthquake early warning in mind."Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who has championed funding of the system, said it will also be important to make sure people know what the alerts mean, what to do when they get them, what not to do and to understand there may be false alarms."The education component is going to be very, very important, but this is a wonderful milestone," he said. OWENTON, Ky. -- A McDonald's worker who handled food while infected with hepatitis A might have spread the illness to customers, according to a news release from the Three Rivers District Health Department in Kentucky. The announcement arrived less than a week after a similar one from Clermont County, where a Taco Bell worker was diagnosed with the virus."While it is relatively uncommon for restaurant patrons to become infected with hepatitis A due to an infected food handler, anyone who consumed food or drink at the Owenton McDonald's (between Aug. 16-27) is advised to get a hepatitis A vaccination," district health officials wrote in a news release.The McDonald's in question is located at 506 South Main Street in Owenton, Kentucky.Officials added the McDonald's management was cooperating with their investigation, employees had been told to receive a vaccination and the entire staff reviewed standard hygiene practices to prevent transmission.Kentucky is in the midst of a statewide outbreak of hepatitis A, a liver infection that can remain asymptomatic for many weeks before causing fatigue, nausea, joint paint and low-grade fevers. People with existing health problems, especially older adults, can sometimes experience sudden liver shutdowns, according to Mayo Clinic. Hepatitis A is normally transmitted through small particles of feces that remain on an infected person's hands after using the restroom. With having to care for three children, they decided it was time to make some extra cash, so they posted their car for rent on Turo. "It's really just posting pictures of your car, and they set you up with a photographer if you want professional pictures done of your car," explains Christie.Depending on how new and nice your vehicle is, Christie says Turo allows you to price your car accordingly.
