LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Dencil Gold, a father of three from Las Vegas, has never been into sports, let alone the game of hockey.But this year, all that changed.“It’s like the perfect storm in a perfect community,” Gold said, “and everybody loves it.”He’s describing the hockey fever surrounding the Las Vegas Golden Knights.From the oversized Knights jersey draped over the Statue of Liberty replica outside the ‘New York, New York’ hotel and casino, to the well wishes on the marquees, to the giant-sized chocolate sculpture of star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, hockey is the talk of the town.The Las Vegas Golden Knights are an NHL expansion team; it’s in its inaugural year, and few expected them to do well. Vegas Sports Book locations had their odds at clinching the Stanley Cup at 500-to-1.That was months ago. Now, they’re just one round away from the finals.“This is really special,” Gold said as he looks out over a packed house on a recent Thursday morning to watch the team practice.But it’s not even about their enormous and almost unrivaled success as a first year team.The Knights' very first home game ever took place just nine days after, and just down the street, from one of the most horrific mass shootings the country has ever seen. The city was in mourning. What this team represents is hope in the face of evil.“We were hurting as a community, and [these team members] were hurting as people,” Gold said. “All of a sudden none of that mattered. We were all in this together.”He can point to the exact moment he became a fan of the Golden Knights. It was during the opening ceremony at that first game, when emotions were still raw. The Knights put together a tribute to the 58 people who lost their lives, and the players, often considered heroes in their own right, escorted the “everyday heroes” of that fateful night, doctors, nurses, and first responders, out onto the ice.“It was a very moving and touching moment,” Gold said. “It was just like ‘Oh my God, this is really special.’”Golden Knights’ defenseman Deryk Engelland then skated to the center of the rink and took the microphone.“To the families and friends of the victims,” Engelland said, “know that we’ll do everything we can to help you and our city heal.”The crowd erupted into cheers before his closing line.“We are Vegas strong,” said Engelland.“The city was just trying to find a way to come together,” said mom of two Melanie Samaniego. “I think it brought something positive into the city in a time of mourning when people were really feeling low and sad and kind of lost.”Samaniego was also watching the Knights practice on this weekday morning, and admitted that, as Gold has done, she too has taken her kids out of school to be at these practices.“This doesn’t happen every day,” she said,  smiling. “I’ve never seen this kind of reaction to any team brought into this city.”Her daughter has even started playing hockey, mimicking the moves of the standout goalie.In the locker room after practice, Fleury, asked whether he thinks their success is helping people heal after an unthinkable tragedy, he demurred but said that if their games can help take people’s minds off something horrible even for “a few nights a week” and cheer for their home team, then “we did a little bit of good for the community.”Samaniego, beaming from ear to ear, summed it up with one sentence.“I don’t think anything more positive could have come out of this.”Chris Welch is a national correspondent for The E.W. LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. Eleni Kounalakis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the state Capitol, and the California Highway Patrol is holding a bell tribute ceremony in his honor on Monday.Carapia, who knew Licon for six years, said the sergeant was well-liked and known for his work ethic and a distinct and quirky high-pitched laugh."He had a great sense of humor," Carapia said. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... Just an all-around great human being."He said Licon loved his job and the fact that his office was on a motorcycle."This is a tough one," he said. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A teenager died Sunday after being shot at a mall in Lexington, Kentucky. The Fayette County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Kenneth Wayne Bottoms Jr., of Lexington. Bottoms was transported UK Medical Center at about 4 p.m where he was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.Two other victims were also injured in the shooting, which police say happened in front of a Bath and Body Works at Fayette Mall. Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said at least one of the victims and a suspect knew each other. They may have had an interaction prior to the shooting.Officers are currently interviewing witnesses. No suspects are in custody at this point.Scripps station WLEX interviewed one Lexington shopper who was inside Bath and Body Works. She says she witnessed an argument outside of the shop that escalated when someone pulled out a gun."Held it up at face level... and he shot four shots off," said the shopper.The shopper, who wished to remain anonymous, says she was escorted with others toward the back of the store."We stayed in the bathroom until police got us out of the service door to Bath and Body Works, and they walked us around all of the blood to take us outside," said the shopper.Mark Thomas was inside his shop, Bourbon Creek, when he saw a group of people run by with sheer panic on their faces. His store was packed at the time, so the retired Lexington police detective quickly jumped into action."We had several customers that were wanting to leave, and we have a back door into the parking lot, so we were able to help evacuate people through the store. Law enforcement officials from New York to Florida are examining clues to find the person or persons who sent 10 packages containing what appear to be explosive materials to prominent Democrats, critics of President Donald Trump, and to CNN's New York offices as authorities classify the incidents as domestic terrorism.Three new packages were detected Thursday -- two intended for former Vice President Joe Biden and one for actor-director Robert DeNiro -- each bearing the same markings as the seven packages detected earlier this week. And authorities now believe several of the packages went through the Opa-locka, Florida, processing and distribution center, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.The devices mark one of the most serious attempts to stoke fear and terror in the US in a period that has already seen a number of violent political attacks. The apparent bombs, while rudimentary in design, according to law enforcement officials, targeted two former US presidents, a former vice president and potential presidential contender, and numerous outspoken critics of the Trump administration.Investigators are reviewing security footage from the CNN building and examining the packages themselves for potential clues, according to current and former law enforcement officials."Everything is a clue," a law enforcement official said.As authorities examine clues, they are also finding more questions to answer.One key question authorities are puzzling over is why none of the apparent bombs detonated, a second law enforcement source said, raising questions about the skill and motive of the bombmaker.This person said either the bombmaker was good enough to ensure none would go off and never intended them to explode or it was poorly constructed. Authorities consider the bombs to be potentially destructive because of the presence of what is believed to be pyrotechnic powder. Though it appears they were handled through the postal system -- and thus jostled and moved -- without triggering any explosion.William Sweeney, FBI special agent in charge of the New York field office, said Thursday afternoon that the powder discovered with the package sent to CNN did not pose a biological threat but another official said it was undergoing testing.The FBI's counterterrorism team is leading the investigation and has classified it as a domestic terror matter, the law enforcement official said. That classification is based on the absence of other information and could change.The Secret Service, US Postal Inspector Service, and ATF are also working on the investigation with various state and federal offices.
