Officials in North Carolina now say that seven people have been killed in flash floods prompted by Tropical Storm Eta.The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte. There, at a local campground, three bodies were recovered and another 31 people were rescued. As of Thursday afternoon, an adult and a child were still missing from the campsite.Elsewhere in Alexander County, another person died when floodwaters caused a bridge to collapse. It was one of four bridges in the country that were swept away by floods, and one of the collapses was captured live by a local TV news channel.The Observer reports that two other deaths were recorded in Iredell County when floodwaters caused a pickup truck to hydroplane and collided with an oncoming car.The New York Times reports that the seventh fatality occurred in Wake County — near Raleigh — where witnesses say a child who had been playing near a creek drowned in a flash flood.According to The Weather Channel, the Charlotte area received seven inches of rain on Thursday, causing creeks and rivers to overflow quickly. Five counties in North Carolina declared states of emergency.The National Hurricane Center reports that Eta, now a post-tropical cyclone, is currently located just offshore of the Carolinas. (KGTV) - Activists are demanding the Oceanside Unified School District give all its teachers cultural sensitivity training after middle school students turned in a deportation themed board game for a class assignment.The game was called ‘Deportation Time’ and featured offensive themes about immigration - players had to blow up the border wall in the game to cross over to the U.S.“The board game issue is disappointing,” said activist Karen Plascencia, “it’s disappointing, but it’s not surprising.” Plascencia is with the Human Right Council of Oceanside.The HRCO and MEChA de MiraCosta are asking the district for cultural sensitivity training sessions, forums for immigrant families, and to form a committee on ethnic studies.RELATED: Oceanside middle school students create 'border crossing' game called 'Deportation Time'“We firmly believe if that teacher had gone to cultural sensitivity training that involves undocumented youth, she wouldn’t have approved of such a cruel and humiliating board game so easily” said Plascencia, “she would have understood that there are students within OUSD that are suffering deportation of their family the family separation that this is affecting students now as we speak.”OUSD Superintendent Dr. Julie Vitale wrote a statement on the board game saying: 1329

Oceanside’s Flying Pig restaurant had a wait for tables last Friday.On the surface, that sounds like a dream scenario.But owner Roddy Browning says sales just didn't match the demand.“Our capacity is just cut so much, there's just no room for that heavyweight labor when you don't have the capacity,” he said.It's because of social distancing restrictions.Browning recently reopened The Flying Pig and his Vista restaurant - Town Hall Public House - with seating cut in about half.He's working his way back after having to layoff much of his staff when Coronavirus restrictions first took effect. In all Browning had about 60 employees at his two restaurants before COVID.Now, he's hired about 25.He says challenges go beyond the finances.Browning says he and other restaurant owners are having trouble filling jobs in the back of the house.And there have been isolated incidents where people have refused requests to wear masks - taking their money elsewhere.Browning says he wants people to understand why masks are required.As for surviving, Browning says he'll just have to make it work. 1099

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A dramatic arrest of a man following a police pursuit that started in San Juan Capistrano and ended in Oceanside.The California Highway Patrol said it all started around 11 p.m. Sunday night when officers attempted to pull over a silver car that was weaving and traveling with no lights on Interstate 5. The driver never stopped, leading officers on a pursuit for about 20 minutes.When the chase entered San Diego County, CHP officers used a spike strip to slow down the car near Camp Pendleton, with the Carlsbad Police Department's help.The car eventually pulled into the center divider at Oceanside Blvd., but the driver refused to come out. Officers used munitions to break the back window and had a K-9 drag the man out.The driver was resisting arrest and had to be wrestled onto a gurney and taken to the hospital.No officers were injured. All southbound and northbound lanes of the I-5 were closed for about half an hour. 964

(KGTV) - A major turning point for the town of Oceanside was the creation of Camp Pendleton."It was just a village, Oceanside was just a village and all of a sudden you have all these workers coming into Oceanside for a place to sleep, a place to eat," said Faye Jonason, History and Museum Director at Camp Pendleton since 1996.According to the Oceanside Historical Society, the town's population more than doubled in five years. Restaurants, schools, and hotels were bursting at the seams. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the U.S. Navy to purchase the 132,000 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita y las Flores Mexican land grant. The base was only supposed to be temporary, but the process of turning the quiet Rancho into the world's largest Marine Corps Base had begun. "I think they found it was such good training area, they weren't about to let go," said Jonason.
