SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's new dive coaster has shed its "Mako" moniker and will now nod to another of the park's coolest animals.SeaWorld announced Tuesday its dive coaster will be called "Emperor," a nod to Emperor penguins. The name is "a tribute to the Emperor penguins’ journey from chilly, frosted cliffs to their deep dive into the depths of the ocean," the park says.The ride will still be modeled after SeaWorld's other "Mako" coasters, taking riders more than 150 feet high, before sending them into a 143-foot face-down drop and through loops and turns at up to 60 miles per hour. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University released its plan Monday relating to holiday travel during the pandemic. It comes as students are getting ready to travel home for the holidays in a few weeks.The policies apply to students living on campus and those with in-person classes.Roughly 2,100 students live on-campus, and about 2,200 students are enrolled in an in-person class or participating in on-campus research, according to SDSU. There is a crossover between the groups.Students living on campus can choose to stay on campus over Thanksgiving. Meal plans and other student services will be available during the break.Students who choose to go home and see family have an option. The plan says they “may choose to remain at home for the rest of the fall semester and complete the last two weeks of the term remotely.”Those that travel and return to on-campus housing will be tested for COVID-19 immediately upon returning and then tested again, five to seven days later.Those taking in-person classes will be asked to test weekly upon returning; they are currently required to test every 14-days. Those taking in-person classes are being encouraged to avoid holiday travel.The notice to students goes on to say:"Each of us must continue to be very thoughtful and careful, even if the effects of COVID-19 seem invisible or have not touched some of us personally. Several religious and spiritual observations are before us in the months ahead, and it is disappointing that we will not be able to celebrate in person many of our traditions with our loved ones in ways we have in the past. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University's men's basketball team has returned to the top ten in the national polls for the first time in five years, reaching number seven in the AP and Coach's Polls released Monday. The Aztecs are 15-0 to start the season, making them one of just two undefeated teams remaining in Division One. The other team is Auburn. Head Coach Brian Dutcher says the team is handling the success well, refusing to be distracted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School superintendents from South Bay, Cajon Valley, Escondido and Chula Vista Elementary came together for a virtual roundtable Wednesday. The meeting comes days after Governor Gavin Newsom released a mandate saying students can only return to campus when the county has been off the state’s watchlist for two weeks.The discussion focused on tackling challenges for the upcoming school year. All four districts say one of the main issues is a lack of funding.“I listened to the governor speaking about how money has come to school districts,” said Dr. Katie McNamara, superintendent of South Bay Union School District. “It’s good to note that none of that money has arrived yet.”She says they’ve had to dip into the district’s general funds to pay for things like PPE and improving distance learning models.Cajon Valley reopened in-person summer programs last week and say they will be staying open.The County Office of Education says the governor’s order does not apply to camps or day cares.“We have almost 5,000 students on campus, today, right now in a version of summer school that we're calling child care.”The Chula Vista Elementary Union superintendent, Dr. Francisco Escobdedo says they’re paying close attention to testing.“In order for us to feel safe our contagion levels have to lower, the curve has to plateau.”Escobedo adds they’re working on providing more internet hot spots for families who need it. 1446

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Strong Santa Ana winds moved through San Diego County Tuesday, toppling a big rig as it traveled on Interstate 8 near Alpine. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Willows Road, blocking the left lane for about an hour and a half, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt reported. Another semi overturned on Interstate 15 in Fontana. San Diegan Bashar Shebo was driving through the area on his way to Las Vegas.
