ALPINE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Some residents in Alpine are ramping up their yard work after Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for the Calfornia's most wildfire-prone areas. Alpine residents have a name for yard work. "It's a necessary evil. We have to clear it out," Jonathan Hesse said. 10News met Hesse as he and his son Ben were raking brush and chainsawing a dead tree on their front yard. "The drought, they [the trees] couldn't handle it anymore. So they died," Hesse said, pointing at the row of what used to be lush trees. He said the time had come to chop them down because he was sure they would ignite his entire 2.5-acre property. In the last two decades, the Hesse's have had three close calls. Their last evacuation was the 2018 West Fire. Luckily, they survived, as did their home. But they are not taking chances. "This year, there's a lot of weeds, and that's going to be tough to keep up with," Hesse said. Luckily, he has a helpful son and a sturdy tractor to help with the clean-up process. They will eventually put their large pile of dead logs and branches through a wood chipper to make mulch. Thanks to the work they did today, the flammability of their home is much lower than it was yesterday. "That's one thing we want to do. We want to make sure it doesn't get out of control," Hesse said. This week, CalFire-San Diego posted a video to remind residents to clear up brush and create defensible space. For more information, click here. 1487

After Andy Cohen recovered from the coronavirus, he wanted to help others recover. He attempted to do what others who have had the coronavirus have been asked to do and give plasma. It turns out he was rejected.Cohen is prohibited from giving plasma because he is gay. He was told that gay men are unable to give blood due to concerns over HIV infection, despite him being HIV negative."They said, 'You can't do it,'" Cohen said on Tuesday’s ABC "The View." "I was hurt. I just thought well this is crazy, technology has come so far.“They're worried about HIV in blood," he added. "But I'm HIV negative. And you can find that out, and then you can test my blood a couple of times before putting it into a system."The FDA recently slightly relaxed its ban on gay men giving blood or plasma, stipulating that men who have had sex with other men are eligible to donate after three months of abstinence. The FDA says that it is possible that convalescent plasma contains antibodies to the coronavirus and might be effective against the infection. Plasma can be collected from recovered individuals only if they are eligible to donate blood. 1142

Amazon has purchased the naming rights to a Seattle arena that will soon house an NHL franchise. But unlike most naming rights deals, Amazon will not be putting its name on the building.Instead, the company says the arena will be named "Climate Pledge Arena" — a name inspired by Amazon's recent billion pledge to fight climate change. The building, formerly known as Seattle Center Coliseum and KeyArena (among other names), initially opened in 1962 and was the longtime home of the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics until the team left for Oklahoma City in 2008. The building has also served as the home for the WNBA's Seattle Storm. In December 2017, Seattle's City Council approved a plan to renovate the arena, hoping to attract new NBA and NHL franchises to the city. Months later, the NHL announced it had granted Seattle an expansion franchise that would start play in the 2021-22 season. It's common practice for sports teams and municipalities to sell naming rights to local stadiums to companies for advertising purposes. But Amazon won't be using the Seattle arena for advertising.Instead, the name "Climate Pledge" will highlight the arena's innovative amenities designed to combat climate change. Those amenities include:Zero Carbon certification by the International Living Future InstituteAll-electric operations — from arena lighting to Zamboni engines — powered by on-site solar panels and off-site renewable energyZero-waste operations at all events, including compostable containers for foodAn ice system using reclaimed rainwater, a first among NHL playing surfacesA mostly locally-sourced food program focused on sustainabilityFree public transit tickets with the purchase of WNBA and NHL ticketsAmazon announced its "Climate Pledge" earlier this year, which includes a commitment to provide billion in funding to combat climate change and sets a goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.The NHL's new Seattle franchise does not yet have a team name. The name is currently expected to be unveiled in the fall. 2044

Across the West Coast, entire towns are being leveled by historic wildfires, and one northern California county is facing this horror for the second time in two years.Berry Creek’s hilly terrain is still smoldering, as homeowners anxiously wait to be let back into the area, although many already know they don’t have homes to come back to.“When they see the smoke or hear about a fire, their PTSD, whether you’re civilian or former military, it kicks in,” said resident Michael Zylstra, who evacuated from his home.Steve Kaufmann, the public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, compared the fires to a freight train.A freight train of fire, swallowing everything in its path.“When we have a fire like this, it makes for number one, explosive, but we are seeing erratic fire behavior we’ve never seen in our career,” Kaufmann said.Fires so erratic it’s capable of leaving a town unrecognizable.Michael Zylstra says his aunt and uncle won’t have a home to come back to. Miles of Berry Creek homes have been reduced to rubble.“It’s a scenario where the vegetation is completely bone dry,” he described. The town is a casualty of the North Complex Fire. Fueled by years of drought and extreme winds, it’s burned over 260,000 acres in northern California.“It took a huge toll on the community,” Kaufmann recalled. “It hit because it moved so fast, and we just didn’t have the resources to put in there to defend every structure involved.”With resources spread across 28 major fires, Kaufmann says it’s a challenge the state has had to adapt to.“We’re always prepared for the worst-case scenario,” he said. “This is probably definitely one of the worst cases we’ve seen in years.”Zylstra evacuated his home six days ago in the nearby town of Cherokee. As he waits for news, he helps fellow veterans cope with the trauma.“It’s been stressful,” he said. “They’re anxious, they get nervous, they don’t know what to do, they can’t sleep.”In large part because the community went through this nearly two years ago when the Camp Fire ripped through paradise killing 85 people and destroying nearly 19,000 structures.“It’s very painful memories for a lot of them,” Zylstra said. It’s painful for many to rebuild.“[In] a lot of people’s eyes, it will never be what it was; it will never ever be what it was in 20-30 years, what it used to be,” he said. And now, another town must also try and navigate life forever changed by fire.“We just need to all work together for that one common goal, to take care of each other,” Zylstra said. 2573
