President Donald Trump is in the middle of the most intense phase of COVID-19, but it's not stopping him from creating controversy. From social media posts deemed so misleading that they were deleted, to a staged re-entry to the White House, to overly-positive assessments of the deadly disease, the president has spent Monday and Tuesday making waves.A biographical analyst attributed some of the president's brashness to a way of thinking in which he's been steeped from a young age.Tuesday afternoon began with Dr. Sean Conley, President Trump's personal physician, issuing a memorandum that said, in part, "He reports no symptoms," and "He continues to do extremely well."The memo came out after the president's medical team met with him on Monday morning. Also on Monday morning, Mr. Trump was active on social media. As is typical when he's not tasked with fighting a deadly disease in his bloodstream, the president's posts sparked strong reactions.Specifically, the social media outlets on which he posted responded with rebuke.Facebook deleted a post that Trump made, because it contained false information about COVID-19 and flu. Meanwhile, Twitter chose to allow the same post from him, made in a tweet, obviously. However, Twitter added a disclaimer that what the president had written had "violated Twitter Rules about spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19."The president's tweet said that "Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu." It went on to say, "we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!"However, Trump's own Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that, over the last decade, an average of 36,500 Americans have died from the flu. That's in contrast to more than 210,400 who've lost their lives to COVID.The social media posts followed Pres. Trump's staged return home on Monday night. That's when he left Walter Reed Military Medical Center in suburban Washington, D.C. for his home at the White House. Ordinarily, the president takes an elevator from the ground floor to the balcony level, one floor above. However, on Monday night, he climbed the exterior flight of stairs, from the White House Lawn, and removed his mask. That gesture, along with the president's visible straining for air following his ascent up the steps, sparked widespread reaction by social media users, and by medical experts alike.Dr. Jonathan Reiner, the George Washington University Hospital cardiologist who saved former Vice President Dick Cheney's life, was aghast at the sight of the world's most-watched COVID patient removing his mask in the midst of his affliction, while around other people."It's unexplainable," Dr. Reiner told CNN in an interview, "that the President of the United States, who's actively shedding virus with millions of particles, would walk into that building, with the enormous number of staff, unmasked."After his arrival at the White House, President Trump recorded a video message about COVID."Don't let it dominate you," Trump said, looking into the camera. "Don't be afraid of it."He made no mention of his fellow Americans who have died, in his message that was characteristically upbeat. Some people who've chronicled Donald Trump's life, including his years prior to becoming president, say that his approach to everything is centered around the way of thinking he learned at Marble Collegiate Church, in Midtown Manhattan. It had been home to world renowned pastor, Rev. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. The author of "The Power of Positive Thinking" preached that message so strongly that it led to the Trump family becoming devoted members of Marble Collegiate, from the time of Donald Trump's early childhood.Gwenda Blair, a biographical author who wrote the book "The Trumps," said that a blind devotion to the power of positive thinking has long driven Donald Trump, for better, and possibly worse."He has used that to full advantage," Blair said, in a Zoom interview with PIX11 News. "That whole emphasis on success does not allow for anything like insight," she continued, "into assessing your effect on other people, the impact, or anything you might call failure.""Instead, with Donald Trump," she said, "it's led to absolute faith that whatever he's done is right, and if something goes wrong, it's somebody else's fault."That assessment is related to a comment that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made late on Monday afternoon -- that the president doesn't seem to realize that, as a COVID patient, he's got every advantage, more so than anyone else who's had the disease."[When] the average person gets COVID," the governor said in a news conference, "they don’t get flown by helicopter to Walter Reed Hospital, and have a team of 20 doctors, [and] millions of dollars of medical talent."Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, a statement from the office of First Lady Melania Trump said that all White House staff, including anyone coming into contact with the president and first lady, were wearing PPE. Trying to avoid the grocery store these days?If you order through Instacart, you can have your groceries delivered right to your door from dozens of different supermarkets. However, some customers claim the people grabbing those groceries for you may be helping themselves as well.Terri Angel loves the convenience of Instacart grocery delivery from stores,, but she is getting concerned with mysterious charges that keep showing up on her bill."The other day, after I went back and reviewed the receipt, there was a pack of cigarettes on it," she said.Someone had billed her an extra ."It was a very expensive pack of cigarettes, a brand I haven't heard of, purchased and put on our list," she said. "So it was on our receipt and we did pay for it."Another day, she was billed for Red Bull energy drink."Just recently, on the 8th, a Red Bull was added at the end of the shopping cart," she said. "I guess they were thirsty and needed energy and decided to add on a Red Bull."She wonders how many others she's missed.Angel is executive director of a collection of group homes for the disabled, and orders groceries for them several times a week. It's those disabled clients, she says, who are being ripped off.Complaints increase as orders surgeA recent report in USA Today claims a growing number of customers accuse Instacart shoppers of stealing their groceries.Instacart's Facebook page has a number of complaints of similar mystery charges. It was pretty much inevitable that during a pandemic, with so many shoppers now ordering online and so many more people having to be hired to fulfill those orders, that we would see an increase in complaints.Instacart says orders have surged 300% this year, and it has hired tens of thousands of new shoppers to handle the load.It says each are thoroughly checked out before being hired, but says occasional errors and problems do happen. But It notes that "in these rare instances ... customers should contact Instacart care to have their order refunded."Terri Angel has one other piece of advice: Go over your receipt every time."Absolutely," she said. "Check your bill. Make sure you are checking every item on that receipt and that you received it."Instacart is an independent company, and is not owned by your local grocery store.Instacart, meantime, told us customers should reach out with any order or delivery problems (full statement below), so you don't waste your money.Full Instacart Statement"We’re seeing the highest customer demand in Instacart history and have more active shoppers on our platform today than ever before picking and delivering groceries for millions of consumers. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Millions of drivers received refunds on their car insurance after the pandemic forced a national shutdown. But the I-Team found out at least one major insurance carrier is asking to raise rates for drivers across Florida.Pinellas County resident Robert Stickler and his wife started working from home after the pandemic shut down Florida in March. “My family hasn't been driving, the cars have been sitting," Stickler said.Their insurance carrier Geico and many other large auto insurers in the nation refunded drivers. The Sticklers were refunded 15 to 20 percent of premium costs after the pandemic delivered a drastic dip in accidents and claims. That credit was reflected on the Stickler family bill.Robert Stickler welcomed the refund but said they suffered sticker shock when Geico socked them with a 0 rate hike to their 6-month policy in June. The increase was approved by the state. “It was going to be over 4 a month for 3 older vehicles,” said Stickler. In a letter from Geico:"There are many factors that affect your insurance premium such as age, driving history, location and the increasing cost of vehicle repairs." But this driver says that explanation does not add up. “There had been no changes what-so-ever,” said Stickler. We reached out to Geico and have yet to hear back. The I-Team checked state records and found Geico petitioned the Florida Office of Insurance regulation between March and August for a separate rate hike of nearly 7 percent after the pandemic hit.Doug Heller is with the Consumer Federation of America, a watchdog group that called on Geico this past May to give back some of its profits the CFA claims the company raked in during the pandemic as drivers stayed off the road. “We are paying premiums as if the pandemic never happened,” said Heller. The I-Team reviewed second-quarter profit earnings for some of the nation’s largest insurance companies. We looked at overall profits which include their auto insurance and found Allstate, Progressive and Geico business shot up by hundreds of millions of dollars for the second quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of 2019.Geico's parent company reported to investors its 2020 overall insurance profits were, ”...largely attributable to unusually high earnings from Geico due to lower claims frequencies. These results are likely to be temporary…"Former Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Lisa Miller says there’s a state law that regulates how much insurance can profit. “We have very strict set of factors of what these insurance companies can profit," Miller said. No one is alleging that Geico or any other insurance company made an excessive profit. However, Miller says if state regulators find that any auto carrier made an excessive profit, customers could be refunded under a Florida law meant to protect consumers. The I-Team requested an interview with Florida's Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier. His spokesperson declined our request but said in a statement."OIR thoroughly reviews all filed auto insurance rates filings to ensure they comply with all applicable laws and are not excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory. "In its latest earnings report. Allstate credited its auto policy profits to "....Higher premiums earned and lower loss costs from reduced miles driven.”We asked the company if it planned to refund more money to customers, but have yet to hear back. Progressive told us it filed in June to reduce premiums in 35 states including Florida.Geico’s rate hike request is still pending. We plan to keep following that and let you know how it could affect your bills This story originally reported by Jackie Callaway on abcactionnews.com. 3739
