The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is reviewing about 0,000 it received from foundations controlled by accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, MIT's president said. The school also will donate that amount to a charity benefiting Epstein's victims or other sexual abuse victims, President L. Rafael Reif said in an email. The review will focus on the facts around the donations, made over 20 years, and how the school handles contributions and can improve that process, Reif said.Epstein was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking involving underage girls when he killed himself by hanging in a New York jail cell this month."I offer a profound and humble apology" to the victims on behalf of the administration, Reif said. "With hindsight, we recognize with shame and distress that we allowed MIT to contribute to the elevation of his reputation, which in turn served to distract from his horrifying acts. No apology can undo that."The donations went to the MIT Media Lab or Seth Lloyd, a professor of mechanical engineering, according to Reif's email. 1078

The Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden campaigns are both canceling their planned rallies in Cleveland Tuesday evening.Campaign communications director Mike Casca released this statement: Out of concern for public health and safety, we are canceling tonight’s rally in Cleveland. Sanders would like to express his regret to the thousands of Ohioans who had planned to attend the event tonight. Sanders was scheduled to appear at a rally at Huntington Convention Center at 7:30 p.m. Future Sanders campaign events will be evaluated on a case by case basis, Casca stated.Less than an hour after Sanders' announcement, Biden announced his rally would not go on as planned. "In accordance with guidance from public officials and out of an abundance of caution, our rally in Cleveland, Ohio tonight is canceled," the campaign said in a statement. "We will continue to consult with public health officials and public health guidance and make announcements about future events in the coming days. Vice President Biden thanks all of his supporters who wanted to be with us in Cleveland this evening. The Federal Aviation Administration is warning airlines to check their Boeing airplanes for an issue that could be a problem with the wings. The FAA says faulty parts are at risk of cracking and premature failure. Airlines will have 10 days to remove or replace the parts. The issue is not enough to cause a plane to crash, the FAA says, but it could lead to in-flight damage.“ This is something where you could have an issue and basically when the plane lands mechanics would have to work on it, the plane would come out of service, maybe you'd have cancellations, some delays but not something that could bring down an aircraft,” said Seth Kaplan, aviation analyst.More than 300 Boeing airplanes are impacted — 65 of those are in the United States. Among the planes affected, the 737 Max planes currently grounded are included. The latest issue is adding to scrutiny surrounding the 737 Max airplane.“Because of everything Boeing has gone through, because 346 having died aboard 737 in recent months … this is gonna generate a lot more attention,” Kaplan said.Boeing is still working on getting federal approval for a software update to fix the issues that investigators say played a role in the two crashes. 1219
